Ghost Lit Kingdom release new single “You Don’t Know Me”

Posted on:

Indie music reining from Los Angeles seems to be in abundance nowadays, but with so many musicians trying to make it big in a place full of ‘stars’ seems near impossible now. So what can musicians do to stand out? Ask Ghost Lit Kingdom. The quintet has a way with words, and their incredibly dynamic style of ‘indie’ music is quickly catching fans by storm. Redefining the genre with an innovative mix of folk, pop, hip-hop, jazz, electric and alternative, Ghost Lit Kingdom has escalated to a new type of genre.

Their newest single, "You Don’t Know Me", is a masterful ballad that leaves listeners with goose bumps and an overwhelming feeling of losing self-control. “My body wants no part of me, steady as it goes.. .you don’t know me”, sings lead singer Ela Kitapci, a constant struggle to try and figure out what we are capable of doing in this world while trying to figure yourself out, too. Many adult teens growing up find complications in trying to define who they are, and the lyrics send the message that sometimes you don’t necessarily have to. This is the first single of many to come this year, and their growing fan base is sure to follow them on their journey to musical success. – Kayla Hay

Post-rock quartet Young Lovers announce residency at Pehrspace

Posted on:

Young Lovers are a post-rock band based in Los Angeles whose music perfectly captures the infinite of the moment. Listeners can trace elements of Broken Social Scene, Mogwai, and Explosions In The Sky from their debut self-titled LP, but the band’s combination of impeccable technique and sonic exploration is more than pastiche: the ideas behind their LP have been continually refined since the band’s inception in 2011. Their debut single “Omnia” is perhaps the brightest of stars in the album, rousing feelings of sublimity by building up riff and rhythm to glorious crash and rapture.

Young Lovers will be taking up residency at Pehrspace through the second half of May, and will be joined by other talented acts throughout Los Angeles County to perform. The Deli is proud to feature these select bands to raise awareness, as well as new and exclusive performances by Young Lovers. Best of all, each night of the residency is open to all ages, and entry is only $5! See them next Saturday with a diverse cast: Brooklyn’s experimental R&B group Ava Luna, Stones Throw’s minimalist soul/R&B duo SILK Rhodes, and OC’s math-rock upstarts Media Jeweler. Get your Friday feels on with Young Lovers’ track “Omnia” below.

Aaron Schroeder’s nearly perfect Seattle mix-tape

This guy. Man, let me tell you, he knows what’s up. He’s usually heard your favorite Seattle band waaaay before you (and sometimes even before the band has even heard themselves) because he’s often the one recording them at the super duper BLDGs recording studio. So obviously it was only right to ask him to compile the jams that really get him stoked about the music here. Listen below for a definitive slice of Seattle that should be posted on the the Seattle wikipedia page because of how legit it is. Enjoy!

Brooklyn rapper Chelsea Reject releases ‘CMPLX’ at Mercury on Monday (5.11)

Posted on:

St. Lucia-rooted, Brooklyn-based rapper Chelsea Reject shoots verbal bullets with a deft blend of introspection and consciousness. On songs such as the keys-sparkled “Gotta Shine” (streaming), the twenty-one-year-old musician (born Chelsea Alexander) starts with an identifiable story of integrity-seeking but then, with a single “you,” widens her quick flow to touch on subjects such as impoverishment, oppression, and national tragedy. With the horn-sloped “Go,” Reject ponders her purpose in a money-rounded world, effectively speaking for fellow strivers. One gets the sense, when listening to her smoothly assured voice, though, that the artist isn’t trying to make grand statements as much as relate her views. She does so thrillingly. Chelsea Reject performs on Monday 5.11 at The Mercury Lounge as part of the release for her ‘CMPLX’ album. – Zach Weg

