GoodKids release new single “Soaring”

Posted on:

“Soaring,” the new single from our top-voted Artist of the Month, GoodKids, sounds like, well, a couple of good kids soaring on comparable feelings. Prominent vocals lend an air of vulnerability from the outset, and the tone is retained once “Soaring" really takes off (sorry) in its final act. The positivity and jingle-jangle pop charm remind me of SoCal ensemble The Mowgli’s, but GoodKids come across that much more intimate for their straight-forward production. Find out when they’re next in your part of town at the band’s Facebook, and get psyched for the show by checking out their Soundcloud. – Brian J.K. Regan

Weekend Warrior, June 12 – 14

Posted on:
Embace the slow-bake of this summertime weather, and come to Vox Populi this Sunday! After releasing The Deli Philly’s June Record of the Month and her last album as a Philly resident, Megan Biscieglia, a.k.a. Bad Braids, will be saying farewell (for now) by serenading us with that powerful angelic voice and her mystical compositions, as she gets ready to set sail for sunny, beautiful (drought-ridden) California. This will obviously be bittersweet. Well, our favorite garage-psych rockers Spacin’ will cut through all that with their live-now-while-you-can rock anthems. They’ll be playing host to Young Widows frontman Evan Patterson, whom performs under the moniker Jaye Jayle, and the shadowy fantasy-pop drone of Zell Row, a.k.a. Amanda Martinez, will be kicking things off. Vox Populi Gallery, 319 N. 11th St., 3rd Floor, 8pm, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

Psych Rockers Stuyedeyed replace Sons of an Illustrious Father at The Deli’s Psych/Indie Stage

Posted on:

We were bummed to learn that Sons of an Illustrious Father couldn’t play tonight’s Indie/Psych B.E.A.F. Stage at Muchmore’s for a family emergency, but we found a last minute replacement in heavy psych rock quartet Stuyedeyed (pronounced: "sty•died"). Their hazy, bluesy psych rock will sure tip tonight’s bill’s balance even more towards the droney side of things. Check out their latest EP "Cursed," and our favorite track "Miscarry On" (streaming) from their debut album "BIRTH," released in January 2015.

Nightjacket releases new single from debut EP, play pre-release show at the Echo on 6.22

Posted on:

Dream pop quintet Nightjacket go for a paisley vibe on their latest single "It’s Alright", a tender and sophisticated number with light psychedelic elements that brings to mind the woozy, country-tinged elements of mid-career Mazzy Star. Singer Holland Belle’s vocals are more affective than langorous, though, her resonant vocal exertions a good fit for the band’s brisk, jangly tempo. Mixed by Jeff Ziegler (The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile), the songs on their debut EP, Eternal Phase, sound impressively confident, never straying from solid songwriting even when they’re just about to verge into droning atmospheric textures.

The self-released Eternal Phase comes out in digtal markets on June 23, which the band will be celebrating with a pre-release show the night before at The Echo.

"It’s back and it’s better than ever!! We All Together Presents Hickey Fest 2015. Hickey Fest is a 3-day independent music festival featuring 25 bands, community campgrounds, psychedelic projections and other relaxing adventures held in Leggett, California in Mendocino County, just 3 hours north of the Bay Area. Named after Standish Hickey State Park, where the South Fork of the Eel River shimmers against a backdrop of majestic redwoods, Hickey Fest takes place over summer solstice weekend: Friday-Sunday, June 19-21 – the 3 longest days of the year and somehow the 3 longest nights. With group camping at Standish Hickey State Park and bands playing across the way at The Peg House, Hickey Fest is a special summer treat. The Peg House features a shaded outdoor stage and patio area, a sandwich shack with vegan options and lots of tasty micro-brews on tap, and a general store for all your last-minute camping and grocery needs. Katie Colver, the Bay Area’s own favorite musical yogi, will offer Showga (yoga accompanied by live music) each morning. Lance Gordon will be lighting up the night with his Mad Alchemy liquid light show and psychedelic projections. Get a taste of what’s in store with this fun Hickey Fest Video from Arsenii Vaselenko."

Jet Trash Releases New Single – Photography is Over

Posted on:

The San Francisco garage surf rock band, Jet Trash has released a new single entitled, Photography is Over. This band has just emerged in the last couple of years, but they’re enjoying some nice attention for their upcoming debut self titled EP due out on July 14th on Burger Records imprint, Wiener Records.

Jet Trash know what it means to be a quintessential West Coast band. They proudly carry the torch of their predecessors The Sonics and The Ventures, joining the ranks of aforementioned Bay Area contemporaries Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees in cranking out modern indie-rock updates on classic ’60s garage-surf. Armed with vintage Fenders and reverb-soaked tube amps, the band’s energetic lo-fi anthems have a youthful immediacy, their massive hooks curling like breaking waves. It’s a sound that has already won the hearts of Jet Trash’s hometown, The Deli SF voting them one of the best up-and-coming bands of 2014 and The Bay Bridged dubbing them “the cream of the crop” of San Francisco locals.

It’s nice to see new local bands doing well! Enjoy this summer time rock track that’s perfect for jamming while heading to the beach on (rare) hot days in the Bay Area!

Hello Shark Radiates at Everybody Hits June 12

Posted on:

There’s internal strength that radiates from Hello Shark’s ability to create songs that provide a truly personal point of view. That ability to expose vulnerability and spin it out of the dark corners of one’s mind into a better, brighter space in those odd yet beautiful lyrical images is a rare gift. Tonight, at Everybody Hits, Hello Shark will be joined in by Peter Gill’s alt-country-folk sound known as Friendship, coating engaging narratives in sparse instrumentation. Abi Reimold’s haunting folk that takes on elements of an imposing storm is also set to perform, potentially showcasing new material, while psych-pop trio Seismic Thrust completes the evening of local talent. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

The City and Horses bring their Loungy Dream Pop to The Living Room tonight (06.12)

Posted on:

Those who are growing resentful of the attitude affecting many Brooklyn hipster/bands’ may take solace in The City and the Horses‘ music, a NYC/Philly band that’s been around since the late aughts. Their loungy pop is as colorful, multifceted and transparent as a glass marble. It also prominently features – among many others – an instrument that is bound to come back in vogue at some point: the flute. The band recently found a cozy spot under the wing of Brooklyn’s label/event organizer Paper Garden Records, which booked them for their Northside Fest show, scheduled for tonight at The Living Room. On the bill also NY-ers Salt Cathedral, ARMS, Stranger Cat, and Spritzer among others. Check out also their new video for their electronic ballad "Re-Inking."
