New Brooklyn Psych Rockers Female play Baby’s All Right tonight (02.04)

Posted on:

Comprised of four dudes (some of them unshaved), there’s a new Brooklyn band that calls itself Female and just released debut single "Florida" – talk about being fond of paradoxes! After all, genders are blending these days, but hopefully that will never be true for geography. Florida is a plodding dream rock song with an interesting, evolving melody, and features heavier drums and a spacier atmoshpere than your average "chill wave" tune – which is NYC’s own, poppier take on psychedelia. References to the psych rock of the 60s abound in the guitar and vocals (you may hear some references from The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era at some point). Female formed in the summer of 2014 and will be playing a free show at Baby’s All Right tonight (02.04).

Seesins’ Reepins’ Residency Kicks Off at Ortlieb’s Feb. 4

Posted on:

A pair of talented songwriters/guitarists in bands originally hailing from Bucks County team up to host a month-long Wednesday residency starting this evening at the revamped Ortlieb’s. While both Joe Montone (of Heat Thunder) and Brian Dale Allen Strouse (of The Lawsuits) each exhibit a strong foundation based around crafting songs inspired by folk styles, each is open to grabbing from a large uninhibited toolbox. This freedom and flexibility offers a wide range of possibilities. Each week will also feature a special guest and a clean slate of tunes. Tonight, soulful crooning Ron Gallo (formerly of Toy Soldiers) throws his hat into the ring. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $3, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Hanging On The Telephone” (The Nerves Cover) – Eel Bros

Posted on:

A special, limited edition seven-inch box set was released to commemorate the third annual Thirty Three and a Third art show held at Gallery1988 in Los Angeles. The collection, which was curated by Dana Lechtenberg, had artists reimagine and reinterpret classic album covers so it was fitting to have some musicians do the same, sharing renditions of some of their favorite songs. Below is a cover by Eel Bros (consisting of Man Man‘s Honus Honus and Hot Karate’s King Cyrus) of "Hanging On The Telephone," a song by The Nerves, which was made popular by Blondie. For the B-side of the 7-inch, the duo also took on Danzig’s "Blood and Tears." Other artists such as No Age, Rozwell Kid, and Andrew Jackson Jihad’s Sean Bonnette took on bands like Black Flag, Misfits and Wheatus for the box set as well.

Listen to Buffalo Rodeo’s New Single “Blue Sky”

Posted on:

We got a listen of Buffalo Rodeo’s mesmerizing first single off their upcoming EP "1 2 3 Water." "Blue Sky" veers a little more into New Age territory than their 2013 release "Home Videos," (it has a few more sustained synth notes…) but still maintains the 70’s psych haze that makes these Bowling Green natives fit in so well with the Nashville scene. Speaking of which, the band is hitting up The High Watt on March 7th for an EP release show with Kansas Bible Company and Twiggs during their spring tour. The single officially drops February 10th, and the album March 6th. -Terra James-Jura

Best DC Area Emerging Artists of 2014: FINAL RESULTS: 1. Typefighter, 2. Sleepwalkers, 3. Teen Mom

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging DC Area Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Congratulations to garage-pop wizards Typefighter for winning the poll! Typefighter released The End of Everything in early 2014 to much critical acclaim. Their tight and energetic live shows make them a must see, and obviously one of DC’s most exciting bands. We wait with baited breath for their next move.

Richmond’s Sleepwalkers came in a close second with our jurors, thanks to their phenominal debut album, Greenwood Shade. Less than two years after they formed, Sleepwalkers released an impressively ambitious and succesful collection of well crafted psychedelic pop-rock that defies categorization and leaves jaws dropped.

Teen Mom keep our excitement bubbling on a constant simmer, dropping lo-fi fuzz-pop gems every few months. A staple of DC’s rich house-show scene, they do everything you love about electric guitars. We want more. Now please. Thank you.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ DC Area scene expert (our jury) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music DC Area produced in the year 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

New Music Video: “Cancer Money” – Pinkwash

Posted on:

Anyone can fall into the hypnotic trance-like state of unquestioningly accepting routine. As a result, sometimes harsh reality needs to be brought into focus. Pinkwash’s new single “Cancer Money” featured on their upcoming 7’’, which Sister Polygon will release next month, does just that. The song tears away the façade of the cancer industry as Joey Doubek openly shrieks his frustrations amid the continuous surge of volatile venting guitar and drum combination. Pinkwash also plans to release a full-length album via Don Giovanni this year.

Tacocat and The Young Evils open for some guy tonight

Posted on:

There’s a big hoopla going on tonight: some guy from SF is in town and he brought his face paint and we’re all excited to see how the sweat washes it away. But there’s more than that… at the very same event there’s an evil lurking and a cat with a penchant for Mexican food, and that sounds very enticing.

The evil I speak of is The Young Evils, Seattle’s bittersweet rock-popsters. If The Cars spun out on the Vaselines and consequently drove straight into Wreckless Eric, The Young Evils would be on the sideline documenting it all to sell it to the tabloids later, and oh how they would revel in the drama!

The name Tacocat pretty much sums up the band. Some of their songs are about cats; some are about tacos, some just about being person in a world. While tacos explain themselves, and we deal with being a person everyday, cats are a much more complex subject.  What exactly is a cat thinking? Does it want peace and harmony; dissent and chaos, or simply a warm laptop to sits on? Does the modern cat express empathy or is the cute cuddly persona merely a facade to cover up the deviant sociopath that lies underneath? Hear Tacocat’s sentiments on the subject tonight.

The Young Evils open for Tacocat, who open for Ty Segall tonight at Neptune, 7PM, FREE

NYC lounge rockers Looms release “Happiness” from upcoming debut album

Posted on:

Brooklyn lounge rock band, Looms, are set to release their debut album entitled "Waking Days," and we are streaming here their first single, “Happiness.” The title is actually deceitful, since the song depicts happiness as the façade in a relationship. This is actually a break up tune, which comes in gentle on keyboards (electric piano is a signature sound here), then aggressively builds up in tension, exploding in a chorus filled with louder guitar power chords and vocals. The soul/rock-influenced quartet, which underwent a name change recently, has been at it since 2012 and plans on forging through 2015 with "Waking Days" in tow. – Robert Frezza

New Track: “20 Grand Palace” – rjd2

Posted on:

With a jazz-awakening start, flowing into the boogie-down funk with a touch of strings and some spacey keys, “20 Grand Palace,” rjd2’s latest offering is certain to solicit movement no matter where your listening to it. Taking advantage of the free sample library of loops and sounds recorded in its studio, Brooklyn’s Converse Rubber Tracks is providing musicians access to its collection worldwide. This track is a fine example within a plethora of possibilities.
