Posted on:

WXPN and The Key host another edition of their free Fireside Sessions along the Delaware River Waterfront tonight. From channeling his best Bill Withers through soulful singing to laying down sultry blues guitar riffs, Son Little knows what its like to bring the heat. And his latest EP Things I Forgot gained ears for brilliantly crossing multiple genres. He’ll be joined by folk pop trio Dirty Dollhouse, who have been impressing with their whimsical debut 25 Shades and stunning vocals provided by songwriter Chelsea Mitchell, Amber Twait, and Vanessa Winters of The Lawsuits. It’s a good night to get cozy and intimate by a fire. Blue Cross Riverrink, Market St. at Columbus Blvd., 8pm, FREE, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Annabelle Chairlegs is Dreamy, Lo-Fi and Has an Axe

Posted on:

Annabelle Chairlegs‘ music and video for track "Axe Me If I Care" is all dreamed-out California sunsoaked indie pop. Lead wailer Lindsey Mackin’s voice and look are like someone took a hair off Valley Girl-era Bonnie Hayes’ punk/pop head (not, to be clear, pop punk) and did mad music science to spit out a new creature that had Hayes’ gripping vocal abilities, but was a bit more hippy-ish. In fact, if it weren’t for the punklike edge in Mackin’s voice and the pared down drum sound, Annabelle Chairlegs tracks sound nearly straight out of the 60s. Throw that punk twist on it, and drop a little bit of 90s alt rock jangle, and it’s workin’ for me. These guys are raw and rough, but the potential is there for this band to go big places.

Annabelle Chairlegs have an album in the works and are about to get their young asses on the road for a tour that kicks off on January 28 at Cheer Up Charlies downtown with ILEZO, Cucumber & The Suntans, Who & The Fucks. Get there, and get gaudy with these kids.

Weekend Warrior, January 16 – 18

Posted on:
In honor of his 5th anniversary of living in Philly, the promoter behind End Result Productions and Philly DIY Shows, Nick Duval, has organized a two-day festival, Blistering Ephemera, that features his favorite experimental rock and punk acts converging upon PhilaMOCA for one jam-packed weekend. It will feature buzz-worthy out of town acts like Two Inch Astronaut, Big Ups, Palberta, and Nashoba, as well as plenty of hometown heroes. On Saturday Pinkwash will electrify with their soul-pounding power punk, and Disinterest will crush with their raw and visceral hardcore. Sunday will be headlined by Andy Molholt and the rest of Laser Background, who are preparing a big tour in support of their upcoming EP Kelly Wisdom. Meanwhile, The Spirit of the Beehive will showcase exactly why they’re rapidly becoming one of bands to watch in 2015. And Space Drugs will be quick to impress with their noisy garage rock. With 20 eclectic acts total on the lineup, this is definitely a festival to catch on both days. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 3pm, $10-$12 each day, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Brooklyn’s Wild Pink reveal debut EP, “2 Songs” + lands Pianos residency

Posted on:

Brooklyn power trio Wild Pink just released their debut EP "2 song" (a not very "E" EP, since the original meaning of the acronym is "Extended Play") featuring two rather angular and bony power pop tracks in part reminiscent of that well of dark songwriting ideas that is Robert Pollard’s Guided By Voices. The band has a series of shows scheduled in the immediate future, the first one at Pianos on January 22 within a three week residency.

Brooklyn’s Darlings celebrate LP “Feel Better” at Baby’s All Right on 01.21

Posted on:

In 2012, with debut EP "Pet the Ghost," followed suit by full album "Perfect Trip," Brooklyn quartet Darlings kind of anticipated the 90’s slacker rock revival that hit NYC a few years later. We say kind of because these guys’ slacking feels moderate compared to – say – early Total Slacker, another, obviously self aware, pioneer of that same revival. The name itself betrays Darlings don’t really slack to a fault, and the new album "Feel Better" fully confirms this identity. Their songs proceed lethargically from hook to hook, without ever raising the voice or the tension level, obviously also influenced by Brooklyn’s own chill pop wave, which after all – now that we think about it – could very well be slacker rock’s cleaner, dreamier (and cuter) sister. What’s remarkable though about Darlings, is that these guys never really let you down: all the songs in "Feel Better" are equally enjoyable, which is a rare treat. NYC fans of the genre have an opportunity to get familiar with them when they celebrate the album’s release at Baby’s All Right on January 21.

Gorgeous Porch Lands at The Fire Jan. 16

Posted on:

What can Gorgeous Porch, a.k.a. Christopher Wood (Grimace Federation, Orbit To Leslie), create with a Casio and some percussion? Well, the answer isn’t quite as simple as the question. It’s universally danceable songs with an omnipresent bobbing percussive beat and vocals that are softly spoken, retaining a sacred air. Sometimes those vocals lay in the back allowing the enthusiastic bounce to set the tone, tempering the friction with its cooling touch affects. However, at other times, the vocals feed off the momentum the instruments establish, steering the ship so to speak. Tonight, that ship lands at The Fire, where it fits nicely on bill that also features the groove-centric electronic experimentations of Willow Talk, taking the familiar and flipping it on its head so you hear it from a new perspective. Then, there’s qqq, whose electro-synth combinations seem to grab hold, leading you through an unlit threshold to a place where the music triggers movement. Brooklyn’s Goste completes a lineup geared to get you on your feet by pushing the envelope. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $8, 21+ (Photo by Bob Cahill) – Michael Colavita

