Long Island punks InCircles caught our attention with their 2013 full-length, ‘Youngblood,’ and – with a brand new EP in the works – it’s safe to say that the twangy trio have no plans on slowing down. They’re on the bill for the upcoming N.Y.C. Punk n’ Roll Festacular! which will take place on January 23rd at Lit Lounge. Also on the bill that night are also other relentless NYC punk acts like Arson Welles, World War IX (WWIX) and Heavy Negatives. WWIX in particular, with their old school punk, have built a reputation for unstoppable debauchery and unrestrained live fun. Check out the track "Jesus Freaks" and keep on punking it the fuck up. – Michael Haskoor
Hello Shark became one of our obsessions last year after learning that frontman Lincoln Halloran had moved from Vermont to Philly. Below is a new track, "Fishing For Bats," which was recorded by Keith Hampson (Power Animal) and Michael Rheinheimer (Attic Abasement). It also features guest vocals from Katie Bennett (Free Cake For Every Creature).
Brooklyn based folk-pop artist Leslie Paris Viking showcases an ironic wit via a series of recently released tracks. With a vocal tone reminiscent of late 70’s/early 80’s troubadour Steve Forbert, Leslie delivers folk that’s “alive on arrival” – once more. “This Machine” presents the sort of thoughtful wordplay any poetry fan can appreciate. Couplets describing the title subject as “A positive action machine” with “no regretting from now on” and being “hellbent on heaven and whatever else you do for fun,” point to the author using metaphor in describing his own feelings. Alternately, “The Greatest Singer In The World” morphs from over-the-top braggadocio to self-doubt. “No one approaches me” eventually becomes “that’s lonely.” Of “all the people on this train, I can’t be the only one who’s unsure of the bargain.” Its basic two chord guitar progression with understated keyboard, guitar and drums accompaniment present what Forbert fronting The Velvet Underground might have sounded like. – Dave Cromwell

The tandem of Katy Otto & Diane Foglizzo fuse as Trophy Wife. Performing this evening at Wolf Cycles, the duo develops a textured sound even though fully capable of kicking down the door at any moment with brute force. As their latest album All the Sides (SRA Records) clearly demonstrates, there is well-formed thoughtfulness behind the message issued via their lyrics and the music that helps deliver it. This combination of pensive melody with tightly woven guitar and percussion creates songs that seem ideal for taking a walk in the open with a slight chill in the air. There is that persistent grunge sound, pace-setting space, clearing percussion and smooth preparatory guitar licks that build anticipation. However, once the moment arrives, Trophy Wife tears through with calculated explosions, blasting your ears with gritty precision. Tonight’s bill also includes the pop-punk of local trio Blowdryer and heavy grunge-oriented tunes of Baltimore’s Big Mouth. Wolf Cycles, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7:30pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Lido Pimienta is known as “Colombian Darling”, she delivers an exotic, collaborative interpretation of music communicating with versatility through, her latest album Color LP. On top of the “pop satanico” genre she experiments her romantic voice on top of electro-beats, analog-synths, Afro- Colombian rhythms and innovative chants. Mueve, gets you moving! Heavy beaten brass, bouncing bass and hip shaking drum beats with pretty pop vocals, the entire track is bumpin! The album is diverse and sways hot and cold, white and black, sharp and fluffy revealing a range of exceptional style. See Lido Pimienta Jan 23th @ Smiling Buddha, an electric time not to be missed!
Michelle is the editor of The Deli KC and plays in bands. She also considers the rhythm section of Admiral of the Red to be her ultimate nemesis.
Dr. Dog will be releasing their first live album, Live at a Flamingo Hotel, on Jan. 13 via Anti- Records. The nineteen-track LP is made up of songs recorded during a twenty-show run in 2014. There wasn’t actually any venue named Flamingo Hotel that they performed at last year. For the band, it represented "a state of mind." You can now stream the entire album over at The Wall Street Journal‘s Speakeasy. (Photo by Louis Kwok)
Flashy indie rock group Jag Sun’s newest single, "Modern Dinosaur", adds flare to their already blooming sound. With solid story telling executed by guitarist Talip Peshkepia, Jon Bradley killin’ it on the drums and Robbie Gullage rippin’ on the bass, the trio puts vintage dinosaurs to rest. Monumental guitar strums and dramatic drum hits bring the song together, sweeping the ground with its infectious melodies. A blissful kind of pop, if you will. – Kayla Hay
Deli Nation,
Our most faithful readers know that January, here at The Deli, is the month of our Year End Polls for Emerging Artists, a painstaking survey we run in each of our local branches to identify all the most promising musical acts across all genres (last year’s result can be found here).
To give this poll more credibility, a good portion of the nominees are picked by a jury of local scene-makers (mostly comprised of venue booking agents) who get to nominate their three favorite local artists of the past year. But to involve all possible artists – even the most unknown, in December we had an open submission form that allowed any act to submit to the poll. These entries were ranked by The Deli’s own branch editors, and this is what this post is about.
Since we always get hundreds of submissions for the NYC year end poll, we organize the open submission results by genre, and this year we’ll start with the ALT ROCK/POWER POP category, two genres that share a rather muscular guitar based sound.
As always, we wish we could let more artists through to the next stage, but unfortunately we have to put a limit to the bands that qualify (we already have too many!). Here we go then:
ALT ROCK/POWER POP
Total submissions in this category: 37
Jurors: Michelle Bacon (Deli KC), Roxy Morrison (Deli Toronto) Paolo De Gregorio (Deli NYC).
Artists Qualified to the next stage (i.e. the Readers’ Poll, starting around 01.15):
1. STRNGRS – 8.33
2. Sons of an Illustrious Father – 8
3. Late Cambrian – 7.83
Honorable Mentions (scores above 6.5) in order of high score:
j and the 9s, Millsted, Courtesy Tier, Kung Fu Crimewave, Sunny Gang, Sepoy, The Freaky Baby Daddies, Kevin McWha Steele, Mind Over Time, Eli Whitney & The Sound Machine, The Como Brothers Band, Mals Totem, Saturday Drive.
Stay tuned for more results, and then for the final poll – this is just the beginning of a month long process!
