You know a band really means it when they only post one song! It’s been this way for months, too. To be honest, though, Rosie and the Rosies really shine live. The guitar is louder, the vocals farther to the back, and the passion on her face in full view. Check out one of their shows around Boston.
NYC’s Pants Velour work hard to represent the self-imposed genre of “irreverent hip hop.” It’s a moniker with a broad scope despite its apparent narrow-mindedness, but the band remains undeterred. MCs Josh Raff, Eli Northrup, and Niki Darling hoist a freak flag of such resplendent snark that it’s hard not to get behind (pun intended). In their new video for “Taxidermist” they pop references from Howie Mandel to Handel to Hanson all while preaching to “stuff that beaver – taxidermist.” The beat is perfect for grinding hips or teeth. Bostonians-in-the-know always go to Cambridge’s monthly Cheap Seats event to discover new music, as it never disappoints.
Last month, during a particularly great show, everyone was blown away by a young German woman who sampled and looped her dynamically complex vocals and cathartically banged on keyboard and buckets to create a danceable wall of sound unlike anything else this side of The Velvet Underground’s Factory shows. Standing out among the crowd of greatness there is tough. Catch Tellavision before she moves out of Boston next year.
Brittany Lee Moffit (formerly of LEE) is releasing her debut solo EP, Acceptance. The EP’s first single is called "Summerwind".

Red Martina will be making their live performance debut this evening at MilkBoy Phillly. The combination of Noesis (ex-Philadelphia Slick), Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind (ex-Jedi Mind Tricks), Ish Quintero (ex-Quintero), and Hayley Cass dropped an impressive first album last year entitled Intransit, and tonight they’ll be celebrating the release of its follow-up, Come On Home, a fifteen-track LP that smoothly mixes live and sampled production with Cass’ silky vocals and Noesis verbal gymnastics. They’ll be supported on the bill by Brooklyn four-piece The Attic Ends and and visual artist/emcee Dewey Decibel. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8:30PM, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
In the genre box of their Facebook profile Brooklyn garage rockers The Planes describe themselves as "anti-commercial, indie, DIY" – we should totally add "anti-commercial" to our list of genres here! However, it’s a tough call to be anti-commercial guys, because a small amount of anti-establishment acts who hated the idea of being commercial ended up selling quite a lot of records and touring a lot, and both things belong squarely to the field of… commerce! So, the only way to stay true to that statement would be for The Planes to not charge for records and only play free shows, two things they are actually scheduled to do as soon as tomorrow, when they will be releasing their new EP "Catch You/Milk Maid" at Cake Shop (cover $7). But anyway, this stuff doesn’t matter, what matter is the music, and The Planes have some cool songs that resonate with the slacker hiding in each one of us. We should have a song from the new record for streaming tomorrow, for now you can enjoy this track from last year’s debut album "Echo Forever/Forever Echo."
Mixing equal parts of melancholic down tempo and collective psychedelic acid-pop, Doomsquad is like a dark wave basement rave! Just think the Matrix Reloaded dance scene and wooden wind chime of the Woodland elves. Doomsquad creates an exploratory and psychedelic record “Kalaboogie.” At the albums most passive, percussion leads you through a winding forest path that keeps you wondering what you’ll hear next in the thicket beyond. Then you stumble upon a great bonfire that burns effervescent hues of emerald and amethyst as a great tribe of post-punk cheer and pulsating rhythm. If you’re into Grimes, Bishop Morroco, thumb pianos or meditation, then don’t lose out on getting lost in, “Kalaboogie”. The 2013 Deli Magazine San Francisco Artist of the Year, Down Dirty Shake are finally releasing their debut self titled album! They’re celebrating the release with the San Francisco based orchestral rock band, Battlehooch who is also releasing their new album, WINK. The show is going down at Bottom of the Hill this Saturday, November 22nd.
A special performance by local super group, Kokomo Hum featuring Sean Mabry of Maus Haus and members of Mwahaha, Batttlehooch, White Cloud, and Paint The Trees White will open the show. White Light Prism will be doing visuals as well!
This is going to be a really big show! If you’re going to finish out the year with one major local show, this is the one to attend. Congrats to both bands on their album releases!
NYC’s Wet Leather plays pop the way we like it: super catchy, but tense and edgy at once. The vague Prince influences we detected in "Astral Projection" – opening track of their soon to be released EP "Past Lives" – become more than vague in following track "Stop Me if I’m Doing it Wrong," but hey, every band has its own references and hardly anybody is channeling "His Royal Badness" these days. Also, not many songwriters can come up with timeless melodies like the one propelling the chorus of "Astral Projection" (streaming). The sophisticated but gritty production enhances the dark side of this pop-soul gem through subtle dissonances and suspencefull staccatos – we dig. Check out Wet Leather at Rockwood’s Stage 2 when they celebrate the release of their sophomore EP.
Unfortunately, we already knew this for months now, but Night Panther just officially announced that they have broken up. ("G’night everyone, Night Panther is no longer. Please enjoy our final EP… Thanks for all the memories <3 NP") You can listen to the self-titled album below, which was produced by Jon Low.
San Francisco based garage rock band, Hungry Skinny has released a biker centric, garage rock track called, Hot Dang. This fast paced track is catchy and includes a shout worthy hook that would drag anyone to the dance floor. The band plans to premiere the music video at Amnesia this Saturday, November 22nd.

It’s something about the end of the year months that make you desire nostalgia. Maybe it’s the holiday/family overload or just the fact that another year has drifted pass so quickly. Slomo Drags should be on your soundtrack for nights of red wine and memories. A mix of Big Star and Spoon, their Slomo Drags EP released this past March is indie pop perfect for any decade. Comprised of Jackson Albracht, Raul Alvarez, Adam Mason and Marcus Rubio they know how to package reverb, jangle pop and melancholy vocals into a delightful punch. They play tonight at Red 7 or catch them Dec. 6 at Holy Mountain.
