Weekend Warrior, April 10 – 12

Posted on:
When it comes to DIY events in Philly, few (if any) can compare to Pilam’s Human BBQ. Whether it’s catching killer bands like Screaming Females before the rest of the world has caught on to them, having The Dead Milkmen pop up to perform an unannounced set, or dashing down its back steps from the roof to escape a raid by the authorities, it’s always an experience to remember. This Saturday starting at noon, the grill will be all fired up, and the amps will be cranked for 21 acts that will include local talent like Slow Animal, DRGN King, Ghost Gum, Mischief Brew, Kississippi, and much, much more. You can check out the complete schedule HERE, and take note of the time allotted for a “surprise set.” Pilam, 3914 Spruce St., 12pm – 12am, $15, All Ages – Alexis V.

Psychic Teens Opening for Nervosas at Great Indoors April 10

Posted on:

A healthy supply of menace buzzes through you while listening to Psychic Teens, demonstrating a ravenous street-lurking mode that escalates the suspense around every poorly lit street corner while conjuring up images of gloomy dungeons in classic horror flicks. Those ominous tones of heart rattling bass/drum and eerie slivers of guitar illustrate a haunting setting in which Larry Ragone’s commanding baritone serves as a guide. The dance inducing synth-driven propulsions of Decade and the sprinting punk rock of Dark Thoughts help to set the stage at the Great Indoors for the fully-loaded post-punk of Columbus, Ohio’s Nervosas, whose unrelenting clean bursts of intertwined instrumentations tie you in. Great Indoors, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Noisy trio ADVAETA unveils single “Church Cult” from upcoming LP

Posted on:

As you can gather from their streaming single, NYC noise rock trio Advaeta isn’t too concerned with pleasing the average music lover, choosing to cater to the faithfuls of the rock genre genre that takes tension and dissonance to its extreme. The band, active for more than 5 years in the NYC underground, will be releasing their new album "Death And The Internet" on local label Fire Talk at the end of the month. The unveiled three singles from it, which seem to add a dreamy vocal element to their droney and abrasive wall of guitars: "Angelfish," streaming below, "Hazel Blue Eyes," and "Church Cult," recently premiered on Stereogum.

Howard’s ‘Money Can’t Buy’ single gets 2 million plays on Spotify

Posted on:

We have to say, we are pretty friggin’ proud of Brooklyn via New England electro folk (or something) quartet Howard. When we first featured them in this blog in November 2014 we were struck right away by their sound and songwriting, which effortlessly blended elements as disparate as jungle and Gregorian chants. A few weeks later they went on to top the Psych/Avant Indie submissions for our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists. A few days before, they had dropped a new single entitled "Money Can’t Buy," which since then has gathered a stunning TWO MILLION plays on Spotify. The band recently playd SXSW and landed a deal with a major touring agency, so we are sure they are going to have a fun rest of 2015. Congrats guys!

New Music Video: “Disposer” – Cousin Brian

Posted on:

While Cousin Brian work on finding a record label to release their upcoming album Closer to Dog, the band has a new music video to keep us entertained. Check out the rad blank & white animation that was created by the mind of the band’s guitarist Elliott Beck! It’s for the track "Disposer," which is off the group’s full-length First. Enjoy! Alex Napping, But Don’t Sleep on Their New Single

Posted on:

In the days just leadin’ up to South By this year, Alex Napping, that band with a sound as cute as its name, gave the internet a new single called "Trembles Part I," which is already making a bit of a stir. In the vein of last year’s This Is Not a Bedroom, which we suggested you get into back in October, "Trembles Part I" is another jubilant nod to the glory days of jangly, sunshine-set 90s indiepop. It starts all Pavement-esque guitar and crashing cymbals, and then bounces into something akin to a much less difficult Deerhoofish (that word right there, that was fun to type) experimental, bright and exciting guitar pop sound. This is just a very well balanced song, from band namesake Alex Cohen’s lovely light, pretention-less voice to the interest-grabbing tempo changes to the on-spot instrumentation, and it shows just how true it is that Alex Napping is one of Austin’s top indiepop bands to watch in 2015. Get on into it.

NYC alt rockers Highly Suspects go to Bonnaroo – to play!

Posted on:

NYC Alt Rock trio Highly Suspect – ANOTHER band that was listed in our recent Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artist – just got the news that they were selected to play Bonnaroo. The band’s bluesy single "Lydia" (we blogged about it recently here) was released in early 2015 and immediately resonated online with hundred of thousand people around the globe, which obviously helped them land a spot in the line up of the upcoming Tennessee hosted festival. Check out their other single "Lost" from their debut EP.

Big Lonely 4/11 @ the Rivoli

Posted on:

Big Lonely is Burlington, Ontario’s up and coming indie rock band. These guys are breaking hearts and moving feet with their infectious array of emotion and sound demonstrated on their most recent release, Close your eyes, Keep Talking. Pairing up the buttery lead vocals with catchy chorus’ seems to be the winning combination. Don’t be mistaken, there’s no shortage of angst or aggression throughout the album. The boys of Big Lonely know how to keep things intriguing and refreshing – in the over-populated indie rock scene. Go take a listen! Better yet, make sure to head out and sing along to their contagious tunes Saturday 4/11 @ the Rivoli.-Courtney Chalapenko

Sly Moth releases self titled album and it might brighten your day

Posted on:

Must say I didn’t expect to find one of my 2015 summer jams so fast but New York quartet Sly Moth (one of The Deli’s Best NYC Emerging Artists of 2014) is like an early (or late) Santa. Their new self-titled record features playful surf/indie-rock guitar and bass, parading percussive sections, and talk of dizziness, sunshine, and sticky jealousy. The Joy Formidable and Waxahatchee come to mind. These songs are catchy and gladly avoid easy traps like getting stuck in stagnancy or mind numbing choruses. Dani Newman’s vocals fit into dreamy grooves and crackle effortlessly here and there like a cinema actress laughing into a telephone. Did you know the band started forming with a craigslist ad? One of those love stories. – Leora Mandel

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Twiin

Posted on:

Twiin is made up of (non-twin) sister-brother combo, Lauren and Jon Tsipori, Andy Silverman, and Dan Lipshutz. The garage-punk four-piece currently only has one bawdy single available for streaming and download, but hopefully the prizes that they won from our Featured Artist(s) Poll will change all that. Until then, learn a bit more about Twiin from our interview HERE. (Photo by Holli Stephens)
