TEENANGER @ Steamwhistle Brewing Co.

Posted on:

I was watching an intense hockey game when I threw on Teenanger‘s latest record EP LP. It opens up with "Fly on the Wall" which fit the frantic mood of the hockey game perfectly. A throwback to punk rock of the 70s and 80s it is a reminder that rock n’ roll is all about the energy. I had to skip to the last track on the album because it had such a sweet name… "Hot Rods At The Loser Convention." It had a groovier beat to it and I don’t think they’re very impressed with whoever inspired the track. Teenanger has honed their craft since 2010 and they’ll be taking their show across the pond next month. You have the opportunity to party down with them on Friday April 17th @ the Steamwhistle Brewing Company. Crush beers and bang your head like a teenager with Teenanger on Friday.- Kris “Big City” Gies

Radio Free Universe @ This Ain’t Hollywood

Radio Free Universe struck gold at the Horseshoe Tavern Monday night, putting on a fierce and bold rock n’ roll showcase performance. Stopping you in your tracks with a wickedly large vocal by front man, George Panagopoulos; his voice is layered and carried by pure rock n’ roll sounds. RFU showcased their pre-release single “American Gun” , it’s a huge track that rushes you like a speeding train. It opens with familiar throbbing drum beats that get your boots stompin’, then rolls sweetly into an unforgettable vocal that rips hard to wailing guitars. Stay tuned this Sept for RFU’s EP release of Casa Del Diablo. But you don’t have to wait too long to see them again, Radio Free Universe is playing Friday 4/17 @ This Ain’t Hollywood.

Show Review: Koa at Exit/In on Friday, 4.10

Posted on:

Pardon the cliche, but it’s fitting: Koa blew the roof off Exit In Friday night.

In case you thought pop music achieved total music monopoly, these Belmont music buffs have something to say. Trading off sax, nord, and guitar solos throughout upbeat barn-burners, hell even the sound booth was head-bobbing.

Jam band would be accurate, think O.A.R and Dave Matthews. But then forget I said that. Koa is no wannabe, and moreover dodges the genre’s biggest pitfall: bad songwriting. No amount of noodling creates strong lyric and arrangement. Koa puts a checkmark by it, then has you sing along.

These seven guys need to graduate, drop out, ask pops for money, whatever. It’s one thing for skilled musicians to collaborate. It’s another to make it work. And yet another to make it a live success. The first two are clear. The 300 in attendance Friday know the third is, too.

Ben Neumann; Event hosted by Cause A Scene at the Exit In 4/10/15.

NYC rapper Billy Woods releases “Today, I Wrote Nothing” + plays Baby’s All Right on 04/19

Posted on:

Bushwick’s reclusive Billy Woods has once again tossed out one of his cryptic introspective message-in-a-bottle albums. Following 2013’s highly-praised Dour Candy produced by indie-rap super producer Blockhead, it maintains Billy’s acerbic assessment of life and struggle. In contrast to his highly political work in side project Armand Hammer, this album feels more like a stack of random diary pages ripped out and read before being doused in kerosene and ignited. But with track names like “Zulu Tolstoy” and “U-boats” and lines like “That great escape – tree of knowledge, bagged and sold by the eighth – it only took one snake,” it’s not without its social commentaries. It moves quickly with few tracks even reaching the three-minute mark, but, knowing Billy, this is probably just a clandestine jab at audiences’ diminishing attention spans. For an artist as prolific as Woods, one can only wonder what would happen on the day he truly “wrote nothing.” Billy will be performing alongside Open Mike Eagle and The Karma Kids at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on Sunday 4/19. – BrokeMc

New Video: Out Of Town Films Pop-up Show – The Districts

Posted on:

The Districts recently performed an intimate pop-up show at Out Of Town Films headquarters to roughly 50 onlookers. This video captures the 3 songs performed as part of full set that evening which included “Hounds,” “Heavy Begs,” and “Bold” – all found on A Flourish and a Spoil. The band, which is currently in the midst of a European tour, consistently pushes the threshold between unveiled, up-close honesty and hard-driving rockers, working that seesaw game of highs and lows.

Deli Video Premiere: Get “Hot & Heavy” with Molasses Jones’ New Video

Posted on:

Boston-area blues rockers Molasses Jones have released a new video into the vastness of the Internet and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll watch it, listen to it, and tell all your friends about it. Shot in-studio at Ugly Duck Recording Studios in Allston during the recording of their new single, “Hot & Heavy”, the production quality of both the song and video are extremely well-done. Carried by a ridiculously catchy main riff and strong, smooth vocals from lead singer John Zapato, this song is the perfect soundtrack for a warm-weather BBQ, lounging in your backyard, or cruisin’ down the highway to nowhere in particular.

NYC duo rooted in the unconventional: Sonnymoons

Posted on:

Brooklyn via Boston duo Sonnymoon is a band criminally under-covered by many "cutting edge" music blogs – we wonder why. They just released their third album "The Courage of Present Times," follow up to their self-titled 2012 sophomore, which became a cult record for the rather small layer of music fans interested in that paradoxical genre known as "experimental pop." Since producer Dane Orr likes to keep hist mostly electronic arrangement at a minimum that borders on the "barely there," at least 75% of what happens in Sonnymoon’s music is centered around Anna Wise’s vocal experimentations, which constantly fluctuate between unpredictable improvisations and repeated melodic hooks, therefore creating a new interesting incarnation of pop’s proverbial "tension and release" dynamic. LA transplants Girlpool just released the title track to their forthcoming Wichita Recordings LP Before The World Was Big, due out June 2. With tongue-twisting interlaced vocals recalling nostalgic lyrics compounded by their strolling bass-guitar lines, the song becomes almost immediately familiar. Girlpool will be heading out on tour with labelmate Waxahatchee later this month. (Photo by Alice Baxley)

I, Us & We releases debut EP Mono

Posted on:

Instead of lingering on one sound, I, Us, & We explore different facets of their jeweled dream pop. “Lanterns,” with its cavernous chorus and shuffling beat, kicks off the band’s debut EP Mono, but it also isn’t a perfect predictor for what comes next. The ringing synths in “Sunday” practically sound cheery by comparison, and album highlight “Alive” draws you in with a moody vibe similar to “Lanterns,” but with a pleading chorus that, even without pining for you in particular, might convince you to sing along.
