Julia Shapiro’s Slammin’ Seattle Mixtape

Posted on:

Seattle’s cool-punk sage Julia Shapiro has put together an awesome mix-tape of some of Seattle’s finest pre-post-garage-fi-no-drone-outside-wavers. Listen closely and you might hear some of Chastity Belt’s subliminal influences shine through; from So Pitted’s grimy ‘Cure’ infection, to TacocaT’s fuzzy cat-call sarcasm. Or maybe don’t think about it too much and just kick out these jams and have a real cool Monday.

Tell Me – S

I want To Believe – Lisa Prank

NYC’s WIN WIN releases third single “Air” from upcoming album

Posted on:

Operating like a production collective, WIN WIN started as a duo in Baltimore, where Alex Epton (aka xxx¢hange) and Chris Devlin first met growing up in the early 90s. After their move to NYC in 2006, DJ/video artist Ghostdad (Ryan Sciaino) joined the party. WIN WIN in various combinations has produced music, visuals, or live shows for Prince Rama, Porter Robinson, The Kills, Peaches among others. The trio’s music explores the sonic possibilities given by electronic music within a psychedelic context, constantly pulled between pop and experimental extremes. Free Cake For Every Creature – Eat It Up at PhilaMOCA April 5

Posted on:

Honesty shines at the forefront of Katie Bennett-led Free Cake For Every Creature. Tonight, the band performs at PhilaMOCA, as Bennett unguardedly displays stream of consciousness observations. With endearing episodic narrative tunes that thrive in a minimalistic twee nature, she unlocks that door to her mind, letting listeners see the world through her eyes, while tagging along as passengers in her day-to-day accounts. Free Cake For Every Creature just released their new album Moving Songs via Double Double Whammy earlier this week. Labelmate, former Philly native, and now NYC resident Eskimeaux, a.k.a. Gabrielle Smith, delivers catchy flashes of experimental bedroom pop and with a new LP O.K. due out May 12, a set of fresh material may be on display. Immerse yourself in the sad reflective bedroom punk of quartet Told Slant, which also features Smith. Electro powerpop New Yorkers Crying supply a potently transferable kinetic energy with chiptune accents. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

She Shreds Magazine Philly Showcase w/Swearin’, Amanda X, Mannequin Pussy, Anomie & More at PhilaMOCA April 4

Posted on:
In honor of its seventh issue, the only magazine that’s dedicated to women guitarists and bassists, She Shreds Magazine, has put together an East Coast tour showcase of female shredders. And their stop at PhilaMOCA tonight will be headlined by Allison Crutchfield and the rest of Swearin’, whom have been recording new material. So expect the rock ‘n’ roll tour de force to give a suitable preview. Amanda X will thunder in with their infectious lyrics and fast-paced garage-rock sound that has helped them blow up since the release of Amnesia over the summer. Since arriving on the scene, New York transplants Mannequin Pussy have been obliterating DIY shows with hard-hitting drums, quickened gang vocals, and sick guitar shreds. So they’ll definitely be in their element for this one! The show will also feature the promising new solo side project of Field Mouse’s Rachel Browne, Anomie, Girls Rock Philly incarnation, Jane Doe, and DJ Sad 13 (a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis from Speedy Ortiz). PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Le Fits Record Release Show w/TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb at JB’s April 4

Posted on:

Le Fits are celebrating the arrival of their third LP Fisticuffs (recorded at Hi5 Studio) with an accompanying record release show this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Le Fits sweep one in with their suave demeanor grooves that wash over you like a cold drink after a particularly difficult day. The band develops a fleshed out vibrant pop-rock sound spiked with horns for additional zest. Ben Riesman toes that threshold of pseudo-spoken vocals, smoothly speaking and slyly roping you in as these well-rounded songs grab hold and still maintain an organic loose feel. They are tied neatly together but with plenty of room to breathe. The custom whiskey-barrel growling, foot-stomping folk-blues of TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb will be headlining on this night, returning home after a series of southern dates that included a run at SXSW. Dan Bruskewicz’s authoritative snarly narratives cut a path through the backwoods to a modernized juke joint. The soulful folk, brother-sister-led Bernhardt Family Band kicks off the festivities. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
