L.A. Jeff Release Holidaze Inn

Posted on:

LA Jeff’s newest record, the aptly titled Holidaze Inn, is the perfect remedy for those late-night, (or anytime) fuzzed-out, psych rock cravings.
My favorite track is “Sailor”, with its churning, hypnotizing chords and mesmerizing vocals. If I were to write a movie, I’d probably write a scene with a sailor having an acid trip on a boat just so I could put this in the soundtrack.

The band are currently preparing to hit the road for a 10-day, cross-country tour. For more info about the LA Jeff crew (including tour updates), click here.

Congratulations to Groove Circus, Our New Artist of the Month

Posted on:

Congratulations to Goove Circus, our newest Artist of the Month! The band has been kicking around Nashville since 2012, billing themselves as "rock/funk" which doesn’t neccessarily do justice to the sophistication of their sound, which is carried on languid reggae rhythms and jazz-inspired noodling, and, before a listener is completely overwhelmed by mental images of white men in dreadlocks, a perfectly executed turn into aggressive rock and roll. We particular fans the flow of "Knot Ain’t Pretty," embedded below. Their debut album, "Duane’s Basement," sets an overarching mood perfect for mischief sweltering summer nights, which makes RIGHT NOW the perfect time to check out this band. -Terra James-Jura

NYC artist on the rise: Domino Kirke (w/ Luke Temple) plays Baby’s All Right tonight (06.01)

Posted on:

After releasing a lovely, orchestral-ish debut EP in 2014 entitled ‘The Guard,’ Brooklyn musician Domino Kirke had a life changing encounter with Deli favorite Luke Temple (whose debut album ‘Snowbeat’ was our NYC record of the month back in 2007, years before he founded his popular band Here We Go Magic). Luke worked on the electronic arrangements of Domino’s new songs, which are featured in sophomore EP ‘Independent Channel,’ released in March of 2015. Temple is now also part of the live band, which you’ll have the opportunity to see live tonight (June 1st) at Baby’s All Right. Check out also Domino’s brand new video for the EP’s titletrack.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

All Systems Are a Go w/Janelle at Bourbon & Branch June 1

Posted on:

Consistently throbbing basslines, vamping spacey synth, vocals filtered through the fog, and a grounding stampede of percussion, the trio of Janelle, opening tonight at Bourbon & Branch, mesh punk assertiveness with a cosmic shoegazing exploration. The byproduct is a ruminating calm with a heavier foundational bite. All systems are a go, and the music is rapidly gathering steam; however, even as the pressure rises, the band doesn’t break a sweat. A pair of FDH labelmates will be joining Janelle. The battleship of intensity that SGNLS unleashes is fueled via synth, searing shards of guitars and constant churning backend. Currently residing in Nebraska, the expanded synth-punk quintet of Digital Leather (whose new LP All Faded is due out on June 23 via FDH) headline the evening, delivering rapid-paced danceable jams. The "Kosmiche punk" of Throbbing Chakra that includes members of Lantern completes at show certain to shake off those week-starting woes. Brooklyn soul pop AYER starts free June Pianos Residency tomorrow (06.02)

Posted on:

With tunes boasting his angelic voice and uplifting, breezy atmospheres, in just about a year Brooklyn synth-soul-pop one man band AYER has been able to release an impressive string of singles and remixes that obviously resonated with the Soundcloud and Hypem communities (several got hundreds of thousands of plays, this one almost one million). To celebrate his free June Pianos residency, AYER just released this new, vaguely U2-esque single entitled ‘Castaway.’ The residency will begin tomorrow (June 2nd), and will be followed by three more dates on the 9th, 16th and 23rd of the month.

NYC punks Johnny Ain’t Bad release debut ‘Psycho Girl’ EP at Baby’s All Right tomorrow (6.02)

We hardly ever blog about a band that has no streaming music, but brand new, female fronted, NYC punks Johnny Ain’t Bad (previously known as "The Johnny’s NYC) in less than one year of existence have been able to land shows at venues like Irving Plaza, Rough Trade and Baby’s All Right, so we suspect they must be worth checking out. Here’s a short, lo-fi video of one of ther shows… intriguing indeed! The band will be celebrating the release of their debut EP "Psycho Girl" tomorrow (06.02) at Baby’s All Right. Hopefully, after the show some recorded music will be leaking through…

The BallRoom Babies @ the Lazy Flamingo

Posted on:

The Ballroom Babies are a 3 piece rock outfit made of 3 brothers. Steve, Mike and Nathan Collucci from Mississauga, Ontario. All 3 are seasoned musicians having graduated from Humber College’s Music Program. At one point they all separate bands but have come to the conclusion to "never go against the family". They released their first album "Change to Silver" in 2013. Its all cohesive rock n roll with an edge. I particularly like the title track from the album. It starts off with a slow drum beat and a tight chord progression that leads into a dreamy chorus with vocals cut from a Scott Weiland cloth. By the end of the tune it all makes sense…and you’re rocking out. Have a listen….you can see the Ballroom Babies Wednesday June 3rd @ the Lazy Flamingo in Hamilton. -Kris"Big City"Gies

The Deli Philly’s June Record of the Month: Eye of Night – Bad Braids

Posted on:
Eye of Night, the latest album from Bad Braids, the moniker of Megan Biscieglia, offers a record full of hauntingly elegant tales. Co-produced with Jordan Burgis and released on cassette and digitally via Glowing Dagger, the album continues down the enlightening path carved out by its predecessors, Arrow And Orb and Supreme Parallel.

“Intro (Fade)” sets the table, delivering a mind-cleansing mantra of sorts – “Proceed and the rest will fade.” The plucking of an acoustic guitar frames a forest-roaming sensation as Paul Christian’s cello and Jordan Burgis’s organ amplify the eerie surroundings. One continues negotiating through the treacherous terrain in “Jackal,” with its ominous howl and stirring blend of shimmering percussion, beautifully sparse guitar, and flute and bells, demonstrating a supernatural echo.

Lurking in the shadows is “Mara,” as Biscieglia’s vocals take on a sacred air, a call to action delivered as a beautiful comforting chant addressed at the listener – “All come forward to the start of sea/Lay down, lay down with me,” the uncertainty of the musical surroundings are fleshed out as the guitar lead is supplemented by the creepy installments of organ & EWI and lingering vocals.

“Wild Flowers” develops from a peaceful origin, gathering the momentum from percussion as the guitar riff escalates in intensity before easing off and then making a controlled push. “Fever Dream Powers” utilizes the ethereal combination of EWI, theremin and saw, taking the folk aesthetic and enhancing it through the swirling textures the instruments create. The album closer, “Glory, Glory,” retains an unsettling element triggering a cautious burst of adrenaline.

Eye of Night finds Bad Braids pulling listeners into the unknown, led by Biscieglia’s alluring vocals that hint at warmth and comfort. While the surroundings suggest the presence of ghostly dangers, one can’t help but climb deeper into the thicket. – Michael Colavita
