The Lifts @ The Cameron House

Posted on:

The Lifts are full throttle rock n’ roll fusion. Their music contains elements of progressive rock, metal and blues; a strong combination of muscle, imagination and weight. Their self-titled EP has what it takes, hitting us hard, endowing us with wit and an artistic certainty. Showing off their biceps, you are instantly satisfied. “What’s Her Face” is pure rock n’ roll with an ambitious sound. “The Sky is Peeling” sinks its teeth into you with grunge grit, heavy guitars and a luscious delayed vocal. “Darling” beats a drum with a heavy bellowing bluesy backbone and a vocal that “doesn’t let us down”. The last track on the EP “Mescal Blues” knocks on your heart with an unforgettable melody, as if you have known it forever; pulling its weight of heavy combinations of dark and light sounds. Don’t miss The Lifts this Friday March 20th @ The Cameron House.

Renata Zeiguer plays Rough Trade 3/20 with project Cantina, reveals news is on its way this spring

Posted on:

Renata Zeiguer is a talented and busy musician working with Deli favorites such as Landlady, Vensaire, and her own project Cantina. She promises news this spring and will begin the season with a show March 20th at Rough Trade. Her ghostly “Horizons EP” was our featured record of the month in August of last year and we’ve been keeping an ear out since! As the review points out, yes, Cantina is the Italian word for cellar, but a quick Google search will also reveal a world of Star Wars references and videos of cute aliens jazzing out. Is Renata a wine enthusiast or secret Princess Leia cosplayer? Regardless, her music is wildflowers growing tall and fast, decorated with percussive rattles, fiddles, bird sounds, harmonies, and passages for light to travel through. – Leora Mandel

Realms, “Monolith”

Posted on:

Our post on BASECAMP earlier this week must have whet our ears for moody, slightly off-kilter soundscapes, because they were totally primed when we listened to “Monolith” by Realms. There’s a similar bass-heavy tension to the album, and tracks like “Progress” have kindred slow, unnerving builds that resonate like a frozen lake cracking underfoot. Realms is a trio consisting of Josh Pantana, David Gross and Graham Blecher, who built their startling chemistry over five years of acting as studio band for several Nashville acts (including Andrew Bell and Neulore.) “Monolith” is the first stand-alone effort as Realms, recorded over the course of a year in their home studio and officially released March 10th. Check out opening track "Dinosaurs" to see if it hits you in a sweet spot. If you’re a fan of Sigur Ros, Radiohead, or strikingly pretty atmospheric experimentation, then this album is worth checking out. –Terra James-Jura

New Track: “Somethin’ Wicked (Gothic Moment)” – A Sunny Day in Glasgow

Posted on:

Bi-continental outfit A Sunny Day in Glasgow quietly released a new single yesterday entitled "Somethin’ Wicked (Gothic Moment)." Angelic female vocals waft in as a guitar riff lays down an infectious groove before airy synths take you away to another time, another place. The soundscape eventually gives way to shimmering yet abrasive electronics that dissolve into the ether. (Photo by Zoe Jet Elis)

Deli Sneak Peak: Squirrel Flower

Posted on:
Singer-Songwriter Ella Williams, under the moniker Squirrel Flower, is releasing a new album Early Winter Songs for Middle America this Saturday 3/21. She was kind enough to give us a little sneak peak of the album, filled with tastefully short and dreamy songs. Early Winter Songs is a clear and deliberate portrait of Williams’ time in Iowa while attending Grinnell College, before returning to Massachusetts. It sounds damn cold there, I’ll just leave it at that. Mostly a solo electric guitar and her voice, Williams mixes in sparse field recordings that allude to the stark setting that inspired these songs. Lyrically, her style is poigniantly honest and authentic, never cluttering the meaning with strained analogies, just honest observations. It’s an impressive debut, and we’re thrilled that she’s back around Boston. Check out the haunting mostly a’capella track “I Won’t Walk Inside,”  it vividly illustrates the setting that inspired these songs.  You can also stream the charming tune "What Was That," or download the album here after 3/21.  – Paul Jordan Talbot

Red Bull Sound Select w/Pissed Jeans, Amanda X, Cheerbleeders & More at Underground Arts March 19

Posted on:

Red Bull Sound Select is presenting this evening’s show, curated by Jump Philly, at Underground Arts, making it feel like this weekend has started a day early. The unforgiving sledgehammer of sound that is Pissed Jeans headline. The four-piece consistently brings a menacing attack of hardcore noise. That adrenaline oozing with an unrelenting sinister style can divide and conquer any room. It’s that commanding sense of heavy instrumental artillery that involuntarily allows you to submit, accepting that downhill smack of backend, guitar that sears and stabs, and that primal order of vocals. The garage-pop trio of Amanda X cleanly enters your head as their lyrically contagious songs are surrounded by a united surge of refined grit. The dark buzzing, bass-popping punk of The Abandos and Cheerbleeders‘ speed-cruising, fuzzy fun set the groundwork for a barrage of music that you’ll want to go into battle with. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., $10 ($3 with RSVP), 8pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Integrity Reeves drops EP, sings for Billie Holiday’s 100th.

Posted on:

Integrity Reeves brings an invigorating new voice to both the local and national jazz scene. Her EP Stairway To The Stars is described as "modern vintage," inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Feist, and The Bird and the Bee, and presents interpretations from classic Joao Gilberto bossa nova to The Cardigan’s "Lovefool." Indeed, Integriti’s light, bright, twee voice is reminiscent of contemporary indie-pop vocal tones, but she sings in a fiercely classical style. The combination is both technically impressive and stylistically refreshing, and is sure to appeal to both fans of classic jazz and neophytes eager to hear what a fresh young voice can do. Delightful through and through.
You can grab a copy of her EP on itunes, and catch her live at the Kennedy Center’s Millenium Stage on April 7th as part of the Center’s tribute to Billie Holiday in honor of her centennial. –Natan Press

Boston Calling Continues to Support Local and National Artists with Blank Canvas Contest

Posted on:

Boston Calling’s Blank Canvas generated so much interest and amazing artwork during its debut last fall that festival organizers are launching another contest this May. Artists throughout the US are welcome to submit work that will be displayed as a mural at this spring’s festival (May 22-24). According to a recent press release, the choice to bring back the contest was obvious. "[W]e were thrilled with the response we received [last year] from artists all over the country. Their creativity very much enhanced the visual appeal of the festival. We are excited to bring Blank Canvas back this May and further incorporate art into the festival layout,” says Brian Appel, co-founder of Boston Calling.  As the festival continues to grow in size, scope and notoriety, the increased focus on multiple artforms helps to strength the already dynamic event.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 10. For more information on the contest rules, click here.

Beams @ The Gladstone

Posted on:

Beams, a cohesively mixed, indie folk-rock sextet from Toronto have caught our ear holes, with their song Black Shadow. A brilliantly mournful story sang by the most delightful and complementary mix of singers that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to in a long while. The vocal lends a little bit of an unnerving feeling, which is fitting to the song (and even more-so to the video!). Although, the vocals are quite alluring, credit is due to the accompaniment as the arrangement is just as wonderful, simple drums, banjo and electric guitar keep the song flowing and the soothing vocal harmonies shining, while one of my favourite parts is just the cherry on top – vibraphone! If you get the chance, check out their video for Black Shadow- the story behind the concept makes it all the more interesting. These beauties are playing 03/20 @ The Gladstone let their brilliant harmonies ease you into the weekend.-Courtney Chalapenko
