NYC band on the rise: Secret Weapons to play Bowery Ballroom on 08.10

Posted on:

Tune in to the sounds of Brooklyn-based pop group Secret Weapons, and you may not be able to stop yourself from dancing along – founding members Danny and Gerry sure can’t when they take to the stage. Although they’ve only released one track so far, a catchy and danceable tune entitled "Perfect World," (streaming below) the longtime friends have generated some buzz thanks to their energetic live-performances – and, as we hear, fun after parties. "Perfect World," released just three months ago, is a sparkling 4 minutes of catchy, 80s-esque synth melodies and a chorus that invites you to sing, and dance, along. The duo plans to get started on more recordings soon, but in the meantime they seem to have convinced the guys at Bowery Present, since, after headlining Rough Trade in April, they booked them for the first time at the Bowery Ballroom on August 10. That’s quite an accomplishment for any emerging band. – Patrick Wolff

We’ll Go Machete’s FIrst Album in a Long Time is a Summer Screamer

Posted on:

MMMmmmmmmmyayah, some heavy shit for ya up in this hot ass week. We here at The Deli dig showin’ off some of the genres that aren’t always as much in the limelight in Austin as others, and so we’re gotdamn pickled to be able to throw you some good ole damn ole hard rocking music today, compliments of Big Chords and Shoutyscreams act We’ll Go Machete. These guys released their first album in a while, the (we assume) jokingly titled Smile Club, on July 7, and anyone who was ever into post-hardcore shit like Fugazi, At the Drive-In etc. will eat this shit up they was Jaws from James Bond and metal was a viable foodgroup. There’s somethin’ artsier and weirder in here as well, with some really strange structures and experimentation with making guitars churn out some fucked up noises, and that the band name checks both Melvins and Slint in the info about this album says a lot about what you can expect. If you gots some pent up aggression and frustration goin’ on this summer (who are we kidding, it’s 2015, that’s everybody) and wanna churn and burn along with some fucking music from the heavy side of the city, you can’t do better than Smile Club.

NYC based DJ Jai Wolf making a name for himself

Posted on:

At just 23 years old, the New York City based DJ/producer Sajeeb Saha, better known as Jai Wolf, has been blowing up on the electronic scene. After gaining the attention of Skrillex on Twitter, Jai Wolf’s beats are no secret anymore. His remixes are what first caught the eyes and ears of other DJs and EDM fans, but his solo tracks are really where Saha sets himself apart from the pack. His newest single, "Indian Summer" (below) showcases Jai Wolf’s sound, a dancey EDM with hip hop influences and an Eastern flair. His production style is one that draws from everything around him, and "Indian Summer" brings together samples of both videogame noises and traditional Indian music. It’s a catchy, undeniably good mix, making it clear Jai Wolf is here to stay. – Sam O’Hara

Speed Over the Edge w/Spill at Michael Jordan July 21

Posted on:

Marrying former members of Placeholder and We Were Skeletons, Spill is a quartet that immediately draws your attention. With a pair of songs that you’ll gravitate toward as reflective assertive lyrics meet charged fuzzy punk grit. With the group’s debut self-titled EP on the way via Broken World Media next month, which you can now stream over at Brooklyn Vegan, the quartet transfers contemplative moments into rushes of tight indie rock that simmers instrumentally before speeding over the edge. Tonight, Spill will joined by fledging punk outfit Stippling (ex-Leaky Soups), while Virginia trio Cape Farewell helps fortify the emotive atmosphere this evening at Michael Jordan House, laying a subdued base as those feelings gradually reach the surface in raw vocal bursts. Michael Jordan, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more information.), 7pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

LA’s Dirty Dishes move to Brooklyn

Posted on:

The Deli NYC welcomes LA’s Dirty Dishes to the "lot" of land we call our "covered area." The noise rock duo settled in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, after releasing their latest full length ‘Guilty‘ on Exploding in Sound Records earlier in 2015. Active since 2010, this is a band that will certainly find a lot of supporters in their new borough’s DIY circuit, brimming with lovers of dissonance, fuzz and loud live performances. NYC seems a rather appropriate home for Dirty Dishes, since their sound is obviously following on the footsteps of Sonic Youth and other pioneers of the noise rock movement – in this regard, check out single ‘Red Roulette,’ streaming, and album opener ‘Thank You Come Again.’ This being said, the duo has always cultivated also a mellower, at times almost ambient side, which inspired songs like ‘Androginous Love Song‘ and ‘Dan Cortez‘ among others. The band just ended a US tour, we are looking forward to their first home show in NYC!

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best punk/garage songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Album Premiere: Sun Songs, by The Foresters

Posted on:

Last month, I had the pleasure of reviewing The Foresters‘ latest single, "Machines." This month, I have the greater pleasure of premiering their album, Sun Songs. The record, released through Dord Music Group, reveals a wide array of 90s rock influences – Built to Spill being the strongest comparison that comes to mind. Energetic guitar riffs run rampant through these tracks, my favorite being those on "How the World." The lone opening riff immediately caught my attention, before hitting a feedback swell and launching into raucous guitar revelry. Summer is the perfect time to open up your windows and blow out your speakers, and Sun Songs is the perfect soundtrack to help you achieve maximum aural satisfaction.

