Weekly Feature: Salt Cathedral

Posted on:

Salt Cathedral’s latest EP, "Oom Velt," is a richly textured, futuristic affair. Made up of swirly, intertwined parts, close inspection reveals an openness to symmetry too. At its heart, each song is centered around the breathless vocals of Juliana Ronderos, who shape-shifts as she mesmerizes. We chatted up drummer Tommy Hartman recently, who brought us up to speed on how the band got their sound.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow pop songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

BLKKATHY lands Pianos residency, starting on 12.30

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s duo BLKKATHY inserts itself in the tradition of moody, psych and DIY influenced soul music coined by TV on the Radio’s first EP, and takes it to an extreme level of introversion and self-absorption – qualities that almost fight with the nature of this genre. In their most popular single "Dem Bones" (streaming) Kate Faust sounds as if she was singing to herself, without an audience, mumbling about some skinny girl who’s taller than her: "I can see why you don’t want me, she’s so skinny…". The melody is almost just a draft, but catchy nonetheless, and the minimal electronic arrangement perfectly complements her whispers. The duo has caught the attention of the talent scouts at Pianos, who booked them for a three week residency starting on December 30.

Glass Elephant unveils video for “Toledo” from new self-titled EP

Posted on:

For those who, like us, enjoy the power of emotions but cannot be asked to sit through two hours of a romantic drama (unless it’s a British recreation of a novel by Jane Austen), this new video for "Toledo" by Brooklyn’s Glass Elephant might work as a concentrated, extremely well executed, 4 minutes shot of cathartic and sob-inducing love-related rollercoaster. It’s got all the essential soul stirring qualities of a Hollywood flick without the unnecessary baggage, thanks to Russ Flynn’s tormented lyrics and the band’s evocative music, that team up to exude longing and describe the often unresolvable complications of love. The video’s beatiful imagery greatly contributes to magnify these emotions, emplyoing at times the overlapping images technique borrowed from TV series’ True Detective stunning intro. Check out the Glass Elephant’s new, self-titled EP here.

New Track: “American Christmas, Idiot” – Mike Bell & the Movies

Posted on:

With Christmas on the horizon, it’s good to see artists donating their talents to raise money for good causes. Mike Bell & the Movies recently shared a pop-punk tune called "American Christmas, Idiot," and will donate proceeds from its sales to Rock to the Future, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides free music education for under served Philadelphia youth. They’ll also be ringing in the New Year at DIY concert space/batting cages Everybody Hits alongside The Spirit and the Beehive.

Show Alert: Them Vibes, Super Shaker, and Slowriter at The East Room 12.22

Posted on:

Whether you’re leaving town in a few days or about to have an unwanted houseful of relatives, take advantage of your f*cked-up holiday schedule by treating Monday like a Friday and taking yourself out to see some music. The East Room has a great lineup for such an off night, consiting of some local faves, up-and-comers, and out-of-towners. Its also budget-friendly at $5. The show starts at 8pm, and is 18+.

Them Vibes:

It’s no secret that the Deli Nashville loves Them Vibes, who have always proven capable of bringing some down and dirty rock and roll to any situation, and countering it with some down-home rootsiness. We’ve been digging the level of quality in their recent video for "Lorelei."

Super Shaker:

We posted about their single "Kong" a few months ago, and then chanced upon them last Wednesday at the Tin Roof, and were blown away. While "Kong" might conjure visoins of some rigid nerd rockers poking at keyboards, Super Shaker kicked our expectations in the face with their high-energy onslaught of gritty, post-punk electronica. These boys can put on a SHOW.

 Slowwriter:

Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Bryan Taylor and a rotating cast of friends operates under the title of Slowriter. He coaxes out interesting loops with a hip-hop sense of direction, and branding them with his particular quirk and earnesty. "King of the Void" is the title track of his recent 2014 release.

Toronto band on the rise: WEAVES

Weaves are some funky yummy alphabet soup! An original blend of weird lo-fi hip-pop grunge, a taste we just love! Check out their recipe for “Buttercup” off their latest EP, it’s fantastic! The track lures you in with badass lo-fi vocals, creating an amazing sound that jabbers back and forth to the guitar, drums and bass.  From the first taste of Buttercup I was hooked, so I ate the whole thing and now I just want seconds. The entire EP is an exotic mixture of spice and sound that you must try! Stay tuned in for upcoming shows in the New Year.

The multi-faceted musician has recently collaborated with his father, Radji Mateen Sr., who is a seasoned saxophonist that has worked with the likes of Kindred Family Soul, Dice Raw, and Snoop Dog, to rework his song Thinking About You. Louds Opening for Cheerleader & Dream Safari at JB’s Dec. 20

Posted on:

Starting as a familiar collaboration between brothers Pete & Charlie Brooks and growing to incorporate friends within the artistic community, Louds has set the bar relatively high with their single “Ways,” a highly contagious electronic blast of loose, fun energy. With its free-flowing iridescent tones meshing with clear augmenting lyrics and a constant danceable groove, the song is a promising first step as they work on their EP If More People Bought Art, More People Would Buy Art. Tonight, Louds opens the evening of performances at Johnny Brenda’s, which also features the inviting jungle-vibed electronic blend of synth/keys and percussion of Dream Safari, a.k.a. Chris Coulton, shining a steady luminosity in which movement proliferates. The vibrant, joy evoking tunes of Cheerleader will headline this bill of locals. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9:15pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Teen Girl Scientist Monthly plays Rockwood on 01.03

Posted on:

NYC’s Teen Girl Scientist Monthly coined a new genre to describe their upbeat, energetic music: "pop stomp" (why not "stomp pop"? It sounds better…) Here at The Deli we are fans of the band’s fast paced pick-me-up single “Summer Skin”, which feels like a well needed shot of unpretentious rock’n’roll, something kind of rare in our tense and often angry rock scene. The Brooklyn band has a super fun live show that has the potential to get even the laziest of humans out of their seats for some frantic dancing. That’s why they are asked to play Rockwood Music Hall on a Saturday – in this case January 3, 2015. – Robert Frezza

Weekend Warrior, December 19 – 21

Posted on:
Tonight at Underground Arts will be an artist statement of sorts for Chipocrite, who is celebrating the release of his debut LP Wordplay, a culmination of years of writing, reworking, and evolving songs into the sound imagined when he began making chiptune music. The result is an expansive experience and a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy. It is an aggressive and playful album at the intersection of Chipocrite’s progressive rock roots and 8-bit infatuation. The album is a long time coming, with certain songs dating back to his previous band MJ Project, so it is fitting that his old band members will be joining him on this evening’s bill. The new project, The Blurry Nights, makes tight, proggy gems with intricate guitar leads and tasty synthesizer licks. Also, recently announced was a MJ Project mini-reunion before Chipocrite’s set, something that he had hinted at and probably won’t happen again. Making the long journey from Amaris (that is a planet) to join them tonight is Chronicles of Sound, a cosmic rock band on a life threatening and altering mission to overthrow god-emperor Drekin and discover “The Sound.” Good friend, collaborator and past bandmate Daniel Davis, a.k.a. An0va, is opening the festivities, Philly’s Enerjawn will be handling visuals for the evening.  Come by and enjoy the celebration of new music and old friends!