Hop Along’s lead singer/songwriter Frances Quinlan is not a fan of musical comparisons to her work. Rather, she, along with the rest of band – Mark Quinlan, Tyler Long, and Joe Reinhart, just usually don’t get them. That makes sense when you’re a group that is hard to narrow down into one genre. There’s punk there, but there’s emo, and folk, and even hardcore too. But what’s most memorable of all about Hop Along, as any fan could tell you, is Quinlan’s voice – a rasp of power and vulnerability. On their new album, Painted Shut, released earlier this week via Saddle Creek, she tells twisted tale after twisted tale with vocals that are raw, genuine and shatteringly beautiful. She has the strength to add depth to those sort of awkward encounters like running into an old friend while working at a restaurant. (Quinlan has worked as a server and house painter on and off between tours.) Hop Along has relayed a bit of nervousness about their latest creation with producer John Agnello, but Painted Shut is so pure that it’s sure to be loved by their growing fan base. They’ll be joined this Saturday at Union Transfer by local pals Thin Lips, whom are currently on tour with them, and CliqueUnion Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $14, All Ages (Photo by Ally Newbold) – Emily DiCicco

“A Smiling Parabola of Excitement”: An Interview with Jonah Furman of Krill

Posted on:

Boston Calling returns for yet another impressive festival this May and of course, the lineup is brilliant. Along with continuing the trend of attracting incredible big-name talent–this spring’s headliners include: Beck, My Morning Jacket, Tenacious D, and Pixies–Boston Calling has also booked two powerful local opening acts in The Ballroom Thieves and Krill. Recently, I had a chance to exchange a few emails with Jonah Furman, lead vocalist and bass player for Krill. Though the group is known as a “Boston band”, Furman and crew are actually all originally from the suburbs of Chicago. Currently, Furman is the only member who resides in Boston (drummer Ian Becker and guitarist Aaron Ratoff moved to NYC in 2014). Despite the distance, Furman says it hasn’t been difficult to keep the band going.  “It’s not tough to practice when you play shows every ten days or so!”, writes Furman. “It’s kind of weird doing a LDR [long distance relationship] band, [but] I don’t plan to move to NYC anytime soon.”

Click here to read an abridged version of the conversation. If you’re too busy scrolling through pictures of food and cats on Instagram and want a synopsis: highlights include being offered to play Boston Calling, dealing with unexpected success, and the debilitating effects of consumerism on the world.

Never Give Up Your Rebellious Youth w/Pissed Jeans at JB’s May 8

Posted on:

It’s a good weekend for punk in Philly, and Pissed Jeans, Philly hardcore veterans, are starting it off tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The Allentown/Philly four-piece has been creating heavy, violent, rock and roll for about a decade, and has recorded four turbulent albums along the way, the last three of which have been released by legendary Sub Pop Records. On their most recent album, Honeys, produced by Alex Newport, the boys sounded a bit more refined, which is not to say that they don’t still can’t creat a serious mosh pit, but they’ve rounded out the edge of that head-banging metal. Frontman Matt Korvette still screams the kind of lyrics that you can’t help but relate to, like the pains of being something of a man-child in this day and age on “Teenage Adult.” Come on out this evening, and never give up your rebellious youth! Lovers League Album Release Show at Boot & Saddle May 8

Posted on:

Lovers League celebrates the release of 2 (produced by Bill Moriarty) this evening at Boot & Saddle. Reverend TJ McGlinchey and Dani Mari seamlessly lace together vocals providing a heartfelt dual-focused perspective. The album has a gentle folk-country-blues sway, with a simple approach that hits home because the hopeful sentiments expressed through those natural harmonies have a timeless appeal. The slowly escalating, steady-churning Americana-blues of the Levee Drivers occupy the middle slot as August John Lutz II vocals yearn with a gut-tearing tension, coupled with the ever-warming fire of instrumentation that could set off at any moment. The spacey, searching, eclectic musical explorations of Vilebred get things started. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., $10, 8:30pm, 21+ (Photo by Lisa Schaffer) – Michael Colavita
