The Two Koreas @ Magpie

Posted on:

The Two Koreas call themselves glacial-garage. I call them pure rips! Their latest EP "LP Winner" kicks off with a straight rockin’ title track. You could rock the QEW from Hamilton to Toronto in about 15 minutes with this EP on. You could actually go straight through the Gardiner nonsense and not get caught. The organ that comes in hot near the end of the title track adds a whole different level to an already mind spinning track. The rest of the EP keeps the blood flowing. They’re at the Magpie Taproom on Friday. If you can handle some in your face rock n’ roll I suggest you go see what The Two Koreas are all about. –Kris “Big City” Gies

Breathtaker Actually Did Give Me a Shock

Posted on:

It’s been a while since a song happily shocked me with a good screaming section, but local band Breathtaker just did it. This group, of which I had been previously ignorant, submitted their music to us this week, and I put on their newest album Revelations without knowing what to expect. The submission was listed as Indie, the album art suggested maybe something a little avant-garde; only the name seemed a bit more dramatic than most indie groups, but even that, I thought, I could see from some indie groups.

Partway through opener track “Kingsbury,” when I was thinking Breathtaker might be going for a kind-of dreary, melodic indie with a post-rock bent kinda thing (which I was digging, by the way), a wild dissonant note hit and the screaming began . It was actually a little hair-raising in a literal way, after me not expecting it. And that’s because it was good screaming, earned and welcome and well-done, exceptionally balanced against the instrumentation and used as one ingredient in the wider paradigm of a well-structured piece of music. I liked it, and the rest of the 11 track album was thought out with equal attention and care if not quite as surprising as that initial screaming shock.

I wouldn’t dream to genre a band differently than they do themselves, but indie here more represents the “independent musicians” definition than it does a sound for Breathtaker, at least in relation to what “indie” bands in Austin typically sound like. If, however, I were to try and describe Breathtaker to one of my high school friends from Amarillo who were into the surprisingly extensive screaming music scene there in the mid 2000s, I’d say that they’re a band that’s on the artsier side of what some people call hardcore, and which some just call emo. That last term is culturally deficient to describe these guys – it is far too broad and I really doubt they use it to refer to themselves at any point – but it does the trick in 2015 to get you in the right mind of what to expect from Breathtaker. If you are or ever were the kind of person who thought that screaming rock music had something awesome to offer (like we do), Breathtaker is a new entry in that particular segment of Music with Screaming. That people keep making interesting things happen with music like this proves that it’s a segment that is a powerful space where quality experimentation can occur, and out of which some damn good tracks, like "Kingsbury," can come. Congratulations to Mos. Bros. Our New Artist of the Month!

Posted on:

Congratulations to the Mos. Bros. for winning our latest Artist of the Month poll! We’re hoping that this was a clean match, and that no one took any advice on how to scam the system from a certain recently-run (and highly entertaining) piece.

We’re not at all surprised that the Mos. Bros. won this contest. The North Carolina-born twin brothers, Will and Bobby, build their brand of indie rock on a foundation of solid songwriting with an alt-rock bent. The brothers took a step back after being flattened by the mainstream music wringer, and refocused their energy into playing songs more authentic to themselves. The pair just put out an EP this march, entitled "Three," and are preparing for a live, streaming performance of material off their upcoming full-length on May 5th (more details here.) Keep up with the siblings and their fierce crusade of independence at www.mosbrosmusic.com.

Miya releases new single “Talking With Strangers”

Posted on:

“How did I miss this lesson when I was young?” The most beautiful string of words put together in Miya Folick’s new single, "Talking With Strangers." Of course, that is only my personal opinion, though the lyrics throughout the whole song end up wrapping you up in personal memories and elastic emotions. Miya, a new and upcoming artist in the Los Angeles area, has started a musical journey of relaxing vibes and spirituality that consumes your body into an all-natural mood setter. Miya’s voice in "Talking With Strangers" defines a time in your life when you need help to push through. Her lyrics are uplifting while the piano, bass and drums create a stress free environment that involves deep breathing and focus. At 25 years old, Miya has truly found a calling in the music industry. Her grunge and folk style is a refreshing quality of music that demands to be heard and also felt. – Kayla Hay

Read about Kuroma’s creative process + see them live at LPR on 04.23

Posted on:

Started by former Whigs and current MGMT guitarist Hank Sullivant in 2008, NYC Indie pop band Kuroma has gone through various inceptions before finally settling on their current one, the line-up rounded out by James Richardson and Will Berman of MGMT and Simon O’Connor of Amazing Baby. Considering the incredible background of all musicians involved in this project (who also work as producers), we thought it would be interesting to know a thing or two about their favorite gear and how they tackle the creative and recording processes. We asked Hank a few questions in this regard here.

If you dig the band, you shouldn’t miss their upcoming show at Les Poisson Rouge on April 23.

Viktor Longo (of Viking) premiers music video on 5.30 and plays Pete’s Candy’s Store on 05.28

Posted on:

Antifolk favorite/Sidewalk Café regular Viktor Longo (another artist to make our latest Best of NYC Emerging Artists list) usually records sardonic pop songs under the name Viking, but this year he has begun releasing what he describes as sci-fi glam rock under his own name. Longo switches between cooing "O Holy Night" like a small, bright bird and crackling and cawing out “I want to kill the feeling.” Some songs rely on minimal guitar grooves or pitter-patters on piano while others travel by way of synths, distortion, and bold beats. You can celebrate the premier of his music video "The Feeling" at Emerson House on May 30th and catch him at Pete’s Candy’s Store on May 28th. – Leora Mandel

A Deli NYC premiere: Fancy Colors’ video for “History of Civilization”

Posted on:

This past October Fancy Colors, a band featuring Zac Colwell (Chappo, Big Data) & Dave Heilman (Sondre Lerche, Regina Specktor) treated us to a beautiful live performance at our CMJ 2014 Pop Stage at Spike Hill. We are now happy to premiere their new video for single "History of Civilization." Here’s a note they sent us about how it came to life: "This time last year, we found ourselves in Panama City to play "Festival Abierto" with our friends Naked Hearts.  After the show, Dave stuck around for a few weeks to explore different regions of the country and Zac encouraged him to bring a video camera along to shoot some footage for a music video.  The images span a few days spent traveling to, and living on, the San Blas Islands along the Caribbean coast of Panama — a paradisiacal archipelago and home to the Kuna Tribe."
