A great local line up has been put together for tonight’s show at Rickshaw Stop. O (formally known as Black Cobra Vipers) will be headlining the show with critically acclaimed local bands, Annie Girl & the Flight and Balms. These bands are a few of the cream of crop in the Bay Area music scene. We’re excited to highlight this show because we’ve been listening to and watching these bands grow for some time.
The Harmaleighs “Doll Made of Glass”
The Harmaleighs are a duo consiting of Haylee and Kaylee, who found each other when they were Belmont students and have been making sharp, smart folk that can switch from coffeehouse to arena in a heartbeat ever since. The two cover topics familiar to gals in their early twenties: love, loss, hometowns. Plug it in and speed it up, and their tunes could hang with any early-aughts emo band. Luckily these two are blessed with a sense of humor, evident in their sweetly awkward stage banter, and a few clever turns of phrase peppering their lyrics that extends all the way to the name of their upcoming album (out February 3rd): "Pretty Pictures, Dirty Brush." The pair released "Doll Made of Glass," the second single off the album in December. The Harmaleighs are heading out to Telluride this weekend and embarking on a tour shortly thereafter. Check out their full schedule and keep updated on the pair at www.theharmaleighs.com. -Terra James-Jura
Seryn Album Release Show at The High Watt 2.12
Seryn was the headlining act for this Sofar Sounds gig last Tuesday. The band had made the strategic move from Denton, TX to Nashville just this October, with the mind of finding a more centrally located jumping off point for touring and a more receptive environment for their music. At six members strong, the band channels their high energy into bouyant folk-pop with male-female vocals and an arsenal of stringed instruments. Their handle on dynamics are mind-boggling at times, especially in a live, acoustic setting where every hush was brought into immedate relief. They sing like a gang of rogue, banjo-toting angels.
Seryn is preparing for the release of their second full-length album "Shadow Shows" on February 17th. Their release show will be at The High Watt on February 12th with Red Headed Indian. Tickets are available here, and the album is available for pre-order here. Check out the show and give Seryn a proper Nashville welcome (which is a basket of hot chicken and Goo Goo Clusters, if we recall correctly.) -Terra James-Jura
New Video: “Nothing Wild” (Space Jam Sessions) – Amanda X
For those headed to Johnny Brenda’s this evening to catch Amanda X and The Vaselines, the following video may wet your appetite. This new stripped-down Space Jam Sessions features two-thirds of the power trio Amanda X (Cat Park on guitar and Kat Bean on bass) performing “Nothing Wild,” off their album Amnesia. Without drummer Tiff Yoon, the song takes on a smooth, less gritty, intimate vibe bringing the vocals to the forefront.
Video for Reve’s “Agency and Accountability”
Rêve, the Baltimore band once known as Playground Etiquette, have released a new video in advance of the remixing/mastering and partial re-recording of their album La Marionnette. On the heals of their The Joanne Sessions EP, recorded at the Joanne Trattoria in NYC, Rêve improves upon Playground Etiquette with more (somehow) shine and professionalism. "Agency and Accountability" demonstrates a great level of polish and improvement to the sound of a song that already had a solid sound. It’s exciting to see a band, which already put so much effort and talent into everything they do, take it to the next level. Also, the video is kinda creepy, which is always good. –Natan Press

New Video: “Miles On High” (Tiny Desk Edition) – Levee Drivers
This previous unreleased song "Miles On End" serves as the Levee Drivers‘ entry in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest, sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Company. Filmed by Bob Sweeney, the song has that dark, on-the-run feel. August Lutz’s baritone takes on a serious tone as the roll and tumble backend pushes it through and the lap steel guitar warmly whines. Along with a "Tiny Desk Concert," the winner will also perform at the Lagunitas "CouchTrippin’ to Austin" showcase in March.
Best of NYC 2014 – Open Submission Results for FOLK/AMERICANA
We continue in our quest to highlight the best emerging NYC artists (i.e. The Deli’s Best of NYC 2014 Poll) with the publication of the winners of the Open Submission results for the FOLK/AMERICANA category – see here for links to the other results organized by city and genre.
Things get really tricky when ranking artists who play roots music, because the average level of musicianship in these genres (as opposed to – say – garage rock) is truly noteworthy. We tried to reward artists with a personal voice and solid fundamentals, even though we’ll admit that many of the bands in this list should have submitted to the "Alt Folk" category – whose results we haven’t published yet.
Total submissions in this category: 20
Artists qualified to the next stage (i.e. the Readers’ Poll, starting around 01.20):
1. Cricket Tell the Weather – 8 (out of 10)
—
2. Jason Howell – 7.66

