New ¿Que Pasa? Videos for Tracks from Friendly Punk Album ‘BIG MISTAKE’

Posted on:

“We can’t wait to meet you,” says the ¿Que Pasa? description of one of Austin’s most anti-pretentious, most-likable rock music bands. That’s not rock referring to the guitar-inflected whatever that mostly associates itself with that agin’ word these days; no ¿Que Pasa? is of the punk (with some post-punk notes and venturing into psych at times) flavored school of this rock thing, and they just put out a pretty damn good modern punk album this last December that is now gettin’ the music video treatment on a couple tracks.

That sentiment of welcome found upon yon FB page is an extension of the band’s general attitude, which presents a kind-of “friendly punks” attitude that, if you’ve ever known any punks that weren’t just into the life for the infamy, is actually dead representative of a certain side of the genre. “Infeliz” is the latest track off album BIG MISTAKE to get visuals, and it shows off a band that you just really wanna go get some P. Terry’s with after and hang out drinkin’ in a park or some shit. I mean, the other track with a vid, “My Family,” literally lists singer Liz Burrito’s friends, including all members of the bands and a few others, and involves cake, board games, beer, bathtub candles and the lyrics “My friends, they are my family.”

Yet, the punk is strong with this one, and the songs are fun and often heavy and harsh, and entirely sincere. Passion + friendliness used to be the unofficial/official Austin creative way, and in the modern muddle that is an Austin where Cheer Ups has to fight to preserve a beautiful natural limestone wall being torn down for no other reason than money, we’re fully into bands that keep alive the spirit that made Austin a destination in the first place and preserve something very Austin. ¿Que Pasa? is what Austin’s about in its soul, and you should all go and be their friends now. Seems like they’d be pretty into it, if yer a non-dick and all. Music video below, full album to be found at their Bandcamp here.

Rudy De Anda releases debut EP “Ostranenie” on 7.7

Posted on:

"Visions of Plumerias," the lead single from Rudy De Anda’s debut EP Ostranenie, opens with ominous, plodding drum hits, like a storm approaching his Long Beach hometown at the end of a revelrous day… but there’s no panic to be found! De Anda’s sing-song vocals lope around to distract us, his mind on a "sea of people" and clouds covering once grey skies; there’s nothing expressly cheery about "Visions of Plumerias," most of the pos vibes offered by De Anda come with conditions, but one thinks that it ends with a charming smile, and that tension lends the song that much more spacey magic.

Ostranenie releases July 7th (Porch Party Records) so stream the rest once its available on his Bandcamp, and you can find De Anda at Pomona’s Glass House soon after on July 18th. – Brian J.K. Regan

Brooklyn sister duo Chaos Chaos plays Mercury on 07.13

Posted on:

You may have been already exposed to Brooklyn based sisters Asy and Chloe Saavedra through the adorable pop band they led in the aughts, called Smoosh – the project started when Chloe was eight years old! Now fully grown women, but still remarkably young notwithstanding their decennial experience in the band business,  the Saavandras retired the former moniker in favor of more aggressive sounding Chaos Chaos. Under the new moniker they released two six songs EPs since 2012 . This is a more mature sounding project that blends orchestral, rock and electronic elements, and also showcases impressive dual vocals reminiscent of Deli NYC all time favorites Lucius. We are digging latest single ‘Love,’ with its noisy edge and electronic texture, check out the video below. Chaos Chaos will be playing The Mercury Lounge on July 13.

Brooklyn folk rockers Mail the Horse release LP “Planet Gates” The Knit Factory tonight (6.24)

Posted on:

Back in 2012, Brooklyn folk-rock band Mail the Horse released the album “Great Kills,” which featured the slow-burning, piano-laden single “Dirty Blood.” Tonight at The Knitting Factory, the five-piece will release a new full-length, “Planet Gates.” Comprising such tracks as “Wasted Sex” and “Holy Motel Magic” (streaming below), the former a bluesy rollick reminiscent of The Rolling Stones’ “Moonlight Mile” and the latter a keys-spiked rocker, the new release appears lovingly referential and purely thrilling. Mail the Horse will play at The Knitting Factory tonight (6.24). Deli favorite Brooklyn dwellers Rivergazer and Yellowbirds’ Sam Cohen will perform, too. – Zach Weg

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Roof Doctor caught our attention with honest, introspective tracks that would eventually be found on their full-length album Mobile Freedom Home. Earlier this year, the band took a bit of a hiatus to work on its follow-up so you should discover new, unreleased tunes in the rotation tonight at Nico Nico Mansion, which will be the West Philly DIY space’s first show. They’ll be joined by psych-garage rockers Snoozer, who have reconfigured with the recent departure of Paul Hewes. The local acts will be hosting Atlanta dance-punks Muuy Biien and Florida indie-pop four-piece Poster. Based in Brooklyn, Exiles is a self-proclaimed lo-fi dream-gaze, indie surf pop quintet. Founded in late 2013 as the recording project of Moire Echo and Matt Sklar, the band expanded to a five-piece in 2014 and began working on their first recordings. “Only Summer,” the band’s aptly titled debut EP released in May of 2014, is a collection of atmospheric dream pop gems that’s a perfect soundtrack to the lazy summer days ahead. Their latest release is a single entitled ‘Kill the Lights‘ released in January of 2015 and featuring remixes of the song by both British electronic band Futurecop! and Utah-based synthpop duo New Shack. The band’s followup EP is currently in the works, and you can catch them live on June 24th at the Cake Shop, along with fellow New York bands Loosie, and Modern Merchant. – Patrick Wolf
