Album Premiere: Old Earth – ...until they’re called

Posted on:

Bay Area based experimental folk rock singer/songwriter, Todd Umhoefer, better known as Old Earth has given us the pleasure of premiering his brand new EP entitled …until they’re called. If the name of his collaborative music project doesn’t give you an idea of the sound of his music, we can surely report that this new Old Earth release is rootsy, earthy and folk rock based with strong elements of avant classical music.

The album features four other musicians, mysteriously referred to as, Burnett, Fritch, Lopez and Moen bring an eerie "Sleepy Hollow" style of depth to the three track EP. There are a couple creative elements that we like: first thing is that the three songs are composed to musically play into one another, making the EP one long 12 minute track. We also like that Umhoefer collaborates with a female vocalist, as mixed gender collaborations seem to be cropping up in the local folk scene these days. We’ve recently seen Travis Hayes work a female voice into his new music and we think it’s cool.

Old Earth is a polished but not self serving solo project that has a lot of sincerity and even more portential. He’s got the "knowing" vibe of Neutral Milk Hotel and is willing to take creative risks

League of Wolves

Posted on:

League of Wolves are heading to Canadian Music Week from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. So of course those prairie boys have sweet beards. They just released a self titled album. I fired into it…starting at the top with "Runaway". Groovy beats and mean electric guitar will get your outta your seat and over to the bar…you’ll make it to the dance floor eventually. The next track "Ariella" had a more mellow vibe…could be reggae-sized if they really wanted to. Also showed off their harmonies. Nice variety in the top 2 tracks. They’re playin back to back nights for CMW first on Wednesday May 6th at Rancho Relaxo then at the Bier Market on Thursday May 7th.-Kris "Big City"Gies

Playing everywhere in Brooklyn, now: Whitewash at Brooklyn Bazaar on 05.08

Posted on:

In their Facebook timeline, Brooklyn’s dream rockers Whitewash wonder: "…not even quite sure how we started getting all these ridiculously large gigs but hey I’m not complaining." As a matter of fact the band has a rather busy May with shows at Brooklyn Bazar on the 8th, Aviv on the 14th, and Baby’s All Right on the 16th (a Saturday). On their bandcamp profile we find a very mellow acoustic single dated 2013, and 2014 EP "Fraud in Lisbon," which, although lacking a little in the production department (it sounds self-produced), showcases a band with promising songwriting chops. Recent singles "Tentacle" – streaming below – and "Member" show us a more solid sounding band with a sound that can appeal to lovers of Real Estate’s chilled pop and Pavement’s slacker aesthetics.

Circadian Rhythms Opening for The Apache Relay at JB’s May 5

Posted on:

Circadian Rhythms are the type of group that raise the joy factor in the air. With cascading well-rounded tunes that sprinkle in strolling pieces of keys, xylophone, horns, etc. and marrying them with enriching ensemble harmonies, the band carves out a place that recognizes the past, but still works in the present. It’s casual comfort that opens the doors wide open without losing focus in the process. Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, they’ll have copies of their latest EP A Passing Thought and new tunes to share. Circadian Rhythms will be joined by the folky, Americana Nashville outfit Great Peacock, who has also a new record, Making Ghosts, due out May 12. Fellow Nashville natives The Apache Relay headline, knitting together ironed-vocals stretched out over a large rootsy field. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Recommended shows: Icewater plays Baby’s All Right on 05.13

Brooklyn’s Icewater writes songs that are spaced-out, anthemic, and optimistic. Not that the band hasn’t seen its share of tragedy. During the recording of their cheekily titled 2013 LP, "Collectors Edition," guitarist and founding member Grant Martin unexpectedly passed away, giving both its buoyant and small moments of sadness an extra layer of depth. The band released a more upbeat, but not necessarily sunnier, self titled EP at the end of 2014. Check out single "Wisecrack" below and don’t miss the band live at Baby;s All Right on May 13. – Emilio Herce

kidDEAD, “Patrick Swayze”

Posted on:

kidDEAD released this video for "Patric Swayze" on April 30th, along with the caution that "this video could potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised." Of course, this should perk up that brain center where one’s 5th-grade mentality still resides, because anything that comes with a warning label is instantly better. Morbid fascination for forbidden fruit aside, this is a solid video is for one some the sleeper hits off of kidDEAD’s debut album "Rap and Destroy" (though, seriously, don’t watch it in a dark room.) We enjoyed his first album very much last year, and we’re glad that this most serious of tracks, with all of its urgency and self-loathing, is getting another go-round. It puts a spotlight on Norton’s strength as a lyricist, and his ability to show some emotion without being insufferable. This video coincides with kidDEAD’s “No Gods, No Genres” tour (which just kicked off at the Stone Fox on May 1st,) as well as the release of his brand new 3-track EP “Truth Bombs.” Check out the new material over in iTunes, and keep an eye out for his next home town gig at www.kiddead.com.

Discopunk trio The Electric West performing at Pehrspace 5.9

Posted on:

Echo Park’s post-punk revivalists The Electric West have been waiting for the perfect storm. Since 2013, bassist/vocalist Lee Lewallen and drummer Byron Pagdilao have laid the foundations to their self-recorded Dusty Trails demo, with a style that culls from dance-punk acts like Gang of Four, Bloc Party, and The Dead Kennedys. The induction of guitarist Dee Fuzz has galvanized The Electric West, charging through the rolling thunder with magnetic riffs and a light drizzle of reverb. They’ve played with rising LA acts like the pop-punk WASI, new wavers PANTHAR, and surf punk vets Dustin and the Explosions.

Their debut EP “Verdugo,” released in March by Future Force Records, breaks away from politically charged lyricism of Dusty Trails with songs like “Disco Viking,” “Tesla’s Coyotes,” and a rework of 2014’s “Replicant.” See The Electric West perform during Ghost Noise’s first night of residency at Pehrspace, and listen to the opening track to their new EP, “Portland.” – Ryan Mo
