New Track: “We Are Selfish” – The Ghost In You

Posted on:

"We Are Selfish," the latest from Billy Polard, a.k.a. The Ghost In You, serves as an eerie reminder of the depths of sadness and the painful thoughts and consequences it can cause. Acoustic guitar, the soft touches of key, and those sincere melodic vocals deliver a forthright gut-wrenching message that is all but assured to trigger an emotional response. Polard really knows how to tug at the heartstrings. (Photo by Kevin La Torre)

Moon Bounce Opening for Flamingosis at KFN Feb. 24

Posted on:

Corey Regensburg, a.k.a. Moon Bounce, brings his custom formula of electro-R&B to Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Taking that smooth and sensual soul vibe and supercharging it with that aforementioned foundational get-down bounce, then, Regensburg reaches back implementing his knack for allowing elements to futuristically spin out in an intoxicating twist. That mind-warping, up close and personal feel is certain to generate some natural heat. The united front of Grave Goods, Heaven In Stereo (a.k.a. Ben Pramuk), and SamGreens, known as Club Mega, will also be laying down some grooves, and the experimental sampling output of Flamingosis (Aaron Velasquez), whom recently released a new album Kahunastyle via Keats Collective, fills out this Tuesday night escape from reality. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Highlights from our Year End Poll: GRUMBY plays Lot 45 on 02.26

Posted on:

Mysterious Brooklyn electronica duo GRUMBY, who made our recent list of Best Emerging NYC Artists, produces evocative and free music. Emancipated from danceability and structural concerns, their tunes introduce the listener to a world of beautiful sonic encounters, unexpected aural developments, and tasteful textures. The most striking of their recent tracks are eastern sounding single ‘Sultana Melek’ (our favorite one, streaming), which showcases a noteworthy production and attention to the detail, and "Yoshi’s Penthouse," which sounds like an exercise in electro-lounge. This track confirm our suspicion that today’s electronica is filling in for that genre you may remember your grandparents mentioning, called jazz (and all its derivatives), i.e. music that’s more losely structured than pop and relies heavily on improvisation – whether recorded or live. Grumby will appear at Bushwick Lot 45 on Thursday February 26.

Sune’s Dark Texas Minimal Technopop

Posted on:

Damned dark, weird electronics with lady vocals; you get me every time. This time it’s Austin’s Sune providing the hit off the darkness pipe, an electronic duo that undoubtedly deserves to be better known by its hometown. Their unique brand of electronic pop, with roots in Björk and minimal techno (no surprise that one half is from Germany), has landed Sune on some interesting stages over the past year or so, like the excellent Exploded Drawing‘s 3 Year Anniversary show, at the equally excellent Museum of Human Achievement, and even the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston (you can watch some of that show here). Most recently they put out an arresting live video for their track "Jafar," filmed at music gig connection service Solstice Live‘s Loft. "Jafar" is frantic and jerky, like a mad run through the night into a forest of LED lights. Its strange, muted rhythm is overwhelmed by the sometimes off-pitch, constantly changing "melody" of bleeps that feels like it just could drive you happily mad after too much exposure, but this warped and wild sound is contrasted to great effect with harp-like tones and echoing vocals from singer Audri Acuña. This is future music, my friends. Give the future a good long listen below and at their Soundcloud here, and look for Sune to keep up a frequent set of shows both local and international as that future keeps moving ahead. In fact, if you’re out and about on Friday February 27, get out to Cheer Up Charlie’s and see some Sune at The Human Circuit’s record release party.

Flying Pace plays Mercury on 03.01

Posted on:

Kristie Redfield’s brainchild Flying Pace (a band that needs a bigger couch, so that they can feel more comfortable in front of a camera) released its third EP "The Spectacle," at the end of 2014. The record sounds like an interesting blend of styles quite disconnected from each other. The overall sound is indie, but the approach is consistently mellow, with odd tempos often recalling the angularity of math rock. We hear some kind of jazzy influence in there too, but as soon as that thought materialized, their song switched to a very simple pop section. Single "Flying Pace Theme Song" (streaming) nicely sums up this complexity and unpredictabiliy. See Flying Pace at Mercury Lounge on Sunday 03.01 .
