Artist to Watch: Bouquet

Posted on:

Songwriting duo Bouquet treat ecomony as an asset and not an opportunity. The elemental intimacy of their mute soundscapes always seems like it’s on the verge of breaking free, as if you’re expecting that grand moment to arrive at any moment. It never does. There’s a gothic edge to the duo’s chilly, patient instrumentation, with singer Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs’s callous vocals tethered to Max Foreman’s gauzy, metronomic vintage synths. Their latest EP, In a Dream, is quiet and impalpable, conscious of its calculated makeup though willing to be found if you accept its cold embrace. It has a release date of March 10 via Ulrike/Folktale Records, and make sure to catch them performing an in-store at Origami Vinyl on March 8.

Video Premiere: No Denyin’ by Killer Ghost

Posted on:

You’re slummin’ it in a warehouse. Nobody has caught on yet to your escapades; sneaking bread from the nearby cantina, and bird-washing at the local 7 day convenience. You’re doing it because life is too short to waste your workday on somebody else’s dream and there’s no denyin’ that the beer tastes better with a heft o’liberty thrown in. While you’re at it start a band and do it cause ‘why the fuck not?’ You can use the warehouse space to throw shows, or better yet practice to no one and be as loud and carefree as possible, while shot-gunning beers the whole time.

Call yourself Killer Ghost and haunt the walls around you. Scare of the neighborhood rats with more sass than Kim Fowley and blast your speakerbox as loud as possible with the complete Nuggets box. Make sure the noise is pointed out the window at a nearby dumpster so that all the ‘punks’ can hear it and begin to question their ethos. They will ask themselves "do I really need my studded belt, or can I just wear my conviction on my sleeve and join those Killer Ghosts in that warehouse and haunt America with apathy?"

Ask Killer Ghost all these questions and more at Cha Cha Sunday, Feb, 22nd @ 8:30

Weekend Warrior, February 20 – 22

As they work on new material, indie-punk four-piece Swearin’ headlines a lineup that runs three deep tonight at PhilaMOCA. The group has that peeking-through-the-window, un-shaded honesty; however, on the same token, there lies elements of unforgiving brute-force instrumentation. That multiple view sound exhibiting sincerity and strength, while inviting you in and then pushing you back, establishing a dynamic you’ll keep returning to. Michael Cantor, a.k.a. The Goodbye Party (formerly of The Ambulars), whose Silver Blues was The Deli Philly’s January Record of the Month, is the meat in this evening’s sandwich (or veggies for all you vegetarians/vegans). The Goodbye Party juxtaposes contemplative ambient tunes with quick shots of power-pop and rust-worn rockers, pointing you in whichever direction the momentary tale dictates. Bassist Jon Rybicki (Radiator Hospital) leads the band Attendant, whose live lineup also includes Ashley Arnwine (Pinkwash), Jen Twigg (The Ambulars), and John McLean (Dead Dog, Todd Killings). They open the night with their slightly off-kilter take on pop rock, and recently dropped a new EP Sun Room last month. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Clique, Loose Tooth, Ghost Gum & Mumblr Split Cassette Release Show at FUC Feb. 20

Posted on:
It doesn’t get that much more DIY than self-releasing a quadruple split cassette. The late Ted Nguyent has spawned two new projects, emo outfit Clique and pop-punk crew Loose Tooth. They’ll be sharing space on the tape with promising post-punk four-piece Ghost Gum and genre-jumping alt rockers Mumblr. All four bands will be on hand this evening to celebrate its release at the First Unitarian Church. Best of 2014 for Emerging KC Bands: FINAL RESULTS! BUMMER, The Philistines, Katy Guillen & the Girls

Deli Nation,

Our Year-End Poll for Emerging Kansas City artists is now complete! Kudos to grungy punk trio BUMMER (photo above by Crystal Faye Photography) for winning the poll!

And congrats to our runners up, the enigmatic psychedelic six-piece The Philistines and the compelling roots rock trio Katy Guillen and the Girls (who took second place in 2013)!

—–

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ KC scene experts (our jury) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music KC produced in 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

New Music Video: “The Sunshine of Your Youth” – Cheerleader

Posted on:

Check out pop-rock quintet Cheerleader’s new music video for “The Sunshine of Your Youth,” the title track off their forthcoming debut LP, which is schedule for release on May 19 via Bright Antenna Records. It was directed by Alexander Alexandrov, and meshes a family photo shoot with a performance by the band, demonstrating a somewhat melancholy nostalgia despite a bubbly energy. Catch Cheerleader at Union Transfer on April 23 when their tour with The Wombats comes into town.

Electronica one man act from Brooklyn Mirror Kisses plays Paslisades on 02.26th

Posted on:

Mirror Kisses is the electronic project of Brooklyn’s George Clanton, a young man blessed with a rare talent: finding great band names (ok, he’s also a talented musician). We like that name because all art, at the end of the day, is a form of narcissism, in particular when the artist – like in Mirror Kisses – is alone, in full control – because when band members are involved, the narcissism is tamed by the need for compromise, which is a force that pulls you in the opposite direction). Clanton offers a kind of shimmery electronica that relies on a heavy use of synth pads and dancey drum loops, with the vocals almost always relegated behind the rich arrangements. Streaming single"Never Late Again" gathered an impressive amount of plays in less than a month. You can see mr Narcissus live at Palisades on 02.26th.

Circuit des Yeux

Posted on:

Thrill Jockey announced this week that they had signed the local musician Haley Fohr who is better known as Circuit des Yeux. The label will be releasing her next album, In Plain Speech, on May 19th.

Haley has deep, lush, and haunting voice that blends seamlessly with looping electronic canvases she creates. Below is a live edition of her older track "Nova 88".

New video from The North Country for “The Cross We Bear”

Posted on:

Huzzah! The North Country have released a video for "The Cross We Bear," a single off their upcoming album There Is Nothing To Fear. The video shows the day in the life of a wooden artist’s mannequin-cum-Everyman who’s got just the dreariest life. I don’t want top ruin the ending for you, but he gets out of his rut with the help of a skateboarding apatosaurus and some acid. Also serendipitous love.

The North Country is hittin’ the road this April, with dates through the mid-atantic and South (and a couple stops in Texas), spreading the glory of the DC DIT scene far and wide. You should really go see them. –Natan Press