Captain Scurvy and the S.S. Pancake Birthday Show at KFN Jan. 16

Posted on:
Whether it’s been through directing and shooting music videos for the likes of Shorty boy-boy and Boy Pierce or by taking part in and photographing various music events throughout Philly, Jonathan Applebaum is someone who has significantly contributed to the city’s music scene. But when he’s not behind the camera, he has also collaborated on some hilarious nautical pirate ballads as a part of Captain Scurvy and the S.S. Pancake. In honor of his 30th birthday, the pirate crew will take a break from looting and plundering the landlubbers to throw a celebration that will also feature some of Applebaum’s friends. The new collaboration between Joe Reno of Southwark and Jeremy Blessing of The Great Vibration, Soldiers of Soul will deliver some guitar-fueled blues rock, and Shy Boyz will showcase their comedic hip-hop stylings. The lineup will be rounded out by Dirty Soap Blues Band. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Album review: The Sexy Accident – Lavender 3

Posted on:

Jesse Kates writes smart, romantic pop songs. Their literary quality comes naturally, considering he studied creative writing at Carnegie-Mellon University. He also has a background in visual arts and is married to an artist. Considering all that, the idea of releasing an album and a book as a multimedia experience seems pretty natural.

Lavender 3, the fifth album by Kansas City band The Sexy Accident, is an unusual concept among local releases. Instead of a physical CD, it’s a hardback book packaged with a download code. To someone who—like me—used to get lost in album art while listening to records, Lavender 3 takes the experience up a notch. Individual song lyrics are paired on facing pages with images by eight artists. The book begins with an introduction by W.E. Leathem (proprietor of Prospero’s Books, a frequent venue for Kates and company). In addition to the lyrics and art, there is an interview by The Deli editor (and bassist) Michelle Bacon, The Sexy Accident bassist Mark Hamblin and his long-time bassist father, Don Hamblin. It’s about bass. The book concludes with the transcript of a thoroughly entertaining interview between KKFI 90.1 FM DJ Mark Manning, Kates, and producer Steve Fisk.

Lavender 3 is is Fisk’s third full-length collaboration with The Sexy Accident. Based in Seattle, he has also produced The Wedding Present, Low, and Nirvana, among many others. The album was tracked in 9 days at Kansas City’s Westend Recording Studios, mostly with the full band playing their parts live. As Kates says, “There’s a certain energy you get when it’s people playing in a room.” The band rehearsed for several months before going to the studio, and their work shows. The arrangements are lush, adventurous and tight, propelling Kates’ frequently witty wordplay to the forefront. Besides the five members of the band and Fisk, who plays an organ solo near the epic ending of “Let’s Play,” Laurel Parks and Sascha Groshang (who sometimes perform as The Wires) added violin and cello. Other guests include Kates’ college professor Jim Daniels, who recites one of his poems as a prelude to “You Turn My Breath To Steam,” and Sean Nelson of Seattle band Harvey Danger.

No discussion of The Sexy Accident is complete without mentioning vocalist/keyboardist Camry Ivory. Over the last 5 years she has blossomed as a singer and onstage presence, and Kates says he enjoys writing songs for her to sing. “I really like being able to play with two characters in a song, in a duet. It gives you a chance to call the narrator on his bullshit or to have them play together. It’s been so much fun to be able to sometimes write from the point of view of a woman.” Ivory’s voice provides some of the loveliest moments on the album, as in “Gracefully,” a song about ending a doomed relationship.

Time passes and things change. Ivory, in search of new challenges, has moved on to other projects. Drummer Daniel Torrence has also left the band, replaced by Alex Austyn. The splits are amicable, a more or less inevitable result of outside pressures pulling band members in different directions without financial rewards to push them back together. But Kates is philosophical about it. “I know my band is not a business, because in business you give your customers what they want [laughs]. And I don’t care. I do try to make it something that people would enjoy, but at the end of the day I make music I want to listen to.”

If you’re looking for maximum-volume, testosterone-fueled doom and gloom, there are plenty of bands to provide it. Lavender 3 is more of a gentle interlude, maybe a rainy afternoon companion for browsing lyrics and images. “In some ways, this is our most feminine record,” Kates says, possibly because so many women were integral to the project. In any case, it’s their strongest effort yet. With every album, Kates’ voice, both singing and in the narrative sense, gets stronger and better defined. Lavender 3 is a mature effort in a unique package.

The Sexy Accident will be performing a free, all-ages dinner show at recordBar tomorrow, Friday, January 16. The Hillary Watts Riot will open up the show at 7 pm. Facebook event page.

Show Alert: Tetherball’s “Fiesta Party” 1.17 at The High Watt

Posted on:

The Fiesta Party is one of those events that gets better and better the deeper you go. Salsa dancing lessons, a taco bar, and a MF-ing pinata in the High Watt? The real question this raises is why is this not happening every night? The evening makes more sense when it becomes clear that Steve Voss of Tetherball is behind the madness, which also explains the killer lineup of The Gills, Charlie Whitten and recent addition Bear in the Campsite. Between contributing to the Monster Bash blowout over Halloween and this hoedown on Saturday, Voss is starting to display a proclivity for curating entire experiences, and has hinted that this is not the last themed show of his design.  Tetherball continbues this spirit of head-scratching fun by reinterpreting their own album "Whimsy" with jazz outfit Hot Club Time Machine, and releasing the session as "Gypsy Jazzivore." Watch this video of a trippy cover of a song about absinthe hallucinations below. It’s kind of meta.

Fiesta Party kicks off at 7pm at The High Watt this Saturday, January 17th. $7 bucks gets you admission, a salsa dancing lesson, pinata swings and all the tacos you can eat. Tickets are available HERE. -Terra James-Jura
