City Rain Opening for Leisure Cruise at MilkBoy Philly Feb. 27

Posted on:

Noteworthy Brooklyn duo Leisure Cruise is stopping into Philly for part of their tour, but it isn’t the only reason to head down to MilkBoy Philly tonight. It will also be a good chance to catch City Rain, who had a great 2014 with the release of Songs For a High School Dance. Tonight will be the electronic outfit’s first show of 2015, and it will also be their first full band show as three-piece where they’ll be introducing new drummer Ross Robey (formerly of Cold Fronts). They also might just debut some new tunes from their upcoming album that is slated to drop in the spring. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, $12, 21+ (Photo by Reji B.) – Bill McThrill

A.D.D. or Analog Digital Disorder are back with their second full-length album, Core. The Hard Rock band is fronted by the talented Matilda Moon. She soars and growls throughout the new album, but shines especially strong on the album’s forthcoming single "I Regret".

Core will be released on March 24th via Pavement Entertainment.

A.D.D. will be performing an acoustic set on March 13th at Cairo House in West Chicago.

Chicago Loud 9

Chicago Loud 9 or cLoud9 are working hard to bring funk back to Chicago. Their latest single is called "Punk Soul". It is filled with local references, thumbing basslines, and a soulful chorus.

Pollen Would Like to Talk to You about Products

Posted on:

We showed you a bit about Austin art garage group Pollen back in June 2014, and Pollen is back early this year with a new release, mostly about products and how we in the world deal with them. It’s raw as fuck music, both in terms of its no frills, no bullshit approach and for its true garage band sound, and single "Supply Chain" is one that’ll get pounding around in your head for a while. It’s a little bit old NYC dancepunk with a bit of D.C.’s The Evens, plus some Austin awareness and DIY that work pretty well together, with that "Coca cola, co-coca cola," "Motorola, Mo-motorola" hook just refusing to leave the brain once it gets in there. See what we mean below, and keep these guys on your radar if you like your music to say something about society while also givin’ you a beat to move your feet to.

Summer Cannibals Release ‘Show Us Your Mind’

Posted on:

Take a swift punch to the gut and throw up and you’ve got the start of a good recipe for a show. All you need now is the hard-hitting beats and punk energy of Summer Cannibals’ new album Show Us Your Mind and you’re cooking.

The album is full of energy front to back. The grungy and fuzzed out guitar keeps up much of that energy, but singer Jessica Boudreaux manages to temper some of the knife’s-edge riffs with sweet, even hooky melodies. Occasionally you’ll hear harmonies as Jessica belts it out about a relationship that is going down the tubes. But any sign that the band might slow down and trade in their beat up instruments for pop outfits is given up on a dark track like “Afraid To Feel”, which churns along like blood pumping through the neck.

All the pieces come together on Summer Cannibals second album. Jessica Boudreaux shows herself to be a powerhouse vocalist, much in the same vein as Patti Smith. (Patti wrote a song called “Summer Cannibals”. Coincidence?) And the rest of the band provides a perfect complement to her soaring melodies. You’d be inclined to feel sentimental for the bands of the ‘90s if you had time while the album drives along.

If you’re feeling the hungry sort of restlessness of a long day at work—maybe a customer spilled mustard on your shirt or a dog got off its leash and ran amok in the kitchen—“Show Us Your Mind” is the perfect digestif to sooth your day. Simply turn up the speakers, sit back and let all the mundane frustrations float away on some good, straightforward and head-banging rock n’ roll.

From the NYC submissions: Domonique’s electro-pop

Posted on:

Lately, we’ve been writing a lot about the explosion of woman-made electronic music in NYC, referring to it at times as a nouvelle – although less rebellious and more technologically advanced – riot grrrl movement. This track entitled "It’s Only You" by 22 year old NYC songwriter and producer Dominique is only the latest of a seemingly infinite list. Essential programming and a very tasteful production allow Dominique’s voice to be the real focus of the track, which conveys to the song an inconceivable level of dreaminess.

This artist submitted music for coverage here.

Adia Victoria Launches National Tour

Posted on:

On Wednesday night The 5 Spot hosted the unrivaled talents of local rising blues star Adia Victoria. With riffs easily reminiscent to the talents of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Adia evokes a sense of composed nostalgia while simultaneously painting worlds with a vocal mastery akin to Victoria Spivey. Wednesday’s show was the unofficial launch of a 20-date tour of the US with Hurray for the Riff Raff. Adia will be starting in Atlanta on March 5 and rounding out her excursion in Dallas, TX on April 1st. Using her fan favorite “Stuck in the South” to round off the evening seemed ironic. Regarding the tour send-off Adia commented, "It’s great to see so many people braved the freak blizzard to show us some love. Love is a good note to send-off on." Tall Juan tours with Juan Wauters + plays Shea Stadium on 03.08

Posted on:

Blending garage and rockabilly, Tall Juan plays music that’s unpretentious and fun. The Brooklyn via Buenos Aires musician also enjoys relevant connections: after recording (streaming) single "Falling Down" with Mac DeMarco, he left for a few east coast gigs with friend and Captured Tracks’ artist Juan Wauters, who also happens to play drums for him (to reciprocate, Tall plays bass in his band). You can see Tall Juan live at Shea Stadium on March 8.

Stream: BREAKFAST, “Boris”

Posted on:

Who is Boris, exactly? According to downtempo synth pop four piece BREAKFAST, he’s the leecher who abuses of his high posotion without any real inslight into the concept of artistry. A mentor with experience, sure, but one who’s misguided and thinks about the big picture without considering a true artist’s essence. It comes on the heels of their previous single "Diane", a smiliar chracter study that follows the band’s knack for dubby, texture-rich modular synthesizers. I wonder what character they’ll think of next.

New Track: “Go For It” – CRUISR

Posted on:

“Go For It,” the latest single from CRUISR, is the type track that can really break the ice. With a loose infectious energy and a tightly compacted sandy groove, the song is a great way to shake off that chill and transition over to warmer weather. “Go ahead, now go for it.”
