Below is a track from Trophy Wife called "It Comes in Waves… (Neil Young)," off their album all the sides. It may be a surpise to those have been following the duo’s catalogue. The song is a 7-minute mostly instrumental jam with a mantra of "Once beat strong/Beat again"; however, it still keeps the band’s signature intensity, which is generated by Diane Foglizzo’s searing electric guitar and Katy Otto’s in sync pummeling of her kit – only with spaces to breathe to take it all in.
Five Bay Area NYE Parties to Suit Your Needs
One of the most important things an editor should be able to do is understand their readers. I’m not a psychic or anything, but I do realize that even though people may agree on their fave music blogs, everyone is essentially unique. If you have a good idea of what environment you might enjoy the most on New Year’s Eve, here are some options that will hopefully be a good fit for your individual party needs.

If You Want Something Normal – City Hall – SF
You can always go right downtown to City Hall in San Francisco and bring in the New Year with a bunch of enthusiastic strangers. Think about it, you don’t have to have a date, you can meet up with a group of friends and meet new people while you’re celebrating at a mass outdoors event. It’s free, it’s fun and you can bring your grandmother whose in town and really old. It’s family friendly so you won’t have to worry about leaving her alone to go out and get wasted.
If You Want Something Kinky – The Amory – SF
You can go party at the place where they shoot hardcore BDSM porn for Kink.com. If you’re looking to get into some dirty trouble, you should attend the massive NYE party, hosted by Vau de Vire, Opel Productions & Kink.com. The party will include internationally known DJ’s, a Kink.com VIP Lounge and a number of provocative performance spectacles. At the very least, I can pretty much guarentee you’ll see breats…if that’s what you’re into, enjoy!
If You Want Something Familiar – The Milk Bar – SF
If you don’t want a lot of pressure on NYE, you can grab a drink and check out some live rock and roll at The Milk Bar. The door is affordable and if you’re a part of the local music and arts scene, there is a very good chance you’re going to run into at least one person you know. The Milk Bar is the hub for the local scene. Its got a chill vibe and a fun atmosphere.
If You Want Something Artsy – Imagine Affairs Art Lounge – Oakland
If you’re looking for something quiet, a bit classy and out of the way, Imagine Affairs Art Lounge in Oakland will be throwing a party with live music, dinner and champagne. So, you’re in some cheesy relationship where you actually want to cuddle and talk and stuff, this may be the best place for you. It’s ok to want to avoid crying drunk ladies and vomit…it really is.
If You Require a Burger and Beer – Woods Bar and Brewery – Oakland
Woods Bar and Brewery will be providing a burger bar at their NYE party. Yes, you read right. You can eat and be merry while being surrounded by a bunch of micro brews and good times. The evening will also include unlimited beer, wine and empanadas. If you’re a foodie – and don’t care who knows – go there.
Johnnie Lee Jordan hones Rockabilly sound in new single “Candy Mountain”
In LI/Manhattan folkster Johnnie Lee Jordan’s catchy new single, “Candy Mountain,” a simply-stated rhythm guitar overlaps and interweaves a driving drum part and spacy leads The tune is a continuation of a rockabilly sound, rooted in a plethora of influences from the past, and uniquely foreign to his hometown. Reverb and slide-guitar sounds are introduced and overlapped throughout, culminating in a full band chorus, which acts as a climax of catchiness with an old-timey sweetness saying, “Kiss me and say that it’s for free.” I had the pleasure of catching his set (playing as Johnnie Lee Jordan and The Boys) during CMJ, and it was absolutely a highlight of the whole festival. Between their live show and this new single, Johnnie Lee Jordan is not to be missed! – JP Basileo
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Radio Ghost Opening for Cannibal Ox at KFN Dec. 29
Philly crew Radio Ghost can bring the heat when the battle calls for it, but the group still keeps its intensity on more laidback tracks. Made up of producer/emcee Yikes the Zero, Tommy Tucker, E. Grizzly, and O-Severe, they join forces to provide a furious yet cerebral combination on their recordings. Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, Radio Ghost will be opening Cannibal Ox, who are best known for their critically-acclaimed debut album The Cold Vein, which was produced by El-P and was released on his record label Definitive Jux. Unfortunately, after citing creative and financial difference as well as rumors of clinical depression, it was confirmed that Cannibal Ox would never be working with El-P again; however, the duo of Vast Aire and Vordel Mega have finally returned with a new studio album earlier this year entitled Blade of the Ronin so forget that it’s a Monday night and don’t miss this one. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

The Julie Ruin releasing single from THE PUNK SINGER
The Julie Ruin, the new brain baby of now NYC based Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill notoriety), has a track featured on the IFC biopic about Hanna, entitled "THE PUNK SINGER." The song, “Blueberry Island” (streaming) a soft and soothing, tremolo heavy hymn, is quite a far cry from what Kathleen got us used to; she displays here a certain shift (maybe due to the passing of time?), exchanging agitated guitars and outraged shrieks, singing about feminist issues and social change, for much more understated keys and melancholy, yet confident singing and personal, introspective lyricism. THE PUNK SINGER debuted at the SXSW Film Festival last year, but its soundtrack, and an accompanying 7” of “Blueberry Island” has being released recently. – JP Basileo – Photo by Shervin Lainez

Congratulations to Oliver Ocean, Our New Artist of the Month!
Congratulations to Oliver Ocean, our last winner of The Deli Nashville’s Artist of the Month poll for 2014! These boys put up quite a fight, maintaining a neck-and-neck pace with Waterfall Wash for most of the poll, and finally securing a win in the final hours by a narrow margin. It was a fitting end to 2014, considering that the band is closing in on their one-year anniversary. The quartet hit upon their sound last January, after cultivating enough trust in the band’s chemistry to let it roam where it wanted. This lead them to release their "Through the Loop" EP over the summer, which showcased their slightly ambient indie rock guided by jazz and Motown sensibilities. It is an unusual, but wholly organic composite, and we’re excited to see where it takes them in 2015. Oliver Ocean’s next Nashville show is January 23rd at fooBar; check them out! -Terra James-Jura
