We got familiar with avant… orchestral (?) NYC trio You Bred Raptors? a few years ago when we booked them for a CMJ show at the now defunkt Ludlow St. location of the Living Room. The masked musicians play a tense and multi-faceted brand of cello driven post-rock (often indulging in prog-rock moments), which seems to have gotten a little less frantic more reflective in their new album "Grant". Maybe they realized that – since they often busk in the subways – New Yorkers didn’t really need an added cause of stress during their commute? The band has already played two cool gigs in the first week of 2015, including Mercury Lounge on January 3rd and the Manderley Bar (home of the Sleep No More play) last night – probably the most appropriate environment one can think of for a masked band of this kind. Check out track "Ice – Nine" below, and – if you dig – keep an eye on the band’s calednar for upcoming shows.

Les Zombies
The two available songs (aside from some very lo-fi live show recordings) from Les Zombies probably actually were recorded in a garage. Whether that’s true or not, this group unquestionably exemplifies that true garage rock sound from the 90s when weird didn’t always mean avant garde or layered in electronics. A day when pared down drums and bass with lyrics romanticizing day-to-day life in fun, solid indie rock songs was a goddamn real thing happening. There’s much to wonder about Les Zombies, being a group that’s about as emerging as it gets with very little recorded material, but if they can keep encapsulating the halcyon days of garage rock like in “Thunder and Lightning” here, then they’ve really got something neat going on. If nothing else, it’s a welcome way to take your ears back in time a bit.
Kylie Rothfield Releases Video “Like You Should”
Keeping up with our emerging unofficial "In with the New" theme this week, blues chanteuse Kylie Rothfield released this video for her latest single last Tuesday. "Like You Should" unfurls like a a slow-burning missive on bad love, but the chorus is puncuated by one of the most visceral vocalizations that we may hear all year. It comes out of nowhere, and totally makes the song. We love a gal with a good yell. Check out Kylie’s website at www.kylierothfield.com and keep up with her whereabouts on her FB page. -Terra James-Jura
And And And to Release Debut “The Failure” 1.15
Over the last half decade tat Portland’s And And And has been bumping and grinding, they have become the epicenter of a bubbling scene of melodramatic dark-rock bands that make their home in the city’s inner east side. However, due to family troubles and self-admitted depression bogging down frontman Nathan Baumgartner, the band only managed to release two EPs and a few singles over the last five years. Though they still managed to earn themselves the title of Best New Band in 2011 by the Willamette Week, and are some of the most diversely active and friendly menbers of the local music community as a whole.
Alas, these Portland staples are finally ready to unveil their long awaited debut full lenth. Out on Party Damage Records, And And And will celebrate release of The Failure on January 15 at Doug Fir with the support of Hosannas and Ah God. But for now, wet your whistle on their brand new, silly ass hobo-fest of a video for the album’s first single, "A Real Case of the Blues."

Johnny Showcase Brings the Heat at WCL Jan. 7
Let Johnny Showcase warm you up tonight upstairs at World Café Live. The twisted funk-soul ensemble brings the heat with their down-to-get-down vibe. Whether it’s a thick bass/keys-driving jam that demands hip shaking with slick slices of guitar and soulful vocals or a sultry serenade that ushers in a close and personal situation, the effects are apparent. The group rides the multi-faceted groove for all its worth, turning any room into an inviting familiar environment by melting down the barriers as they musically crank up the thermostat. Tonight also features Los Angeles-based dark operatic outfit Timur and the Dime Museum. World Café Live (Upstairs), 3025 Chestnut St., 8pm, $15, All Ages – Michael Colavita

The Deli’s Staff
A Brooklyn based super Rock’n’Roll group is born: Beech Creeps
When a band features Ron Llave (the only human to be featured twice on the cover of The Deli with indie dance collective People Get Ready and electro-world-beaters Yeasayer), PP Coolata (of mathy spazz-rockers Ex Models and stoner krautpunks Knyfe Hyts) and Yuka Mofongo (bassman for Doug Gillard and defunkt Deli darlings, Pterodactyl) you can certainly expect great things. The trio just debuted this garagey – and rather droney – single from their upcoming debut album, to be released on March 3rd. No live shows announced, but we expect fireworks from these guys in a live settings.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best punk/garage songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
New Music Video: “You and Me” – Seagulls
You kind of have to love a band willing to take physical abuse for the sake of art. Above is a picture of the aftermath from Seagulls‘ new music video (directed by Doug Zajaczkowski) for the wonderful track "You and Me," off their debut LP Great Pine. The album is getting re-released on February 3 via Yellow K Records, and you can catch Seagulls live at the label’s showcase on January 30 at Bourbon & Branch.
Braintapes, “Sophia”
Seeing as we are still in the single digits of 2015, it seems appropriate to focus on some brand new local talent. Braintapes released this single along with the announcement of an upcoming EP back in December. "Sophia" drifts on some definite jazz stylings, but there’s enough post-everything angst to keep it anchored and focused. It’s an interesting listen (and we’re sure there are some music theory manipulations that are escaping our comprehension,) and we’re looking forward to hearing how the rest of the EP turns out. This Braintape’s first single, and to drive home how fresh they are, the band are still virgins to a Nashville stage. That’s all going to change on January 8th, when they play their first show in town at The End, along with The Hart Strings, Devin Dawson and Jake Vroom. Seeing at the show is only $5, there’s every reason to head out and welcome Braintapes into the fold. -Terra James-Jura
