A Deli NYC premiere: “Prisms” by Youth Signals

Posted on:

Despite being a Brooklyn band, Youth Signals‘ latest single, ‘Prisms,’ carries characteristics of the other coast – or maybe even of the music some UK bands were playing in the late 80s (Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen). The song evokes a landscape (and society) far from hospitable ("we live in a land where everyone steals…. crumbling buildings/ no one has a home"), but for all its bleak content, ‘Prisms’ retains a hopeful disposition. Its sun-stroked, washed-out guitar keeps the song afloat, and this, coupled with the darkly lush vocals and languid pace of the drums, imparts a serene sense of calm. Towards the middle, the song slows, bending to entropy, but it soon breaks through, returning to its original elated existence. – @emilioherce

Album Review: Krill–A Distant Fist Unclenching

Posted on:

A Distant Fist Unclenching, the newest batch of songs from Boston’s Krill, is–for lack of a more refined, technical musical term–freakin’ awesome. Heavy Modest Mouse and Built to Spill influences permeate the tracks, especially on songs like “Foot.” Super-tight stops and thick guitars are rampant throughout this song (and the rest of the album), making it nearly impossible not to crank this record as loud as your speakers will go.

Krill has quite a big year planned so far. Currently on a European tour, the band will be back in Boston on 3/13 for an LP release show at Great Scott, before heading back on the road for a string of dates that will be capped-off by an opening spot at this May’s Boston Calling festival.

Mad Ones @ The Horseshoe Taven

Posted on:

I sat down and exhaled… on with the headphones ….now let’s hear some Mad Ones. I cranked up their latest single “Walking on the Ceiling” which was released last October. The rumbling drums of Phil Wilson keeps the song rolling; It has a bit of a softer beginning and by the end its full on pandemonium (one of the best words). Next up was their previous single “Leather Rug”. This was more of straight up headbanger that gives their band name new meaning. See this grunge-punk, two-piece live this Saturday, February 28, at the Horseshoe Tavern. Also on the bill are our friends the Effens, Brews Willis and The OBGM’s!!-Kris “Big City” Gies

Brooklyn/Philly emcee Kuf Knotz recruited The Lawsuit‘s Brian Dale Allen Strouse to lay down the hook for his latest single "Get Free." Producer Goldenspiral (a.k.a. Adrian Michael) also brought out their inner-reggae warriors on this track from his forthcoming album A Positive Light (Ropeadope). Kuf Knotz will be celebrating its release in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 28 at Franky Bradley’s (formerly Sisters), the new Center City restaurant/bar/music venue from Mark Bee (Silk City, N. 3rd).

Artist of the Year Interview: Löwin

Posted on:

After a month of intense deliberation, polling and exactly 500 million emails sent on the subject, The Deli Austin announced our Emerging Artist of the Year a few weeks ago. This year’s edition is Löwin, a rising rock act that just about ran away with the whole contest. We had a chat with the newly crowned Artists of the Year for 2014, and that’s what we’ve got for you to get yer eyes on today:

Löwin is The Deli Austin’s 2014 Artist of the Year. Our jurors and readers handily voted you into the winner’s spot, how do you guys feel about that?

S: It feels pretty awesome considering we didn’t even have a record out in 2014! To me that just means we won people over with our live show which is a wonderful feeling for a band…especially one as new as we are.

C: Yeah, the response at our shows has been great every time we play out, and when people are into you it just makes you want to perform that much harder for them.

N: Feels great, there were a lot of awesome bands in the poll.

K: Very awesome. Its a great feeling knowing the shows are making noise and it just makes the EP release that much more exciting.

The Cordovas Release “Prison Guards” EP

Posted on:

Last Tuesday The Cordovas released their new “Prison Guards” EP. Accompanying the album was this simple video of frontman and former Carson Daly bandleader Joe Firstman picking through the title track. It’s a gentle song championing the strength of the spirit that remains true to itself, the same uplifting, beautiful stuff that Firstman has proven so adept at casually tossing out. This EP is quite bare-bones compared to previous efforts. It’s a departure from the genre-hopping of 2014’s "Love Bravely" and the Southern blues of their self-titled debut, placing Firstman’s songwriting front and center. The Cordovas mainly stick to their acoustic guitars and keys with some handclaps thrown in, and raise a some goosebumps with a few instances of striking vocal harmonies (check out the end of "Winter Blues.") "Prison Guards" is a straighforward EP of unembellished lyrics with amazing flow and a little bit of soul. Check it out for yourself HERE. –Terra James-Jura

Bad Motivators play the sound of pizza

Posted on:

Rock n’roll has had many different iterations over the years, but in all its chameleon like stages it has maintained its sense of rebellion which made it so exciting, and scandalous, in the 50’s.  All that is required of a rock n’roll band is that essence of insolence regardless of whatever else you sprinkle in.

With Bad Motivators insolence comes in spades; loud guitars, sarcasm, pizza, with some occasional harmonies make up the dynamic quartet. On a song like ‘Too High’ Bad Motivators marry a good olde Chuck Berry riff with snotty lyrics that can’t even… Like, “I’m not even gonna bother talking to you because I just can’t.” Throw in a cool little surf shack organ vibe a la the B-52’s and you’ve nearly satiated yourself with a pretty cool laissez-faire punk song.

Check out these sarcastic, pizza loving rockers at The Lo-Fi tonight with Spirit Award, Lucy, and Gothic Tropic

New Walking Sticks video for “You Got What You Wanted”

Posted on:

The Walking Sticks give us what we want (I had to), premiering a new video for "You Got What You Wanted" on DCist today. Made on an iphone, it features what looks to be a single shot walk through a snow-covered wood with the snow falling. The creative minds of The Walking Sticks have managed to turn the otherwise dreary and upsetting weather into something beautiful and mystical. Thank you.

The song itself is pretty sexy. Like Portishead sexy, where the sex is kind of angry/frustrated/despairing sex (because, in this case, it seems, the sex is too addictive to escape). The music does not share the sexy gloom of a "Wandering Star" however. A beautiful organ leads the pretty sounds that fall about it like soft white snowflakes. The track, like the video, is filled with brightness, and Chelsea Lee’s crystal voice. "Can’t stop loving the high" indeed. –Natan Press

Goodbye Honolulu just makes you feel good! Close your eyes and go for it! "Mother To A Brother” grabs you by the hips and gets your tambourines shakin’! They are a wave of garage pop melodies with a heavy bounce in its step. Killer no-frills vocal that has bold moves and brotherly harmonies that leave a lasting impression.
