Alex Vans’ “Velocirapture”

Posted on:

It’s been a few years since the release of Alex Vans’ first full length DJ Booth. It’s a solid and catchy record, full of promise. After recording, Alex formed his backup band The Hide Away, and they’ve played some 200 shows. Recently, most of those shows have been tributes to Beck, and fans (including myself) were starting to wonder when Alex was gonna fulfill the promise of the first album. I’m happy to say the wait is over.

Vans and The Hide Away are dropping their first new single since DJ Booth, "Velocirapture" on May 5th. It’s a bright rocker, exceeding the expectations of earlier work. It’s at least as catchy, with a deeper, more formed and practiced sound. Somewhere between Tom Petty and Beck, Alex has found his home. I, for one, believe in the Raptor.

You can catch Alex and The Hide Away at Iota May 9th for a Beck tribute set (part of a huge 1996 showcase featuring tributes to Ras Kass, Weezer, The Cranberries, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos), before The "Velocirapture" Single Release Party, on May 16th at Hill Country Barbecue (w/ Short Lives). –Natan Press

Joel Magid: A Welcome Spring Anthem

Posted on:

Some songs effortlessly capture a moment in time. For late spring’s warmth and slower, sunny days comes Joel Magid’s “Since You Went Away.” The sugary-sweet psych pop track captures a mood: one of longing, looking, and desire while remaining upbeat, catchy, and fun. Magid debuted the video for his song on Alt Citizen last week.

Magid’s debut album Pyramids is out this summer. Catch Magid at The Liquor Store on April 29.

Silver Dollars bring their Americana to Bar Matchless tonight (4.22)

Posted on:

7-piece NYC band Silver Dollars are a big helping of home-fried Americana. Truly— the lyrics yearn exactly for drinking cheap beer around the fire after supper, slow western winds, old trucks, soul food, and romanticized ideas of a simpler life. Harmonicas are soaring, steel guitars juddering, and a man dips into the lows of his voice to mourn the loss of love and home among a lonesome cityscape. They play The Cakeshop 4/21 and Bar Matchless 4/22. – Leora Mandel

I IM EYE MY for the W/N at W/N W/N April 22

Posted on:

The pairing of Al Creedon (ex-Bleeding Rainbow) & Sean Hamilton (Spacin’, ex-Acid Kicks), which constitutes I IM EYE MY, produces results that experimentally pull from a diverse sonic palate. With a percussive beat-forward foundation, the pairing is geared to create electronic tribal soundscapes with a twisted yet intoxicating futuristic spin, locking you in as you become synched up to rhythms and slipping in those well-placed elements of strange along the way. Tonight at W/N W/N, they will joined by Baltimore’s Sick Lion, whose new Overturned Trash Can Lid LP is due out on April 24 via Gaarden Records, crafting danceably, dreary material, while orchestrating a middle ground where sadness and movement coexist. Detroit transplants Growth Program get things started, dishing out stretches of panoramic noise. W/N W/N, 931 Spring Garden St., 8pm, Free (Photo by Ryan Muir) – Michael Colavita

Bird Dog release new single “The Ocean and the Sea”

Posted on:

“The Ocean and The Sea,” Bird Dog’s lead single on their debut album Hello Latigo, grabs you with its reverent calling, drawing to mind the vocal harmonies of the Avett Brothers (but as if the Avetts were playing arenas these days). The song builds, driving an imaginary tempo-change, tossing in woodblock hits and a bass line as it moves from the beginning’s tranquil birdsong to a chugging guitar bridge that heads, presumably, to the ocean and the sea. Check it out if you’re into sweeping grand folk like the Kings of Leon but still down-to-earth.

You can catch them at 3Clubs in Hollywood on April 22nd or the Hotel Cafe on May 1st. – Brian J.K. Regan