Honorable Mentions (score above 7)
Lunifred Benjamin, Maynard and the Musties, Lorraine Leckie and her Demons, Bill Scorzari, Ocean Music, Joe Marson, The Hunting Party.
More results on their way, enjoy this rootsiness and check back for more new music from the Big Apple.

JoJo Worthington @ Homegrown
No stranger to the stage, or The Deli, Jojo Worthington is a dynamic delight; a breath of fresh air in the ever-saturated AltFolk scene. This little lady is gearing up to let the world witness her enchanting creations, with the release of her full-length album “7”. If you haven’t already gotten the chance, listen to “Amadeus”; it’s an upbeat treat not to pass over. The song relies on simplicity; from the straightforward ukulele rhythm you hear at the start, to the way Jojo’s candy sweet voice floats over the entire song. She stays true to her witty songwriting roots with this one; the lyrics are both intriguing and ironically humorous, at one point, amusingly boasting "The headlines scream the death of Amadeus" after almost-regretfully reminiscing about a better time. Her music remains consistent; bouncy and catchy as she positively succeeds in keeping you hooked until the last note! “Amadeus” will be stuck in your head, leaving you singing the memorable chorus and title for days. This quirky, pink-haired darling is "drooling with excitement" to share with you all! Over the next few days she’ll be embarking on a four-city CD release tour. You can grab a copy of "7" and watch her perform Jan16 @ Homegrown Hamilton and Jan 18 @ The Smiling Buddha. -Courtney Chalapenko
Wyland releases singles from upcoming LP + plays Leftfield on 01.24
With the just recently released singles “Shine” and "Wait" (streaming) under their belt, New Jersey rockers, Wyland, are slowly finding their voice and audience in the NYC and NJ scene (that’s where they live) – and beyond. Their sound – an intense and tasteful melodic rock with rootsy elements – will resonate with the most endearing Lumineer fan. Their upcoming album, “You’re in the World, Get Off Your Feet”, which is due out in February, is a self-produced, intimate glimpse of the hard working band, which includes emotional lyrical content that might make Chris Martin shed a tear. Wyland will be playing Leftfield on the Lower East Side on January 24 and will have a featured spot on Jansport’s Culture Collide Battle of the Bands at this year’s SXSW. – Robert Frezza
Gabriel Mayers’ NYC Subway Folk
Sadly, these days, busking in the subways (or outdoors in the warmer months) is one of the few reliable ways left for musicians to make some money through their music. While busking with a group of fellow musicians can be fun, doing it by alone isn’t easy, and requires a lot of self discipline and self confidence; but it can be an excellent training ground: busking is like being on stage for a whole day, with a constantly changing (and therefore unbiased) audience; it’s an opportunity for a prolonged trial and error session that, over time, can potentially reveal many important secrets related to entertaining a crowd: "how does the average person react to each of my songs?" "What is the mood, or lyric, or body language that triggers a response?" "What gets the travelers to drop their cash in the hat?"
Today we saw Gabriel Mayers busking at our local subway station, and – even just for a minute or so – we enjoyed his understated folk songs. It turns out the guy embraces the NYC subway experience entirely, by recording in it, and allowing train and announcement noises to randomly enter his tracks. Check out his latest single "Sixty Charisma Scented Blackbirds" – and the NYC subway noises that come with it.
