Sisters Elle and Sheeran Puckett, the backbone of Poema, released single "Forget You in LA" at the start of this month. Their life in music is all but set in stone by this anectdote from their childhood in New Mexico: the sisters routinely sang Elvis tunes outside of their local gas station until they had busked enough to buy candy. This track proves to be a little more sophisticated than a rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes;" produced by Nolan Rossi, "Forget You in LA" is a deliberate meditation of getting over a flame and old habits. The girls prove themselves as nothing short of smooth each time they cruise back to the hook amid the measured groove of guitar echoing the languid mood of the tune. "Pretty Speeches" is the name of their upcoming 5-track EP (due out July 10th.) Learn more about the sisters keep atop of Poema news by visiting www.poemamusic.com.
Danger Collective goes full DIY with Runaway 2015 music festival
Last year, Danger Collective Records worked with Lost Dog to bring the DIY Insidelands to Los Globos with acts like Girlpool, Soma (now Celebrity Crush), Casinos, and Together Pangea.
It sold out.
This year, Dylan Thinnes, Mike Morin (&? Productions), Austin Feinstein, Franky Newby, and Reed Kanter (Danger Collective Records) join forces and go double-down with a new name, new venue (Jewels Catch One), and over double the bands.
From heavy hitters like Kool A.D. (of Das Racist) and No Age to LA mainstays like Dream Panther, Slow Hollows, Winter, Dirt Dress, Surf Curse, and Lovely Bad Things, the new Runaway 2015 won’t just live up to the hyper of yesteryear; it’ll set the standard for DIY fests all over Los Angeles. Runaway’s roots run north in the San Fernando Valley, from the 17 year-old star promoter Dylan Thinnes, member of Slow Hollows and friend of Danger Collective Records.
About the presenter: Danger Collective Records is an independent DIY record label started by Reed Kanter and friends two years ago. The label’s ever-growing lineup includes local notables like Casinos, Kid Cassidy, Nirvanus, Best Friend, Zipper Lips, Te Amo, and more. Danger Collective Records’ résumé of events includes shows at The Smell, White Oak Music and Arts, Space Forty-Two, Almost Holden Collection, pehrspace, and more, making them one of the pillars of the Los Angeles underground.

Wildhoney plays show with fellow Baltimore band/Deli artist of the month nominee Big Mouth TONIGHT at The Penthouse
Quick, let your hot date know there’s a change in plans tonight because at 9:30 at The Penthouse Baltimore’s total dreamboat Wildhoney will be playing a show on a diverse lineup with bands from Baltimore, North Carolina, and Britain. It’s kind of your chance for one of those summer of love dance scenes you’ve always sneered at in movies but secretly practiced in your bedroom. But if you don’t catch them tonight before they continue on their U.S. tour with Spook School, you’ll have more chances when they play DC9 Nightclub in DC on 6/25 and Metro Gallery in Baltimore 10/07 (plenty of time to plan for that one). Wildhoney’s latest 3-song record, "17 Forever", gets pretty and gritty with the band’s swooning, atmospheric blend of lo-fi shoegaze and post-punk. The title fits a collection of songs that glitter and brood through a teenage girl’s daydream. Airy vocal harmonies delightfully steer through surrounding storms of percussion, warm fuzz/bass, distancing reverb, and slicing guitars. They’ve been killing it in the past few months : a tour with Whirr, a new music video, and they’ve announced their next EP is due out later this year. Keep at it guys, we’ll be keeping an ear out!

This week DC’s art-pop rockers Pree release music video for “The Dog” and play Brooklyn’s Northside Festival
DC’s art-pop rockers Pree released a video today for "The Dog", their single from that great fancy-dancy record they put out this May, "Rima". The video features lead songbird, May Tobol, doing something many of us would never consider — following a strange clown into dark alleyways and empty playgrounds. Together they explore spinning colors, magical swings, and strange signs on the wall while the song’s narrator explains a tipsy-turvy world and a desire to escape into someone else’s shelter using a pity story : "time to climb/ into the cab and take a drive…/guess I needed another pair of eyes/ so I woke them when I made it to your door/ "I lost my dog"–you let me in/ although I know/ I’ve told you that before." This is a solid album with funk, psychedelic, and blues explorations, electronic decorations, displays of lyrical and vocal strength, warm choral flushes, and occasional distortion. Whenever they’ve been asked to describe themselves they’ve never left out the word colorful. Check out the video bellow, and if you haven’t given "Rima" a listen, get on it! Pree will be playing Brooklyn’s Northside Festival this week (congrats!) before returning home.

