After releasing their debut tracks via Ranch Records, local four-piece Dogs on Acid (featuring Peter Helmis, Joe Reinhart and Nick Tazza formerly of Algernon Cadwallader as well as Nate Dionne of Snowing) recently shared “Flushed,” which is one half of their forthcoming 7” via Asian Man Records. The song’s tumbling melodic momentum makes it a natural stuck-in-your-head rocker that leaves you wanting more. They’ll be headlining Boot & Saddle this evening, which will be their second show in Philly this week, and if you didn’t make it to the First Unitarian Church on Monday or did and just couldn’t get enough of Dogs on Acid, well, here’s your opportunity to check them out in one of the best sounding rooms in Philly. They’ll be joined by The Spirit of the Beehive, who play a range of highs and lows finding an unexpected middle ground between soothing hypnotic astral dream-pop and a denser, shoegazing atmosphere, filled with ever volatile stormy instrumentation that lies in waiting. The group’s musical outlook inhabits darkly clouded sonic terrain. In its intermediate lighter moments, the clouds soften revealing transitions of calm; however, behind that ray of light lies a persistent unforgiving torrential roar. Whether one prefers the calm or the storm, it’s easy to get sucked in. Also along for the ride are relative pop-punk newcomers Quit, who open a night full of intrigue that promises to catapult you toward the weekend. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita
NYC rapper Mike Wilson unveils video for “Red Matter”
Mike Wilson’s album "Fenix" shows an MC of venerable versatility. While many rappers discover they have a flow and stick to a single application of it, Wilson explores his flow from track to track. Hailing from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, his Native Tongue roots often show, but he also conjures equal parts LA and ATL. His new video for the track “Red Matter” is pretty much a single verse laying out his mission statement as an MC. He boasts, “I hash tag three sixes and steal police sketches to hire new priests based on police records. My goal is to implode the world. That’s one method to see your soul suffer and get one off the checklist.” From hooks borrowed from Broadway musicals to Star Trek references, Mike Wilson is reflecting on the whole spectrum. – BrokeMC
Debut Anomie EP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Anomie, the solo venture/moniker of Field Mouse’s Rachel Browne, has released a new self-titled EP via Father/Daughter Records. The album includes contributions from fellow band member Andrew Futral on bass while the virtually omnipresent Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Lithuania, etc.) tackles percussion. These songs were written in California during a difficult time in Browne’s life, and they serve as a means of reflection and catharsis, which you can stream and purchase below. Live 2.11 – Nic Gordon Benefit with Hustle & Drone, The Shivas, Talkative and Us Lights
Last month, Portland local and friend of the music community, Nic Gordon, fell victim to a random act of violence that left him with head and brain injuries, and is currently going through physical therapy to regain speech.
The music community is responding by throwing a benefit show on Wednesday, Feb 11th at Rontoms (where Nic worked) to raise funds towards Nic’s medical expenses. And it’s a helluva stacked bill, featuring Laura Palmer’s Death Parade, Us Lights, Talkative, The Shivas and headliners Hustle & Drone. Music starts at 8pm and cover is a suggested donation of $5-10. All door proceeds and ten-percent of bar sales go towards the cause. There will also be a raffle held for band merchandise from Wampire, Blouse, Hustle & Drone, as well as live concert photo prints by Todd Walberg of each band on the bill. In addition, there will be 20 limited-run posters designed by Showdeer and hand-printed by Misplaced AK Screen Printing that will go to the first 20 folks to donate $20 or more at the door.
You shouldn’t need a good reason to see any of these bands by themselves, but all on a bill together and for a cause like this, it might be foolish not to be at Rontoms Wednesday night.

Best of Nashville 2014 for Emerging Artists, FINAL RESULTS: 1. ELEL, 2. BASECAMP, 3. Wings of Apollo
Deli Nation,
Our Year End Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!
Kudos to ELEL for winning The Deli NASHVILLE’s Artist of the year! The new Mom + Pop signees are poised to release their debut EP into the world on March 3rd. The 8-piece supergroup dish out some big, world-flavored indie pop, and their live show can be classified as one of the happiest places on earth. If you haven’t heard "40 Watt" yet, then for Chrissakes, here it is!
Electronic collaborators BASECAMP came in second. The trio have been building a following of their emotionally-charged, sparsely-produced music for the past few years. They recently have announced "Gradient" a live concert/dance series of all original music with local dance troupe Found Movement Group. More details and tickets are available HERE.
Wings of Apollo came in third in the overall vote in addition to sweeping our Reader’s Choice Poll. The trio released their epic "By Force" EP earlier in 2014, and are channeling their heavy metal talents into a new album this year.
Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of Nashville scene experts (our jury is listed under the chart) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.
If you are a geek interested in all the subtleties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Nashville produced in the year 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!
