Dreamy, NYC Femme Fatale on the rise: Jennie Vee tours with Courtney Love

Posted on:

Jennie Vee is a rather – shall we say – glamorous looking  NYC musician and singer songwriter who plays a brand of dream pop that flirts with modern rock. The young lady is obviously good at getting into the right "circles" – apparently she’s become Courtney Love’s best friend, if not "muse" (whatever that may mean!), which led to the two touring together. Jennie released her debut EP ‘Die Alone‘ in 2014, and she recently unveiled this video for the cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s legendary single "Lips Like Sugar." The song will be featured in Vee’s upcoming EP "Spying," due for a middle June release.

A Night of Neo-Soul With Brownish Black

Posted on:

While it could be quite the challenge to develop your own sound within the lexicon of classic soul and r&b, Brownish Black seem both worthy and excited about the task at hand. Formed in 2010 the band has been growing in numbers and evolving their neo-soul sound that could easily be found on NYC goldmine label Daptone (home to Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Charles Bradley etc). With a slender and soulful white male leading the raucous r&b they could also be mistaken for pop soul darlings Fitz & the Tantrums. Yet comparisons aside Brownish Black are unique to Portland and are striving to forge their own path.

Given the somewhat challenging position of filling an empty dance floor with Portlanders who just finished a workweek, Brownish Black brought their high energy and infectious rhythms to the opening slot Friday night at the eclectic (read underrated) Star Theater. Seattle based psyche-afro-funk outfit Polyrhythmics were headliners.

Playing a mix of music from their previous EP’s as well new material Brownish Black sounded tight throughout. Performing new single “Life Lessons” lead singer M.D. Sharbatz was vocally strong although slightly distracted by the harsh lighting directed on stage. During a mid-set exit, Sharbatz returned with a black cap covering his eyes, which provided reprieve but perhaps distanced himself from the audience. While a stoic looking horn section successfully focused on taking care of business the bongo/conga player was focused on starting a party. The show continued, the floor filled, and the crowd released their weekday worries. Incorporating a cover of Portland’s very own Exploding Hearts “I’m a Pretender” along with a Brownish original entitled “Rock n Roll” as a tribute to blues legend BB King (who passed away that day) the second half of their set was climatic and cathartic.

It would be difficult not to mention the lack of female lead singer Mz. V (Vicki Porter), a once integral member and wonderful counterpart to Sharbatz’ vocals and energy, who recently left the band for other pursuits. While Porter is featured on the new album she certainly will be missed and the band is planning rotating guest appearances as they move forward with their first full-length release next month under Breakup Records.

With a charismatic, feel-good, neo soul sound Brownish Black have the talent, energy, and possible ambition to grow beyond Portland and the Northwest.

See them for their record release of Life Lessons at the Goodfoot Lounge on June 11.

NYC Record of the Month: Annique Monet (Live at Baby’s All Right on 05.26)

Posted on:

Some records have the ability to plunge the listener into some kind of alternate reality. Annique Monet‘s uber-psychedelic debut album ‘Phantom Letters‘ will do that to you. It took a few notes for opening track "Salt, Veruca," (streaming) to hypnotize us with its haunting beginning: a simple electric piano part, whistles, a fake horn section and a droney verse slowly led us towards a celestial chorus, which was quickly fogotten – for good – in favor of a baroque, droney outro. The following track ‘Voodoo‘, a grottesque and dissonant waltz, took us to a really weird (and scary) place: we saw the devil looking at us through the speakers, from Vienna. With a beautiful melody, the first few bars of "Nowhere"  brought back some hope for a return to light, but the song didn’t go anywhere – we should have expected it, considering the title. ‘Relapse‘ delivered another waltz – a more subtle one – but filled to the brim with eerie and decadent melancholy. From its plodding intro, Turtlenecks in July resurrected the ghost of The Beatles’ psychedelic pop, although sounding nothing like it, while in ‘52,’ Greek mermeids lured us with the most ghostly of lithanies, asking us to join them – and drown. The following two songs on the record kept this beautifully absurd, elusive dream going, with noteworthy track "Unchange" closing the collection.

