NYC synthpop with an ’80s flavor: Wonderful Humans
NYC synthpop couple Wonderful Humans (who recently made our Best of 2015 Emerging NYC Bands list) unleashed a series of single in the last year that gathered interest on Soundcloud. Earlier this year they released "Just What I needed," which evokes East Village era Madonna. Yet, a practical approach to love, in lyrics like, “I wanted more/But I think you got it/Now that I know you’re/Just what I wanted,” is a slightly-cynical reboot worthy of the Girls epoch. More recent single "Don’t You" (streaming), references the ’80s in a darker way, adding playful fake saxophones (an instrument that defined that decade) to an otherwise fully electronic arrangement.
New Music Video: “Doin’ It Right” – STS x RJD2
Directed by Nick Rose, this new music video for “Doin’ It Right” combines live footage from STS & RJD2‘s performance with West Philadelphia Orchestra at Underground Arts and the studio version of the track. It brings to life the commanding exuberance of the song and collaboration. The enlistment of the lively, bouncing funk of WPO further accentuates the party-down atmosphere that it creates. STS returns to Underground Arts on Tuesday, June 9 to support The Very Best and Heems.
Show Alert: James Wallace and the Naked Light at The Stone Fox 5.21
We’re stoked for this opportunity to see eclectic indie rocker James Wallace and the Naked Light at the Stone Fox this Thursday. With a sprawl of influences from gospel to African music to The Kinks, Wallace’s creations may be some of the easiest-listening sonic schizophrenia this side of the Mississippi. This 2013 release "More Strange News from Another Star" was as proudly out there as anything from Devendra Banhart, with the same comfortable hominess as fellow Nashvillian Langhorne Slim. Being vigins to his live show, we’re interested to see how it translates to the Stone Fox stage on the 21st, when he and the crew opens up for ‘baroque folk" of Asheville’s River Whyless. The lineup is further complimented by Southern Gothic outfit and Deli faves Honey Locust. The show kicks off at 9pm, and cover is $8.
Faiyaz and the Wasted Chances @ the Horseshoe
Faiyaz and the Wasted Chances come from a dirty garage somewhere in Toronto. They play beautifully dirty garage rock. They’re most recent single "Open" could have been invented anywhere in the 50s, 60s or 70s. Lucky for us it’s brand new and that means there could be even more psychedelic pop rock still to come from these guys. The reverby guitars blend so well with the lazy vocals. It makes for a great track to zone out to on a hot day. Faiyaz and The Wasted Chances play The Horseshoe Tavern on Wednesday May 20. Don’t waste your chance to see them!-Kris"Big City"Gies
Kerouacs @ Johnny Jackson
Just when you though rock’n’roll was dead, The Kerouacs have found it! Dragging obvious influences from the early 60’s and 70’s tunes you grew up loving. These guys are pumping out driving rock songs, pairing them up with freight train harmonies, energetic bass lines, and a killer onstage presence. They effortlessly succeeded in knocking the roof off kilter at The Baltimore House in Hamilton last Friday night. As their set progressed, so did their energy, with each member getting increasingly more animated – most interestingly, singer/guitar player Elias Regier, whose limbs seemed to freeze up – think back to Bugs Bunny helping Yosemite Sam find gold. Not only are the dudes playing killer tunes, but they’re also having fun doing it, and it shows! If you’ve never seen ‘em, your chance is coming up soon; they’re playing 05/30 @ Johnny Jackson.-Courtney Chalapenko
Tennis System releases new video “Ungrown,” playing The Echo residency in June
Punkgaze trio Tennis System, who built an empire of sound in the DC and LA scenes, released their newest video for "Ungrown," the third track from their 2014 album Technicolour Blind. Produced by and featuring Erica Terenzi of Italy’s dreampop team Be Forest, the video matches swerving guitars and sun-blistered vocals with nostalgic memories simmered in psychedelic color. This release comes two weeks shy of Tennis System’s long-awaited residency at The Echo. Catch them each Monday night in June with local alternative acts new and old, including United Ghosts, Blood Candy, Teenage Wrist, and THE FLASH HITS.
When interviewed by Free Bike Valet on what to expect for the residency, Tennis System’s Matty T said: “We’re going to be trying out new songs, playing a lot off of our latest release Technicolour Blind, some off of Teenagers, and some really old ones. Each week will be different. I don’t want to give too much away, but I can assure you won’t want to miss one. Each one builds off of the week prior.”

Volutes @ Quenchers
Volutes is the work of Christina Dennaoui and back in early 2014 we shared her debut EP Elegant Grey. A few months ago she shared a new single, "Lossless", from her upcoming LP, The Quite Hours.
Volutes performed earlier this month at Transitor and has posted her full set on soundcloud. You can catch her live at Quenchers on May 21st.
Kim Boekbinder completes her “169 one-minute songs” fundraising endeavor
As you can gather from her website, electronic artist Kim Boekbinder is a New Yorker full of imagination and ideas, and her music reflects that. She released EP "The Sky Is Calling" in 2013, featuring striking single "Stellar Alchemist." Its video (streaming below) was seen by over 150k people. More recently, to support her next release, she wrote a one-minute song for every hundred dollars she raised, and called it mission accomplished at 169 one-minute songs – all the tracks are gathered here. Legendary British songwriter Momus – who lived in NYC for some time – had a similar idea a few years ago, but approached the concept in a more personal (and pricey) way, writing a full song about each person contributing $1,000.
