Another NYC garage suprgroup: Beech Creeps release debut album + travel to SXSW

Posted on:

Beech Creeps is a new, very noisy NYC based trio featuring members previously active with the likes of Yeasayer, Pterodactyl, People Get Ready and Ex Models among otheres (wow!). Their music has the immediacy of garage rock but sports a sound that’s more tense and explosive, reminiscent at time of Sonic Youth’s noise rock. Considering the talent behind the instruments, we highly recommend their upcoming shows, in particular the (self titled) record release party at Union Pool on March 3rd. If you are going to Austin for SXSW you may stumble upon them there…

Parour Tricks sign to Bar / None + play SXSW

Posted on:

We’ve been following The Parlour Tricks for quite some time (check out this 2011 interview when they were still called Lily and the Parlour Tricks), and admittedly we’ve had our up and downs with them (last year they didn’t appreciate our sarcasm about them premiering a video with the Wall Street Journal). But politics never affect our music appreciation, and this stylish indie pop band has been proving to have  the talent, the song and the commitment to thrive in what’s probably the toughest music scene in the world. We are therefore happy to celebrate their recent signing with super-awesome label Bar / None, home – among others – of pop luminaries such as Yo La Tengo, Of Montreal and Alex Chilton. The band was selected to play an officials SXSW show this coming March.

From the Best of NYC: Your Old Droog brings NYC Hip Hop to SXSW

Posted on:

Coney Island rapper Your Old Droog (featured in our recent Best of NYC Emerging Artists list) derives his name from “Droog,” the Russian word for friend. Indeed, his music is like a walk down rap’s memory lane back to 1994. Initially coming off as another gravel-voiced rapper fresh out the gravel-voiced rapper factory, Droog quickly overcomes initial prejudice with his rapidly evolving rhyme patterns and sardonic wordplay. In “Porno for Pyros” (streaming) from the Kinison EP, Droog emphasizes his relevance saying, “Back in the line of fire. Sayin my style’s dated is like sayin’ wine has expired.” Cheers to that. – BrokeMc

New Music Video: “Got It” – Mumblr

Posted on:

Mumblr just shared a new music video for "Got It," the opener of their latest LP Full of Snakes (Fleeting Youth). Combining clips of the group biking around Philly on a rainy day and raw footage from their performance at now defunct Golden Tea House (RIP), you find a juxtaposition between laidback contemplation and all out primal rage, which matches the versatility of the band’s instrumentation and Nick Morrison’s vocals. The video was directed by Ian Ross, and we’re sure that you’ll be able to catch Mumblr performing live in town again sooner than later.

Slaughter Beach, Dog Opening for Hostage Calm at The Barbary Feb. 25

Posted on:

Modern Baseball’s Jake Ewald’s side project steps into the Barbary tonight, opening a mid-week showcase. Slaughter Beach, Dog continues an established standard of developing lyrically rich songs that are personally relatable with thought-provoking images and loose Velcro-sticky catchy phrases. That coupled with a tight pop-punk instrumentation, allowing the words to dissolve and sink in yet retains a reserve of strong-willed force when called upon. This bill also features another emotive outfit in CLIQUE, whose constant flowing instrumentation provides the feeling of perpetual motion. The night is rounded out by intensely smooth, melodic hardcore of Such Gold, while Hostage Calm headline amid their final run of shows. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 6:30pm, $14, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Gal Pals take their Garage Pop from Austin to LA + play SXSW

Posted on:

LA just got a big ole gift from the city of Austin, Texas, as rocker pair Gal Pals has made the big jump further west. Gal Pals makes stripped-down, up-energy summer pop that’s a good bit garage, and also a good bit of bubblegum and fun. Y’get the feeling listening to their music that these two ladies moved to Cali just to put their music in the right setting, which is undoubtedly a beach party in the warm day, with the Gal Pals’ lazer-bright clothes and sunglasses standing out against the blue sky as they blast out their guitar-and-drums-and-nothin’-else pop music. The band will be playing official shows at SXSW this coming March.

Panic is Perfect Releases Their New Album – Behind Your Eyelids TODAY

Posted on:

The talented synth pop band, San Francisco based Panic Is Perfect has released their new EP, Behind Your Eyelids TODAY! Their new album is innovative and unique. We like this album because it grabs from different genres and sounds from international music as well as local and American pop rock music styles.

Initially formed when Mike Hoffman went to southern India to visit his long-time friend Jeremy Belzer, Panic is Perfect started out as an acoustic duo, traveling India by train with a backpack and broken guitar. Four months later, Jeremy joined Mike in San Francisco to officially pursue the band. Mike and Jeremy write and produce both independently and in collaboration. As multi-instrumentalists, they both play most of the instruments on their recordings. They each sing lead vocals on the songs that they contribute as writers, adding more diversity to the overall sound. The eventual additions of Ty Parker (drums), Joey Hassid (synth) and the newest member, 21 year old David Monzon (guitar) completed the 5-piece live band that bring Panic is Perfect to life onstage.

You’ve got a chance to see Panic is Perfect perform live in San Francisco and at South by Southwest! Until then, check out their awesome music video for "Go Go Go", a single from their new album!