Although we often praise structure in songwriting (many songs here would benefit from more of it), there’s very little structure in a dream – which is what this album is. In a scene that seems to have lost the imagination of its peak years, this is a record that will hopefully inspire other NYC artists to be more daring. You can catch Annique Monet live at Baby’s All Right on May 26.

Melodic prog-punk duo The Littlest Viking say next LP will be “emo Santana’s ‘Supernatural’ album”

Posted on:

Three years ago, The Deli caught a whiff of The Littlest Viking on their self-titled LP off Mountain Man Records. It was hairy. It was sweaty. It was 12 songs of start-stop rhythms and callus-inducing riffage that would make Pete & Pete beam with pride.

The labor and lust of Ruben "Emo" Cortez and "Metal" Christopher Gregory (first released in 2009) matches breakneck shredding and irregular time signatures that are as fun to play as they are to dance to, influenced by bands like Jawbreaker, Drive Like Jehu, and American Football. Fans of Giraffes? Giraffes! and Cinemechanica will feel right at home in TLV’s whirlwind of perspiration and referential music jokes.

This year, Littlest Viking is setting out to do the near-impossible: work a new album with a well-thought out pop direction. Says Cortez:

"While the first album was a portrait of two young punks trying to play every lick and fill we knew with ridiculous speed and the second album was a more self-aware album where we were trying to sift through the previous work, this new album is a focused collection of songs that is more methodical and self-edited than previous. We joke around that it’s going to be an emo Santana’s "Supernatural" album, which will make sense once it’s fully completed and we can finally get a callback from Michelle Branch."

And if you’re itching to see, smell, and hear these guys perform, you’re in luck: Littlest Viking will be joining Young Lovers for their third night of residency/music video premiere at Pehrspace on May 25th.

Corsica Arts Club releases debut EP, play the Satellite in June

Posted on:

Corsica Arts Club have fully evolved into their own identity with their self-titled debut EP, four catchy tracks of spiky guitars and lush electronics that invigorate with a gentle, cool mist. The original project of Brendan Thompson and Arash Parsee, they’ve since matured into a thrillingly confident quintet to bring their Labrador records-recalling indie pop into a live setting.

The band is celebrating the EP’s June 9 release with an album release show at the Satellite on June 12th.

Video Premiere: The Love Dimension – Inner Eye Insight + Show at GAMH – 5/23

Posted on:

The San Francisco based psychedelic revivalist band, The Love Dimension has shared a new music video for Inner Eye Insight, a single from their latest album, Create and Consume. The video was directed by Matt Robeson of White Light Prism.

"Matt took us around the Bay Area last December and January on location to various spots in Oakland, San Francisco and Marin County. Hiking around with all that gear into all of those nature spots wasn’t easy, but we had a lot of fun filming this so want to share it with you." Jimmy Dias, lead singer/songwriter of TLD

Oh, we’re so into the love-centric, esoteric lyrics of Inner Eye Insight and the amazing nature shots going on in the video. It’s really nice to see the band’s six member full line up grooving all in one shot!

Check out the video and then take the opportunity to see The Love Dimension perform live at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on Saturday, May 23rd. The show will also include performances by Cellar Doors, Buzzmutt and The Bad Jones.

Blood Warrior Release New Record, Letter Ghost

Posted on:

Letter Ghost, the latest release from Portland, ME’s Blood Warrior, is an eerily-beautiful record. The vocals on these tracks are some of the most honest and chilling I’ve heard in recent months. The lead vocals are dripping in sorrow and intense emotion–the singer’s voice rising, falling, even quivering on some notes. I guess the best way to put it might be that Letter Ghost sounds like a mournful musical eulogy.

My favorite track was "All Your Thoughts", with its poignant lyrics and ghostly backing vocals. This song is perhaps the best example of the dirge-esque qualities of Letter Ghost, evoking visions of a mournful procession slowly making its way to the burial grounds.
