Indie-pop quartet Literature stopped by Saltlands Studios in Brooklyn (DUMBO) this past fall while at CMJ Music Marathon. They recorded a session for Break Thru Radio’s Live Studio series, and answered questions with its host Maia McDonald. You can check it out below, which includes performances of "Paint It Blue," "The English Soft Hearts," and "Jimmy."
Mouth Reader at Phat Bites Deli 1.10
Garage stalwarts Mouth Reader just released this video for "Melt," that pays as much homage to hallucinogens as it does the sacred tradition of the liquid light show. The duo have been kicking up dust around the state after the November release of the 4-track EP by the same name, and have returned from a 6-show run through Texas, Louisiana and Georgia. They’re letting Nashville know they’re back with a show this Saturday at Phat Bites Deli with Ebony Eyes and Heinous Orca. Check out the show and see if there’s any chance they have just one more of these gorgeous 7"s squirreled away. -Terra James-Jura
Tragic Folk Rock from Portland, ME: Tall Horse
Every year, so much amazing new music is released, and there just isn’t enough time to catch it all. An intriguing record we found in our digital submissions is Tall Horse’s Ep “Glue.” The Portland, Main trio plays a brand of introspective alt folk-rock that’s at once imaginative and suspenseful. The record starts off with the stand out track “Sour,” some kind of bitter anthem that mixes a spacious and borderline epic electric sound with the band’s recurring Americana influences. Heavy and cathartic, the song puts us in a good headspace for the second track, “Old Gun Shot,” a more traditional folk ballad, except in the rather paradoxical, bleak lyrics. There’s never really an upper on the EP, but who needs that anyway if the music is consistently good. It’s really solid and tragic song writing, and if you are strong enough to deal with that, chances are you will enjoy this record. – Paul Jordan Talbot

Rainbow Girls The Hot Toddies The She’s and Kendra McKinley Play the Fillmore – 1/31
An all-female Bay Area based line up will be supporting Santa Barbara’s Rainbow Girls at the Fillmore in San Francisco on January 31st. For the first time, the Fillmore will host a line up of all women led bands. The Oakland based surf pop band The Hot Toddies along with San Francisco’s leading riot grrrl rock ensenble, The She’s and the Bay Area based singer/songwriter, Kendra McKinley will be taking over the venue while playing their ecclectic styles of music.
It’s great to see that there’s always something groundbreaking going on in the local music scene. You can’t say you’ll ever be bored on a random night in the Bay Area. Make sure you go out and support these hardworking bands!
OSɨRɨS Will Put Your Head in the Stars
OSɨRɨS is gonna be a big name outta the ATX producer scene, there’s not much question about that. A part of that wave of global-quality beat makers that we’ve been seeing down here in the recent years, OSɨRɨS productions are at once dense and perfectly balanced, the type of tracks you want big headphones and a long train ride to dive all the way into. This track in particular uses the famous “Son of the morning” sample from Max Romeo & The Upsetters’ “I Chase the Devil” and drops it into layers of spaced-out, warm-synth goodness. In that same vein OSɨRɨS recently Tweeted, “I’ve come to terms w/ the fact that I may never physically see space, but I’d like to think music can take me there,” and with “Sun of the Morning,” we think OSɨRɨS has nailed that feel. We hear an album should be on the way as well, so whet your spacefarin’ appetite with this one and get ready for more from one of ATX’s best and brightest.

Stone Cold Fox plays Rough Trade on 01.15 + unveils DIY video for “Sold”
Brooklyn’s Stone Cold Fox founding members are from various states ranging from the West to the East Coast, but reconvened in Brooklyn to hash out their debut LP ‘Memory Palace,’ released in the spring of 2014. The band’s tone is reminiscent of a Strokes meets Skaters vibe, although they happen to blend a few more influences into their melting pot including an electro-indie rock energy. They will be playing Rough Trade Thursday 1/15 with Gospels and Lazercake, and for the occasion they released this rather ridicolous DIY video of single "Sold." – Robert Frezza

Spaceship Aloha Shielding Your Mind From the Outdoors at JB’s Jan. 8
A non-stop onslaught of exotic island-flavored electronics, beats, and percussion are certain to lively up almost any situation. While music may not technically transport your body, it will temporarily shield your mind from the outdoors, rousing you to your feet in the process. The captain steering this dance-centric vessel, otherwise known as Spaceship Aloha, is Christopher Sean Powell (Man Man). Once your onboard, it may be difficult to pry yourself away from the energy-loaded omnipresent beats, with their light, effervescent grooves that keep spinning out anew. Tonight, a fellow member of the Data Garden collective, Telequanta, the experimental EDM moniker of J. Termini, opens the dance-generating spectacle. The eclectically smooth-flowing, humorously-flared work of Tim Fite connects the situation on this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

NYC Femme Fatale Alert! Fiona Silver
We are aware that the label "Femme Fatale" may sound chauvinistic to some, but when a lady enters the stage like this (skip to second 0.28 if you are in a hurry), we think the title is not only deserved but actually pursued. Okay, okay we’ll issue a "Homme Fatale" alert soon, promise! The lady we are referring to is New York born Fiona Silver, a singer songwriter (and model, in case you wondered) that plays a gentle brand of rootsy pop. We like this single "Medicine Man" but we’ll admit that the chorus’s caloric content (i.e. sugar) is dangerously high for our musical metabolism. We’ll have to burn off those sonic calories one way or another.
