Weekend Warrior, December 12 – 14

PhilaMOCA is hosting an out of this world Xmas edition of its Masoleum Party series this Saturday night that will feature electronic music pioneer Charles Cohen providing some interstellar soundscapes. And it will double as the album release party for darkwave/post-punk duo Hot Guts‘ latest Wilds. Ever since Void Vision‘s Shari Vari replaced drummer Greg Frantz in March, the group has been revitalized with more of an eerie synth edge, and their first recording together is as enchanting as it is macabre. The evening will be headlined by local vets Crash Course in Science, who will likely be previewing some tunes from their upcoming album that is currently in the works. The Coyote Kids

Posted on:

The Coyote Kids are an indie rock power-pop band of brothers. They deliver a rhythmically infectious EP “Our Life”. The single “Our Life”  grooves with a smooth pocket, pop vocals and guitars that echo back and forth to each other, creating a memorable narration. The entire EP is wicked! There is something different about a band of brothers, you can hear how tight these guys are, maybe it’s in their DNA! Stay tuned for their upcoming EP “Surf Disco” out this January. Catch them Jan 9th @ the Cavern Bar, can’t wait to hear the new tunes!

Mike Quinn Opening for Quiet Life at MilkBoy Philly Dec. 12

Posted on:

Mike Quinn’s lyrical approach could be considered quirky, since his observations often twist rather than taking a clear path. However, those “odd” decisions create memorable routes, which, coupled with his distinct delivery, has a way of embedding his words in your mind. Instrumentally, it’s familiar enough and reminiscent of a folksy Americana backdrop, with those endearingly inviting open-screen-door tones. However, taking a closer look, those traditional images are slightly warped and out of focus in a surprising revitalized configuration. The overcast folk of The Bailey Hounds fill the middle slot. The foursome continues to emerge with tightly constructed agonizingly endearing tunes that offer a glimpse of light amid the darkness. The night will be headlined by the fresh energy-infused Americana of Quiet Life. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekly Feature: The Skins

Posted on:

The Skins are a Brooklyn based heavy rock and soul outfit consisting of three siblings and two best friends.  Lead vocalist Bayli, bassist Kaya and drummer Reef Mckeithan are joined by two nimble-fingered guitarists, Daisy Spencer and Russell Chell.  They play a thunderously rhythmic rock emphasizing powerful riffs underneath dynamic, clearly defined vocals.  Having already self-released an EP that has garnered them both critical acclaim and positive street buzz from savvy music listeners, the band is hard at work on a full-length album.  Since their initial inception in 2012, the band has toured extensively, impressing audiences at Afro Punk, SWXW and CMJ festivals.

Free Download: “Thinking About You (Rework Feat. Radji Mateen Sr.)” – Khari Mateen

Posted on:

The collaborative pairing of father and son, sax-playing Radji Mateen Sr. and multi-instrumentalist Khari Mateen, is a long-standing endeavor. Their latest, a reworking of “Thinking About You,” is a forward-thrusting, seductively funky song propelled by the percussion/sax interplay, and that sax opens up for a tasty run to boot. You can stream and download the track for free below.

From the Sun TImes’ list of 10 NYC bands you should know: Feral Foster

Posted on:

We stumbled upon this list of "10 NYC artists you should already be listening to" by the Sun Times, and we eagerly checked our coverage records to see our "hit and miss ratio" – a not so grown up version of comparing and trading football stickers, if you wish. Well, 90% ain’t that bad, right? The only artist from the list that wasn’t yet covered in this very blog is Queens based, roots music veteran Feral Foster,  who’s actually been making music for almost ten years. His self titled album, released earlier in 2014, is a collection of passionate vintage blues, straight up folk tunes and crooning ballads that showcase his expressive tenor and a noteworthy versatiliy within the Americana related genres.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best roots songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Show Alert: Kopecky Family Band at Mercy Lounge 12.13

Posted on:

It’s been more than a hot minute since Kopecky Family Band has played a local show. They might have touched base with Nashville all of two times this year. However, we entertain the vision of the crew touring hard across the country and having Wes Anderson-esque misadventures along the way, and, well, we can’t hold anything against them. We just miss ’em is all. Which is why were excite that KFB is playing their last show of the year back in their hood, and debuting some new material off their upcoming 2015 release. There are also some solid guests joining the night: co-parent of Diarrhea Planet Evan P. Donahue will be opening up the show with his chamber-pop psychedelic mash, as well as Austin Manuel’s high lonesome folk. Considering that we’re still finding little gems off 2013’s "Kids Raising Kids," we’re hoping to be overwhelmed at least a few times on Saturday night.  Stay tuned next week for a live review!  -Terra James-Jura
