The Bright Smoke premieres single “Exit Door” + releases “Terrible Towns” LP at Mercury on 04.17

Posted on:

"Terrible Towns," the second LP from NYC dark side duo, The Bright Smoke, promises a furtherance away from the conventional pop sounds, and an instillation of despondent intrigue that creates, like the band’s name, a positive vibe with a twang of the gloomy. The second single, entitled “Exit Door” (streaming) is a vocally driven pop tune of eerier familiarity, but with effectual harmonizing and distant guitar tones that creep up and down the skin. Singer Mia Wilson’s voice is a penetrating force that contrasts with the hazy mixture of reverbed guitars and the time-bomb tack of drums, but works together to command your attention and send chills down your spine. "Terrible Towns" is out this April, with the record release party scheduled for April 17th at the Mercury Lounge. – JP Basileo

Apojii

Posted on:

Time to get familiar with another entry in our Austin Deli Artist of the Month poll. Next up, Apojii, and Austin-by-way-of-San-Antonio rapper who has been goin’ strong in the scene for some time now. Apojii is a stylistic gymnast, with a sound that tips its hat to mainstream party hip-hop but which is much more creative and conscious in his overall approach to music production and to rapping. Just look at his mission statement on his Soundcloud, which says he’s making these tracks "to bring people to the awareness of themselves," or the lyrics on tracks like our featured joint that say, "Everything’s got to be sold/Whether it’s god or whether it’s gold." That’s not stuff you’d hear from Top 40 tracks too often, yet Apojii’s work still always stays within that "fun to listen to" realm that mainstream shit typically makes its sole aim. That merger of a pop sound that draws you in (and gets the head bobbin’ to the rhythm) with a sharp mind that knows its hip-hop, its pop culture and itself is Apojii’s strength. And his continued and recent tracks as a solo producer/rapper double threat as well as his excellent featured work with San Antonio artist Tommie Wong are what got Apojii nominated for this month’s Austin Deli Artist of the Month. Music below, vote to the right y’all.

Video Premiere: Hidden in the Sun – San Francisco Blues

Posted on:

The San Francisco based folk band, Hidden in the Sun has recently experienced a jolt of success. Reeling from their widespread exposure from NPR Music, the band has recorded and released a music video for their single, San Francisco Blues from their full length debut album, Seven Seasons. The video was locally shot at the cozy, underground acoustic music venue Viracocha and gives you a chance to watch this ensemble of musicians give a great performance on the night of their album release show.

The blending of beautiful vocals, the song’s smooth blues folk instrumental vibe and the excitement of the audience makes you feel like you’re in the room while watching this video. Get a taste of this stellar live performance and keep your eyes on this local musical outfit for their future endeavors.

New Track: “Baby Haim” – Cold Fronts

Posted on:

Cold Fronts‘ Craig Almquist lays it on the line, and declares his love for Alana Haim, a.k.a. @babyhaim on social media, the youngest of the sister group HAIM, in the band’s latest single "Baby Haim." There is also a lyric video coming in just case there is any confusion about these words. Hopefully he’ll find a pop-rock love connection. Cold Fronts will be doing a run of shows with The Cribs before heading down to SXSW. They’ll also be touring with River City Extension in April, and will close things out with a hometown show on Thursday, April 16 at Boot & Saddle.

For Esmé “Just Yet”

Posted on:

For Esmé, latest single “Just Yet” is light and fluffy with heavy dynamics. Progressive electro-pop sounds that heartbeat rhythms to a sweet and intriguing vocal; it’s smooth- sultry poetry with a deep message. Getting ready to release their second record Sugar this spring; Nathan, Martha and Dave have already given us a glimpse into what’s next, and we love it! While keeping their story’s tale, For Esmé stays warm and gorgeous with combinations of synths, fuzz and pulses. See them March 11 @ the Piston and March 17 @ the Lakefield College School.

GRANDPARENTS: New Music + Tour Kickoff 3.11

Posted on:

Last week Portland psychedelic sweethearts, Grandparents, debuted their brand new track "Kids In The Alley" on Vice’s Noisey blog. Tomorow (3.11), they will play at Mississippi Studios along with local R&B sensation Natasha Kmeto and drone-psych lords Swahili, kicking off a 2+ week spring tour in support of a three-track cassingle release which will include stops at SXSW and Treefort Music Fests. "Kids In The Alley" showcases a dramatically matured level of production for the group, with heavily spaced out Tame Impala inspired synth trances eloquently placed between playful pop infused verses. I couldn’t be more stoked for their forthcoming debut full length due out later this year. It’s been a long time coming, but Grandparents are sure to be Portland’s next huge deal.

