Red Ribbon’s Euphoric Nu-gaze

Posted on:

Red Ribbon immediately hits with a wave of uncontrollable nostalgia; jarring loose fragments of hazy post-rock idioms that coalesce with the feeling of Codeine rippling over your eardrums. ‘Whatever I can get’ is a melancholic pastiche of the crippling affliction of acquiescence, and while singer Emma Danner yields to what ever she can get, she also warns that “you’re going down with me,” an admonition that is as soothing as it is eerie. Musically, the spindly guitar recalls ‘Misery is a Butterfly’ era Blonde Redhead, while the rhythm draws inspiration from an anemic Land of Talk rapping on the door to your Memoryhouse.

Find yourself overcome with glowing euphoria tonight with Red Ribbon and more at Vermillion. 8PM. Free.

See This: Don Coyote Album Release Show at Turn One 4.4

Posted on:

It took a search for our favorite Don Coyote song of all time (so far) to stumble across this upcoming show on Saturday. "Give it a Rest Coast" should be the final call song in every honky-tonk worth its salt along Broadway, but for now let it be incentive to get yourself down to Turn One this Saturday night. Not only will you get the chance to possibly belt this out with your arm around your neighbor and breath reeking of PBR, but you’ll also be able to pick up their brand new album from this new generation bar band for your very own. Joining the lineup are Kelly and Joey Kneiser of Glossary, as well as The Inglewood Reapers and Birmingham’s Steel City Jug Slammers. The show starts at 9pm and is only $5. Give us a better thing to do on a Saturday night, and, well, we’ll ignore it, because we will be shooting pool at Turn One. -Terra James-Jura

Electro pop band VHS Collection plays Mercy Lounge 4/4, Rockwood Music Hall 5/5

Posted on:

Oh no, your Lord of The Rings DVD selection is too 21st century! VHS Collection is an electro-pop 5-piece who, as you might have guessed, revels in 80’s/90’s nostalgia. Yeah, I know that theme is pretty on trend right now, but these guys get playful and candid with it. What we’ve got here are some smooth male vocals, drum machine, buzzy synths and other keys, tastefully dipping into gameboy-fingers/80’s-smoke-and-lasers-land. You might wind up dancing despite yourself. See them play live at Mercury Lounge 4/4 and Rockwood Music Hall 5/5. – Leora Mandel

Dan Malloy Opening for Fursaxa at First Banana April 2

Posted on:

First off, just want to give a shout-out to Fire Museum Presents for keeping Philly weird in the best way possible. Tonight, you’ll find local experimental ambient guitarist Dan Malloy laying down some sonic waves for all to vibe out to at First Banana. Malloy has been flying under the radar for about a decade now in Philly, while continually building and pushing the boundaries of his work. He’ll be opening the Fire Museum showcase for Fursaxa, a.k.a. Tara Burke, whom you are probably familiar with as a talented longtime contributor to the acid-folk community. They’ll be hosting NYC duo Dora Beu/Tom Carter. First Banana, 2152 E. Dauphin St., 8pm, $7 – $10 sliding scale, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Show Alert: Future Spa at Club Bohemia, 4/25

Posted on:

Upon first listening to Ripped by Future Spa, I was immediately faced with two questions: why the hell did this band wait until now to send this to The Deli (it was released in June of 2014) and why the hell have I not heard these songs before? Surf-punk, lo-fi garage rock–I could list more random sub-genres, but no one would be interested in reading them anyway. These guys have a great sound–wicked loud, wicked fast rock n’ roll. If Raw Power isn’t a collective band favorite of theirs, I would be very surprised. They’ve got a show coming up at Club Bohemia on April 25, which will probably be pretty rad. They’ll be accompanied by Miami Doritos, Greasy Hearts and Dinoczar. You can check out the details here.

Alissa Vox Raw “VOX”

Posted on:

Alissa Vox Raw renders the spirit of soul with a modern experimental edge. She creates a unique style of exploratory Motown-pop songs made entirely from her voice. Alissa Vox Raw is a one woman machine; she is a multi-instrumental looper, who even plays a mean kazoo. Her latest EP “VOX” released this March, is an incredible play of 60’s soul sounds raw. “Where I’m Going, I Don’t Know”, kicks off the EP off with a shuffle in its step with breathy beats behind an empowered vocal. “Don’t Ask Me Why” is smooth with warm tones that get your body swaying to a bebop vocal that loops into sing-a-long harmonies. “Don’t Keep Me Waiting” gets you clapping along with attitude. Alissa’s entire EP is creative, taking styles of the 60’s to new contemporary heights. Catch a glimpse of her EP below. Coming our way soon go to her web page for show listings.

New Track: “The Substitute” (The Who Cover) – Dogs on Acid

Posted on:

Dogs on Acid just shared their cover of The Who’s "Substitute," over at Brooklyn Vegan. The recording is for a compilation entitled Teenagers In Love that will be available digitally on April 14 via Known Pleasure Records. The song was originally released as a single in 1966, and it later also found its way on a compilation album, Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, before being re-issued once again in 1976. Dogs On Acid will be releasing their debut LP this summer via Jade Tree Records, and they’re next show in Philly is currently schedule for Monday, April 27 at Johnny Brenda’s, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they popped up on another local bill before then.
