Bear Lincoln Zip Zilch Nada and Heart Sweats Play El Rio – 3/12

Posted on:

Pass Go and Counter Culture Management are putting on a showcase featuring three cool local bands at El Rio this week! If you’re into somewhat odd and invigorating indie alternative rock music, you should go to this show. Bear Lincoln will headline the night and Bay Area based Zip Zilch Nada will support the line up along with the titillatingly experimental electro rock band, Heart Sweats. It all goes down on Thursday, March 12th!

This is another uber local line up and these bands need your support to have a successful show. Check out the music and if it’s your cup of tea, roll down to El Rio and show your face!

Jessie Baylin Releases Video for “Creepers (Young Love)”

Posted on:

We’re in love with this dark new video from Jessie Baylin. "Creepers (Young Love)" is a deliciously heavy, meaty track from her Richard Swift-produced fourth album "Dark Places," due out April 7th. It’s a refreshing departure from the typically sweet pop-by-way-of-France-circa-1960 that the chanteuse is known for. Creepers is right. We can almost smell the cigarettes and unwashed bedsheets when we watch this, and, even though we want to wash our hands after a view, we kind of like it. We’re hoping the rest of the album has the same sort of unsettling carnality as this track.

Jessie Baylin will be at Grimey’s on April 7th for an album release in-store performance, followed by a show at 3rd and Lindsley on April 11th. Tickets are available HERE. -Terra James-Jura

Super Thief

Posted on:

Super Thief is one of the four artists up for our most recent edition of The Deli Austin’s Artist of the Month Poll, and they are without question the loudest, grittiest band in consideration this go around. They also just put out a 7 song eponymous EP in January that’s not just good and heavy as fuck, it’s also smart, and from the first thudding, gut-shaking bass line on intro track "On the Internet," you know you’re not about to hear another Austin indie-pop or psych-rock group. No, this is music that remembers 80s hardcore and no wave, music that scratches that guttural screaming and crunching guitar itch and which does so while speaking about the modern condition without pretension. There’s not a boring spot on this whole EP, and it’s been on heavy rotation in the Austin Deli offices since we came across it. That’s partly because Super Thief’s use of chaos and dissonance and confusion turned into tight, complex songs is refreshing as fuck to hear coming out of Austin, where bands so often focus on the pretty and the peaceful. Sometimes you just want to thrash and wreck shit and work out some fucking frustration about this weird goddamn world, and Super Thief gives the listener the chance to do just that for a bit. Listen to standout track "Needle Fix" below, the rest of the EP here and vote to the right if Super Thief is hitting your shit-wrecking nerve nice and good, like it is ours.

vōx releases new single, teases EP

Posted on:

The artful soundscapes of vōx, the brainchild of Sarah Winters, put her in a new league of songwriters stretching the limits of pop conventions. Her second single, "Money", is a thoughtful, confident stride forward that features a frantic undercurrent of layered textures lurking behind her vibrant, weathered vocals.

"Money" will be featured on her up-and-coming EP "Put The Poison In Me", which is due out later this Spring.

Brooklyn’s Highly Suspect take their bluesy alt rock to SXSW

Posted on:

In the 90’s, Seattle produced two REALLY bluesy bands that went on to become two of the most popular acts from the grunge wave: Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. In today’s Brooklyn-centered rediscovery of that west coast sound, we haven’t heard a lot of bluesy overtones – until Highly Suspect came on our radar. This young group (who made our latest list of Best Emerging NYC Bands) has the chops to pull off this kind of heavyness through a punchy interplay between their tight power trio set up and Johnny Stevens’ powerful but expressive lead vocals. Their latest single "Lydia" (streaming) is getting a lot of attention, the band is going to bring it live to the Austin crowds at next week’s SXSW Festival.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Alt Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

From the NYC submissions: Neutral Tones

Posted on:

Neutral Tones is the brainchild of Queens’ N. David Pastor, who confesses in his Bandcamp description: "I’m a writer and a musician. I should probably focus on one or the other…" – to which we reply: "but why?" Songwriting is the art that combines these two talents, and David shows promise in both departments, as you can hear from his three song debut EP, filled with intimate lyrics and interesting textures and arrangements. Neutral Tones recently performed at a NYC Sofar Sound event.

This artist submitted music for coverage here.
