Smooth electro-soul duo LAVACHILD plays Pianos on 12.02

Posted on:

LAVACHILD is a (mostly) Brooklyn based electronic collaboration between Friends’ (the band) collaborator Nikki Shapiro and soulful singer Chantel Marie. Their ethereal single  "Want U To" (streaming) has the sophisticated lightness of an impressionistic painting, enriched by a voice that’s beautifully expressive. The result is a sound that carves its own niche of influences in the current alt-soul NYC scene, and that will delight both the fans of Enya and Lauryn Hill. The band – unlike too many studio projects like this – is playing live regularly, you’ll get a chance to see them at Pianos on December 2nd.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Music Video: “Trench Mouth” – Heavy Medical

Posted on:

Would you rather have a pizza party or beer party? If you’re thinking pizza-beer party, then experience what that’d be like with the guys from Heavy Medical in the new music for their track "Trench Month," which is part of the group’s latest demo EP Constant Disappointment. After checking it out, do you think that they’re the best dudes or the worst dudes to party with? Ha…we’ll say the former as long as they’re not doing it in our homes.

Annie Rivera Scholarship Benefit Concert w/Cayetana, TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb & More at Underground Arts Nov. 23

Posted on:
Underground Arts hosts a whole afternoon of music in honor of the Annie Rivera Scholarship Fund today. This scholarship provides financial aid to top undocumented students who achieved Deferred Action Citizen status to attend college at a major university. There will be a silent auction that will have restaurant gift cards, salon services, artwork from local artists, and more as prizes. And there will be a special concert that features three up-and-coming local acts. Despite still being relatively new to the scene, the femme fatales of Cayetana have been comfortably finding their place as another talented, buzzworthy Philly act with an old school indie grrrl band sound that channels memories of Sleater-Kinney on their bold debut full-length Nervous Like Me. For the past few years, TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb have been mainstays and ambassadors to the local music scene. And whether they channel a drunk Tom Waits or deliver original songs from a powerful album like KONG, they do so with a blues-tinged folk-rock punch. Rounding out this eclectic lineup will be the New Sound Brass Band. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 3pm, $25, All Ages (Cayetana Photo by Ally Newbold) – Bill McThrill

Shark Tape Album Release Show at MilkBoy Philly Nov. 22

Posted on:

The last few days have frozen the surroundings. However, Shark Tape’s new LP Marathon, produced by local aficionado Jeff Zeigler as well as Phil Nicolo (The Police), provides the type of sonic heat required to get listeners locked in a deep freeze up and out. Now that you’re ready to move, head to Milkboy to catch the band’s record release this evening. The trio of Stephen Lorek, Dylan Mulcahy & Niles Weiss generates a refined, powerful rock sound that covers a lot of musical terrain, with no shortage of catchy hooks. Their constant moving aesthetic gets you on your feet, and has the hard-churning instrumentation to keep you there. So step outside and let Shark Tape’s Marathon thaw you out, because these songs could transform into anthems. Tonight, they’ll be joined by youthful, folk-rock crew Pine Barons. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Longtime Friends & Fire Alums Hezekiah Jones, Mutlu & Sean Hoots at Ardmore Music Hall Nov. 22

Beloved indie-folk artist Hezekiah Jones and the cavalcade of “Jones” Family members that act as his band are working on their most ambitious project to date. They have been laying out the groundwork for the follow-up album to the well-received Have You Seen Our New Fort? for months, and come December – they’ll be hitting the studio to lay it down. The band will also be attempting to release the album without label support, and to do so, they’ve launched a Pledge Music campaign that will crowdfund the album and support Mighty Writers, a Philly organization that helps young writers hone their skills. Before they hit the studio, the Jones Family will be throwing a preview party at Ardmore Music Hall tonight, and they’ll be joined by their longtime friend and acclaimed singer-songwriter Mutlu. The singer of Turkish descent most recently released the five-song EP, The Dream Book, which is a vibrant blend of world music, soul, reggae, and folk rock. Rounding out the lineup will be the charismatic frontman of folk institution Hoots & Hellmouth, Sean Hoots. Ardmore Music Hall, 23 E. Lancaster Ave., 7PM, $14 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, November 21 – 23

Some lineups are solid but have weaker spots; others are strong with talent from top to bottom. Remember when the Phillies were strong, and now, well…before I digress, the bill this Saturday night is a can’t miss one, and conveniently it’s at Everybody Hits! The power-trio of Amanda X delivers sincere songs with a pop-punk melded tone and varying tempos that provide a tug and pull of energy that draws you close and then bursts through with the force of a crashing wave. Speaking of power trios, Hurry combines instrumental force and memorable, fuzzed-out guitar licks that lead into infectious rockers with lyrics incorporate a universal touch. Then, there’s the Dominic Angelella and Eric Slick pairing known as Lithuania. Their sound is simultaneously tight and twisted, hitting hard and fast in a lively garage-punk spectrum or delving off the beaten path and seeing where the synth and percussion leads them. The show will be led off by the distorted pop-rock of duo Slow Animal. Everybody Hits!, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Tense surf-punks Wild Bore play Pianos, Rock Shop and Cakeshop in a month

Posted on:

"Holy Crap!" – that’s the first reaction we had while playing "Mine" by NYC female trio Wild Bore. In that track the three ladies beware as wildly as your average punk rocker circa 1977, while incorporating surf and post punk elements in their explosive sound. They have three singles out so far, all released in the second half of 2014. "Eddi Munster" is some kind of "half blues" featuring a Devo-esque vocal line – only less robotic and more psycho. "Mon Amie, Elise" – streaming below – is the tamer track of the bunch, but not necessarily the less tense. It also features a chord change, which here at the Deli we very much appreciate! You have three chances to see Wild Bore in NYC in the next few weeks: Pianos on 11.24, Rock Shop on 12.04 and Cakeshop on 12.19.

Mya Byrne releases “As I Am” + plays The Living Room tomorrow (11.22)

Posted on:

Transformations are at once the most painful and liberating processes we can experience, and can be also among the most inspiring. This past spring, Delicious Audio contributor and Americana performing artist Mya Byrne (previously known as Jeremiah Birnbaum) came out as a transgender woman. After this breakthrough, a period of intense creativity followed, which brought to life the songs in Mya’s debut album "As I Am." This is an inspired collection of folky, personal songs that mostly reflect influences from the golden years of folk-rock, from Joni Mitchell’s jazzy, disarming sincerity to Neil Young’s evocative, twangy poetry, with some exceptions veering towards blues and old timey. Opening track "April Fool" is a testament to change, which, filtered through Mya’s experience, is an explosively complicated – and therefore fertile – issue, in particular for the people who surround her: "And in me you see a stranger, someone you thought you knew, ink spilled, a quill collapsed on the last line of a picture you drew." Mya will be playing at The Living Room’s new Williamsburg location on November 22. – photo by Emily Raw