The “glocken-synth” of Glockabelle at Pinoeer Works on 03.27

Posted on:

Are you ready for another totally unique, kickass woman making music out of NYC? Glockabelle is a classically trained pianist from Paris who, like a creature from Peter Pan, plays a lyre-shaped glockenspiel using eight thimbled fingers. She also experiments with two vintage Casiotones, sings in French, and describes her music as “glockrock” – but maybe "glocken-synth" is more accurate, considering the psych tendencies. Though her songs are most often delightful and whimsical, they will also feature some dark material. For instance, her chirpy Ramone’s cover “le KKK a pris mon bébé” translates into “The KKK took my baby”. Enchanté Glockabelle! See you at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn on March 27th. – Leora Mandel

Deli Premier: Diana DeMuth’s “Albuquerque” Sneak Peak

Posted on:

A product of woody Concord, MA, Diana DeMuth’s dark voice croons over funky but varied instrumentals on her new track “Act like a Stranger.” With both a voice and lyrical wisdom that sound beyond her years, DeMuth’s new record is packed with the classic themes of a young songwriter; the joys of love, traveling, the pains of love, traveling again, and the ever poignant nod to your home town. “Act Like a Stranger” breaks away from the mostly acoustic record “Albuquerque” with an energetic percussion intro and bright back up vocals out of some early 60’s pop tune. She’s already a force to be reckoned with solo, but Alain Mallet’s production props her up while never out-shining that voice. Some singers blow your hair back with their power, but I prefer those like DeMuth, smoothly pulling you in for a closer listen. Her new album Albuquerque will be coming out later this month on March 17th, be sure to keep an ear out for it. – Paul Jordan Talbot

Rock N’ Roll nostalgia at The Bowery Electric on 03.26 with Circus Life

Posted on:

Comprised of rockers from former bands Fixer, More, and January Jane, NYC trio Circus Life is all about rock’n’ roll. Their 2014 album “Little Secrets” boasts non-stop energy and influences ranging from Guns N’ Roses to AC/DC. Most of their lyrics are about the "glamour" and grossness of what the band describes as “the rock n’ roll lifestyle.” We’re talking all your grandmom’s favorites—cocaine, ecstasy, booze, women in leather, sweat, dirty Santas (streaming), and sometimes silly voyeurism: “got an ass like an earthquake, it’ll send a rattle through your bones. I want her butt on my pants, they’re getting tighter, so come on baby come on”(from the song “Just Looking”). They’re playing a show on March 26th at The Bowery Electric. For the occasion, we suggest whiskey well shots (and leaving gram-gram at home). – Leora Mandel

New Track: “Know It All” – Mike Bell & The Movies

Posted on:

Featured on Mike Bell & The Movies upcoming split 7” with Lizard Police due out March 31, via Major Bear/Messy Life/Songs from the Road, “Know It All” is a straight-ahead rocker with a fun pop touch. Utilizing vocals from ex-NONA‘s Mimi Gallagher to create a male-female interplay, corresponding to the song’s breakup dynamic, while also enlisting the services of bandmate and The Weaks‘ Evan Bernard and Chris Diehm (1994!, Quit). “Know It All” takes frustration, and flips the script .

ohnomoon unveils single “Low” + releases debut EP “VVV” at Mercury on 03.16

Posted on:

Brooklyn shoegazers OhNoMoon might not be remembered for their prolificity (the band just released their debut EP "VVV" after four singles produced from 2011 to 2013), but you sure can’t fault them for the quality of their releases. The Deli’s psych oriented staff (i.e. most of us) dug their early single "Sleeping Limbs" and the cover of "Ashes to Ashes," and are excited to find this early love still in great shape with new single "Low" – streaming below. Kat Lee’s ethereal vocals reach here new levels of dreaminess, while the guitars perfectly balance the sugar surge with the right amount of tension and dissonance. The entire EP sounds solid (you can stream it in advance here. Don’t miss their EP release party at Mercury Lounge on Monday 03.16.