Show Review: Vexx with The Cigarette Burns and Chemos
When asked what venue best represents the Portland punk music scene your first thought probably isn’t Black Water bar, but if you want to find the heart of punk music, Black Water is the place to be. That was especially true on May 23rd with Vexx, Chemos and The Cigarette Burns.
The Cigarette Burns started the show in a frenzy, each of their songs louder than the last, proof of entropy in action. That being said their set wasn’t gimmicky, which is a true display of how much they’ve grown in the year they’ve been together. Their sound has become more refined, growing more authentic, powerful, and driven with each show. Erik’s stage performance is feral and absolutely hypnotizing, drawing the crowd in, reminding everyone what it’s like to be young, and since The Cigarette Burns inception each member has only gotten better, growing steadily more technical and confident.
Building on the same chaotic energy of The Cigarette Burns, Chemos took the stage, showing off an array of simple and fast-paced songs that the crowded audience at Black Water seemed into. Chemos is fresh to the Portland music scene and despite being able to get the crowd moving, hopefully they can further define their sound as they continue playing together. Punk music isn’t known for its carefulness of craft, for refinement, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a uniqueness or clarity of voice.
That being said, Chemos ended their set by trashing their drum kit, turning the stage to rubble, so maybe that kind of don’t-care attitude is all they need to keep pulling in crowds.
Vexx however, is completely set apart from their peers because their music stands alone without any showmanship added to it. Their intentionality in songwriting permeates every part of their music. This is especially true in songs like “Stress” or “Clairvoyant” where rhythms build out of chaos and melodic guitar hooks snake themselves out of the tumult. Singer Maryjane Duphne, who is nothing if not unpredictable, personifies all of this. Sure, a singer can pitch themselves into the crowd, drop to their knees or writhe right off the stage, and everyone in the audience will be totally into it, but when Maryjane sings she wanders into an otherworld and she invites you to follow her, trance-like into the hysteria.