In addition to the record release this week, Mother Brother Studios will be posting a Salon Sessions video of The Foresters this Friday, July 24. For more info about the band, check out their Facebook page.

Les Zombies, Bass and Some More Cute-Ass Pop on “Unravel”

Posted on:

Goddamnit kids, there’s just somethin’ about truly earnest music that hits a chord deep within’ yer chesty bits where the soul feels like it lives, and you just can’t fake that shit no matter how hard you try. Twee and cutesy pop were like scientifically condensed versions of cute, yeah, but they really never got away from the saccharine nature that comes with something so deliberately boiled down. It might be cute, but it’s like callin’ one of those whipped cream injected whippersnapper cupcakes at Hey Cupcake! sweet: yeah we all get it, but it’s not the kinda complicated and sticking sweetness-based revelations that, say, your mom’s apricot cake baked in her small town home’s old-ass oven will ever get ya.

All that’s a very complex way to explain somethin’ pretty damn simple, which is that Les Zombies makes music that is just real goddamn cute and entirely earnest-feelin’, and that newest track "Unravel" is without question the most authentically un-heavy and adorable American love song we’ve heard in a damn long time. It’s like a soundtrack for a kind of indie romance film set in the beige-and-green-washed suburbs with a lot of 80s clothes and cars that just doesn’t exist anymore, and which would probably feel real put-on if it was made these days. Somehow this band keeps nailing this sound and sentiment in a pitch-perfect way that makes it feel like you can just go live in that kinda smaller, simpler, cuter world for a while. That ain’t a bad thing in these angry, immediate days, in my opinion. Listen below, and let’s give the past and the idea of love a bit of time to play around in our heads again as a less public, cuter, more personal thing that’s still confusing but maybe more for the simple human parts and less for the whole mess of new problems that a social media, contemporary bae-infused narrative life has put onto shit. It’s cute music that sounds great y’all, get up on it and let it get you feelin’ some good, possibly bygone way.

New Track: “Place of No Tomorrow” – Lithuania

Posted on:

Lithuania have issued a new single called “Place of No Tomorrow,” off their forthcoming LP Hardcore Friends, which is being released on August 14 via Lame-O Records. Heavy-pounding percussion and jagged guitars set the stage for the forceful yet catchy song as its vocals express an agitation with the status quo. Lithuania are set to perform this Saturday, July 25 at PhilaMOCA as part of OK Fest 2.

Good Field Releases Video for “Business” with a Bit of a Feminist Slant

Posted on:

The idea that "indie rock" actually defines a specific sound is one that wavers back and forth throughout the years from being somewhat reasonable to entirely ridiculous, and right now in this age of the Internet giving us umpteen different subgenres that have merged to some degree or another with that concept, we’re definitely in the "indie rock is a concept not a sound" end of the pendulum swing. However, there’ve been some times when indie rock meant somethin’ that was fairly specific, and one of those was when the term re-broke onto the mass consciousness in the early 2000s with bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes et al., who took a very pared down classic-rock-based-on-blues-guitar unpretentious sound and made it big. Local act Good Field channels the goddamn hell out of this sound, which ditches a lot of the contemporary contrivances (nice as those can sometimes be) of the indie sound and goes much for something that, now almost 14 years from The Strokes’ seminal This Is It, could almost be called "traditional" indie rock in a way that we mean to be quite positive. It’s all jangles on guitars and Reed/Dylan inherited vocalizing that goes great with jeans and flannels and which appeals to most any ear that isn’t exclusively turned off to summer-day guitar rock. The video here is pretty fun too, and of definite high production value, focusing on a robbery a la Funny Games, but with an interesting little 2015 twist where the girls get the upper hand and the guys just kinda shrug it off. This isn’t music that’s gonna blow minds, but it definitely will please ears and snag some hearts, especially if you have a soft spot for that stuff that’s gettin’ closer to being two decades old every day (Jesus Christ, that’s fucking odd). Watch belowgor some good old fashioned indie rock and roll.

Liphemra performing Low End Theory 7.22

Posted on:

Liphemra is headed to perform this Wednesday at the Low End Theory with Brooklyn’s future soul savant Taylor McFerrin, experimental hip-hop from Monterey Ashtre Jinkins, and LA’s ill goddess LINAFORNIA. Expect top shelf performances by residents The Gaslamp Killer, Nobody, D-Styles, Low End Theory host Nocando, and independent label Alpha Pup co-founder Daddy Kev.

Due to unforseen circumstances, Liphemra was unable to perform at the Low End Theory in May. But that hasn’t slowed them down — Liphemra worked last-minute support for Algiers‘ West Coast tour, gave a stellar performance at the second Lolipalooza, and released their zine did u cry through Lollipop and Burger Records to fan acclaim. Now, the four-piece dubbed by IMPOSE as "one of LA’s most passionate and sonically progressive phenomenons" are in full gear, with a return to the annual Echo Park Rising festival and new material in the works.

Watch the premiere of the music video for Liphemra’s recent release "Magazines" directed by Liza Mandelup and witness the grandeur live Wednesday night at the Low End Theory. – Ryan Mo
