The Taste
Thrilling people with their 70’s style pop-rock tunes, The Taste is one those hidden gems that we were ever-so-happy to stumble across. Their EP Sea Legs, proves to be a great listen! It is filled with twinkling keys and old-school production elements; mixing a little new with a little old, a tight rhythm connection with smooth vocals and catchy chorus’. These guys are lacing up the dancing shoes for you, and all you’ve gotta do is groove. "The City" hits vocal heights with a toe tapping melody that takes off with soaring guitars and keys. We bet you can’t listen to just once! We can’t stop listening at all. Make sure to check out their Facebook for upcoming show dates. -Courtney Chalapenko
Brews Willis @ Lee’s Palace
I’ve noticed the band name Brews Willis before and thought it was awesome. So of course I wasn’t surprised when their tunes were pretty sweet too. "Party’s Over" sounds like it came straight from the 90s. Props to the singer’s mustache too. The next track was "Great Energy" from their previous release of the same name. "Great Energy" started with some cool reverby surf guitar and would morph into a full on punk rock song that has…yup…great energy. The ooh wee ooh’s in the chorus added a nice touch. They’re playing Lee’s Palace on May 7th for Canadian Music Week. Killer gig for a deadly band. Go!-Kris “Big City” Gies
Asian NYC Rapper Awkwafina celebrates book release at Baby’s All Right on 05.07
Awkwafina, fresh and clean queen of hipster tRap, boasts about watching “A League of Their Own on Laser Disc” and shopping for things she can’t afford “like a millenial.” She produces her own tracks, was featured in a documentary about Asian rappers, and even just had her first book published. Her brand of crass feminism isn’t uncommon among the hipster rap pack (See Handjob Academy and Nova Rockefeller), but her swagger indicates a brass set of ovaries. Come celebrate her book release at Baby’s All Right this Thursday May 7th, it will be quite “ratchet.” – BrokeMc
New Track: “Hey Joan” – The Stammer
With a nod to Lou Reed, The Stammer throw their hat into the ring for your next favorite summertime jam. The bouncy, driving rhythm and ebb-and-flow guitar licks of "Hey Joan" bring a joyous mood to what sounds like a difficult situation. "The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has ever had to give hard advice to a friend," says the band’s frontman Brian Brotman. It’s the first single from The trio’s upcoming full-length album, which was mixed by Kyle Pulley at Headroom Studios.
Junk Boys bring Satanic blues back to The Gutter on May 14
Is blues the music of the Devil? The minor third note interval that’s the basic ingredient of anything bluesy is famous for conveying a sad feeling, not evil, but – at least according to Wikipedia – "the word [blues] may have come from the term blue devils," and "depending on the religious community a musician belonged to, it was more or less considered as a sin to play this low-down music." W guess that simple fact made the genre very attractive to young rebels… who ended up moving to the more liberal US coasts…
Brooklyn’s Junk Boys, an obscure band we stumbled upon almost randomly, seems to accept and even promote this notion. Their debut single "Call On Me" (streaming) features a devilish cover art, and an apocaliptic sound at least in part reminiscent of a hammondless and heavier version of The Doors, another band that enjoyed blue references to Beelzebub. You can participate in their pagan live ritual at the Gutter on May 14.
P.S. We found some more info about Junk Boys on The Men’s website: "ex-members of Organs, Russ from Dream Police."
Bands in the studio interview: Elliot Moss + live at Rough Trade on May 15
For some songwriters, writing good songs is simply not satisfying enough – and besides, that’s not how their creative process works. These musicians feels compelled to wrap those songs in complex arrangements and original sounds, and sometimes those are actually the starting point of what then becomes a song, in a beautifully bizarre reversed music production process. In their tracks, sound design has as much importance as lyrics, chords and structure. 21 years old Elliot Moss belongs to this category, so we thought he might have something interesting to say about his creative process and the gear he loves – read the interview on our sister blog Delicious Audio. Elliot Moss will perform live at Rough Trade on May 15.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Daughn Gibson‘s alluring baritone exudes such sex appeal and wisdom all at once in his latest track "It Wants Everything." It’s the second single from his forthcoming album Carnation, which is due out June 2 via Sub Pop. The record was produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Akron/Family, Six Organs of Admittance, etc.).