What the Festival is Set to Deliver an Epic Fourth Year
The days are getting longer and the weather dude is telling me the temperature isn’t going to dip below 80 degrees anytime soon, so this could only mean one thing, What The Festival 2015 is right around the corner! This year marks the festival’s fourth go-around, and the folks that put this shindig together are gearing up Oregon’s Wolf Run Ranch for another successful weekend.
This festival has a little bit of everything. It takes place on a gorgeous campground about 25 miles east of Mt. Hood. There’s enough room to walk through a (glow in the dark!) forest, lounge on plush sofas, benches, and any other designated or non-designated chill zones, dance in a splash pool with a stage that pumps out beats all day long. You can attend workshops, go to yoga and all that jazz. And to top it off, you get to witness a slew of the top producers and DJs in the game.
Names like Big Gigantic, Griz, and Seattle’s ODESZA top the list of a funkafied lineup, and there is also a number of local acts and up-and-coming artists that fill out the three day extravaganza. This event is held in Oregon for good reason. There is plenty of Portland influence, especially on the music side, here is a list of local flavor:
Indubious – Electronic reggae, or reggae with electronics. Somewhere in the middle of that is the hard hitting duo from Ashland. A live bass player and keys/and synths mix beautifully in front of beats will go off in psychedelic tangents, but always find their way back to the traditional reggae songs they’ve been making for years.
Hustle and Drone – Synth pop straight outta Portland. H&D has seen a large growth of success over the past year. The songs they write have an indie rock influence and always hold a danceable beat.
Ernest Lovers w/ Pete Krebs – Quite a bit of a different pace than the majority of the lineup, but these are local legendary song writers. They will provide a nice break from the chaos and give your brain cells a minute to rejuvenate with some slow and melodic honky tonk.
EPROM – Bass heavy with a little bit of hip hop. EPROM is one of the most notable Portland acts on the list and is set to have a big summer. He makes his beats with old school drum and bass influences and touches and dabbles of dubstep and trap. It’s damn near impossible not to dance for this.
Solovox – Piano extraordinaire and beat maker. Carl Solovox knows how incorporate his refined piano skills and put them to use on a synthesizer. He’s been known to remix some classic rock and roll (Johnny Cash, AC DC, the list goes on) and always creates a dance party of epic proportions.
Barisone – Master of silk and smooth. Barisone has become a household name in the Portland community with a steady working relationship with FAK Wednesdays and Bubblin. His music is grounded in hip hop and R&B and will change what you thought you knew about the word “sexy.”
Device Grips – straight up dance funk – full band! The (relatively) new Portland band, Device Grips are making their name quickly with blues infused horn-heavy funk with a little bit of rap n’ roll to create some of the liveliest music out there. Don’t be the person that has to tell people a year from now that you missed this set because you were trying to get a burrito (nothing against burritos, but trust me on this one).
Lovebomb Go-Go Marching Band – One of the most extravagant acts you’ll see, ever. This band hails from outer space, I assume, given their space helmets and vibrant clad of silver linings that make up their uniforms. Who knows what they’re going to pull out for a festival like this?
Other notable local artists include: Chrome Wolves, Lincoln Up, Mr. Wu, Takimba, Trashcan Joe, PRSN, Tyler Tastemaker, Deafmind, Octaban, Hal-V & Space Case, Quarry, Laura Lynn, Computer Pham, Diablo, and Montel Spinozza.
Moral of this story: Get your tickets to What the Festival and try and catch every one of these!
-Colin Hudson
Spritzer (Matthew Meade of Friend Roulette) plays Matchless on 06.11
We are big fans of Brooklyn’s exper-orchestral collective Friend Roulette, therefore we are happy to highlight this track by Spritzer, the solo project of Matthew Meade, one of that band’s founding members. His single "Melt" takes us back to the summers of the mid 80s, when Lloyd Cole and the Commotions injected a cool, Lou Reed-esque narrational touch to the often overly melodic British pop tradition. You can see Spritzer live at Matchless on Friday 06.12 within the Supercrush Studio, Greenpointers.com and Cara Bella official Northside show featuring a lot of great local artists.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

With the group’s latest Will Yip-produced album, Pale Horses, which you can stream in its entirety at Noisey, the band has created its best record to date. The LP officially comes out digitally on June 16 via Run For Cover Records, with the vinyl being shipped out the following month.
Ghost Town Jenny Supports Tor Miller & Smoke Screen at Swedish American Music Hall – 6/17
The Oakland based folk band, Ghost Town Jenny will be supporting a couple of great out-of-town acts at the Swedish American Music Hall in San Francisco on June 17th. Ghost Town Jenny (led by singer/songwriter, Kym Kylland) is one of the rare local acts you can confidently and definitively call, "folk". Kylland’s music is super pretty, simplistic and a joy to listen to.
Smoke Screen is a soulful electro pop duo that’s going to create a nice crescendo as they’ll follow GTJ on the bill. They’ve got a flashy Hollywood pop style, but their sound embodies more of Los Angeles’ local music scene than a homogenized Hollywood version of a style they originally crafted. They’re talented, polished and will be cool to experience live as well.
Brooklyn’s Tor Miller sounds kind of like the Billy Joel of 2025….or Elton John if he grew up in Williamsburg in 1997. That’s pretty cool. Miller’s piano based ballads are haunting but still pop oriented. It’s possible that he’s going to put on a thorough and emotive show that’s going to make you remember his performance for a long time. Don’t miss this line up at Swedish American Music Hall on June 17th!
Static Mountain Opening for Ed Shrader’s Music Beat & Jackson Scott at KFN June 10
Static Mountain will be returning to the stage tonight when they open for Ed Shrader’s Music Beat at Kung Fu Necktie. The local quartet (featuring Greg Foran and Matt Williams of Lightninging) has been tucked away in the studio working on its next album. They excitedly unleashed their latest single, "Silver & Gold," which is a glimpse at the type of epic psych rock that the group is working on refining, clocking in at eight minutes plus with mountain-climbing harmonies and heavy power chord licks. They’ll also be joined by North Carolina-based, Syd Barrett-esque singer-songwriter Jackson Scott. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.
