Troy Ramey: When The Lights Came

Posted on:

On December 23, 2014, Troy Ramey’s first solo EP, When the Lights Came, was released, capping-off a long road of writing, recording and crowd-funding for the Vermont native. Currently residing in New York City, Troy’s first foray into solo music proves to be quite a success. His grasp of crafting a catchy pop song is incredible for such a relatively unknown artist. From start to finish, it’s clear that these songs were meticulously thought-out, and perfectly executed. His voice is so strong and powerful that it immediately grabs your ears and demands your attention. My two favorite tracks are the title track and “Rosary”, the single that was exclusively released via The Deli New England a few months ago. Both demonstrate such immense vocal performances that it’s hard not to be drawn into the music.

Joel Gion & the Primary Colours The Love Dimension Cellar Doors and Down Dirty Shake Play The Independent-1/22

Posted on:

On January 22nd, The Independent will be hosting a psychedelic music showcase featuring Brian Jonestown Massacre’s charismatic percussion extraordinaire, Joel Gion and his band The Primary Colours, San Francisco’s premiere psych revivalist band, The Love Dimension, psych pop/post punk band, Cellar Doors and psych soul band, Down Dirty Shake. You don’t see too many full local line ups play The Independent, so do your best to attend to ensure these bands have a successful show. The more we help local bands fill larger venues, the more the venues will be inclined to give Bay Area bands a chance to shine.

Not only is the line up local, but the bands are seasoned and absolutely stellar. We love a big shows just as much as we love bands straight out of the garage. Make your way out to the Independent and have a blast!

Lame-O Records‘ six-song compilation to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy foundation, Strength In Weakness, is due out on February 3. The local label has already shared tracks from Modern Baseball ("Alpha Kappa fall Of Troy The Movie Part Deaux") and Spraynard ("Haulin’ Oats"). Its latest offering is another catchy power-pop ditty from Philly trio Hurry called "Shake It Off," which is definitely not a Taylor Swift cover and is available for streaming below. RUN WITH THE KITTENS

Posted on:

This indie rock trio keeps it tight and funky! There’s no shortage of distorted guitars, seemingly endless bank of creative sounds, or high-energy vocals with Run with the Kittens. These 11-year veterans definitely like to keep things interesting with an exciting natural progression. “Hijacked”, the preview song to their in-the-works double album, showcases that even losing a member won’t affect their sound. They keep it fresh with their clever mix of funk, disco, rock and at times a little bit of hip-hop – the whole mixture is infectious and ingenious. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the release of their album, and do yourself a favour; run out Jan 22 @ The Cameron House or Jan 24 @ The Garrison. Enjoy their contagious energy!-Courtney Chalapenko

Zs Release Latest, Xe, With Show at (Le) Poisson Rouge

Posted on:

Brooklyn experimental trio Zs has always been defying expectations, and their latest release, the mesmeric Xe (pronounced Zee), is no different. The record features some of Zs’s most accessible work, yet remains as challenging and captivating as any of their previous releases.  “Corps,” the third track on the album, begins with the hypnotic plucking of Higgins’s guitar, and is immediately matched by Fox’s tom heavy fills, a machine gun patter played between toms and their rims. Hilmer’s saxophone refrains, sinewy and versatile, modulate the band’s volume and energy throughout. The rest of the album remains meticulously composed, but because it was recorded live in studio, captures the frenetic energy of their live sets. Zs will be releasing Xe tonight with a show at (Le) Poisson Rouge. – Emilio Herce (@emilioherce)

Get a Glimpse Into the Inner Workings of Free Cake For Every Creature at Great Indoors Jan. 21

Posted on:

Free Cake For Every Creature, the solo venture which evolved into the band of upstate New York transplant Katie Bennett, performs tonight at Great Indoors. Bennett’s songwriting style offers a glimpse into her inner workings. These episodic insights expose a vulnerability, which can be appreciated for its sincere/honest qualities; after all opening up to the outside world can be a frightening proposition. These songs also inhabit a natural sweetness as Bennett’s soft vocals correspond to an air of innocence juxtaposed to intimate lyrics, which spread out over the emotional spectrum. They will be joined by the witty, garage-punk quartet Littler. The trio of Trace Mountains, featuring David Benton (LVL UP), Jim Hill and Liz Pelly, has an easy-going singer/songwriter-punk hybrid as the lyrics offer a glimpse into the darkness. Weekly Features: Toot Sweet – live at The Gutter on Friday 01.23

Posted on:

During my coverage of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014, I had the pleasure of being introduced to this Toot Sweet‘s (extremely fun) groove-tunes in a live setting; the band caught me completely off-guard. Their music oscillates seamlessly between the lighthearted and carefree, pained romanticism and everything in between, all with the nostalgic tone of an age lost to most modern culture, but with a euphoric freshness that instills new relevance and desire for such original songwriting. I had a chance to reach out to the band’s front lady Mary Spencer Knapp, to ask a few questions about her band, her influences, and her accordion. It seems rare that a modern day band beckons the sound and feel of such a distant and specific place and time, that it makes you question age or origin. Or at least when done as well as NYC’s Toot Sweet, who play a mean funk-infused cabaret style of pop, quite the drastic change from the 90’s revival everybody’s been talking about.

FREE SHOW Alert: The Offseason in Harvard Square 1/30

Posted on:

Fellow Boston-area blogger Bishop & Rook has been busy the past few months, starting a local media collaboration called Boston Scene Party, and partnering with Sound Lion in Harvard Square to host a series of monthly acoustic concerts. In fact, one of these performances is scheduled to take place on January 30th–how ‘bout that for a convenient coincidence?

Along with a live performance by The Offseason, the sketch artist Louis Roe from Squishy Sandwich Art will be drawing at the show. Still not impressed? There will be free beer (compliments of Bishop & Rook) and The Offseason will have a supply of limited-edition, totally awesome, colored vinyl for sale. Sounds like one heck of a way to say “peace-out” to January.

You can RSVP to this free event here. Music starts at 8PM. All ages.

For more info on The Offseason, check out their Facebook page.
