Only a powerful musical chemistry can explain how two musicians separated by an ocean can decide to form a band. Copenhagen-based Anna Lidell and NYC’s Katy Gunn formed Teenage Love when they met in NYC during Anna’s first trip to the US. The two preview singles from their upcoming debut EP combine quirky vocal harmonies, violin melodies and electronic elements in a way vaguely reminiscent of Dirty Projectors, with a slightly less jazzy/experimental inclination. Check out "Gold," streaming below, and the more recent Teenage Fanclub cover of "Sia – Chandelier."
The Deli NYC’s Record of the Month: Dolly Spartans – self titled EP
I think we can all agree about the fact that age is very important in rock’n’roll; we might not like that (we don’t) but we can agree about it, right? Therefore, a good rock song is bound to get some added value when it’s written and performed by four musicians in their (not so late) teens. And then, if you also realize that the band has a solid six track debut EP with no fillers under their belt, things start to get really interesting: records without fillers are rare at any age… The band in question is NYC’s Dolly Spartans; their self titled debut fluctuates between pop punk exuberance (‘We’ll say that for now,’ streaming below, and ‘ ‘Don’t You Know‘) and more tamed melodic moments reminiscent of a dirtier Vampire Weekend (‘Who Are You,’) or even of sacred monsters like The Beatles and their beloved disciples XTC (‘Something on my Mind‘). The band’s sound features the right amount of rawness (think early Pixies), which gets tamed at least in part by songwriter and lead singer’s Michael Eliran tenor, that sounds way more mature than his years. The range of the six tracks, the actual songwriting, and the maturity of the arrangements is truly impressive for such a young band, and make this is one of the most consistently fun NYC made record we heard in a while. Hopefully these guys’ sound won’t get too polished too soon!

Cyberbully Mom Club Opening for SALES at JB’s April 7
Cyberbully Mom Club addresses the internal speculation and insecurity that is part of the universal struggle of daily growth. That common thread of experience sews itself into one’s mind, so that these personal running-diary, bedroom-pop tunes feel wall-less. They simply tap into a fundamental condition, often capturing momentary laments in cathartic snapshot songs. Local singer-songwriter Abi Reimold opens, finding a sweet spot between peaceful wandering and aggression. Using emotionally charged, clean vocals and pairing them with raw guitar, she creates an intimate intensity that surrounds like a storm overhead. The Orlando duo of SALES headlines tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, offering soothing catchy electro-pop-rock tunes that smoothly blend Lauren Morgan’s calming vocals with a steady easy beat. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

LNS Crew Brings the Spring Heat to Austin
If you were looking for the mysterious proverbial “fire” that supposedly resides in so many hip-hop mixtapes, you might think the shit is just myth. Most mixtapes are…well, they wouldn’t help much on a cold day, let’s say that. Not so with local LNS Crew’s new mixtape, which packs enough heat to stop a decent sized blizzard. LNS Mixtape Vol. 2 is the goods from three of Austin’s (okay, Denver now, in the case of Cory Kendrix) hip-hop veterans, a series of 21 tracks which feature a rotating cast of Kendrix, Kydd Jones and Tank Washington showing off their undeniable skills at producing and rapping. It’s just April, but this release is assuredly going to sit near if not at the top of the list of ATX hip-hop releases from 2015 when December rolls into January, and that’s why we’ve nominated LNS Crew for our Artist of the Month poll. Music below, and get yer votin’ finger a good workout to the right y’all.
Callaghan to Release “A History of Now” 4.7
UK-cum-Southern belle Callaghan is preparing to release her second full-length album, "A History of Now" tomorrow, April 7th. Preceding this release is this sweet video for "Crazy, Beautiful Life" It’s a lighthearted song, and the video is a little twee in that it involves singing "La la la la la" in front of a green screen of rolling clouds, but it goes down so well that is is sure to please a multitude of palates. Proceeding her album and contrasting with the spun-sugar of the single is a hardcore, breakneck 41-date (and counting) tour of living rooms across the nation. Check out the full tour and learn more about Callaghan at www.callaghansongs.com.
Buzz alert: NYC electro soul artist Elliot Moss plays Baby’s All Right on 04.29
It’s rare to find music that’s incredibly intense and creative at once, maybe because musicians interested in intensity tend to stick with traditional genres, while those attracted by originality often settle for "quirky fun," or are too cerebral to let things get emotional. But 21 year old NYC songwriter Elliot Moss is getting a lot of buzz with self-produced songs that are both moody and sonically interesting. His breakout single "Slip," with its bare edginess and vocoded vocals, almost comes across as a soulful, updated version of Laurie Anderson’s "O Superman," while other preview singles from the artist’s upcoming album (due later in the year) showcase busier programmed landscapes, and a soul singer with seriously sulky inclinations. Check out "Best Light" below, and don’t miss Elliot’s upcoming show at Baby’s All Right on 04.29.
