Bands in the Studio: WOLVVES

Posted on:

It’s rare to find top notch musicians and producers giving their soul to a musical project that puts edge and experimentation before anything else. Such is Brooklyn band WOLVVES, formed by the Valleau triplets, who forge suspenseful (if not terrifying), noir, experimental electronic rock. We asked a few question to the knob fiddler in the band, producer/multi-instrumentalist Joshua Valleau.

((sounder))

Posted on:

A collaboration of music and video, Mike Aho, has created ((sounder)) as his musical project. Music videos and a film further explain some of the deeply, romantic music being produced by Aho.  The only embodiment of lo-fi you can feel is when the headphones are on and the volume is cranked up – because that’s when you begin to hear the subtle white noise echoing in the background. A voice combined with keys, an acoustic guitar and drums, easily, fill a room with emotional beauty across the spectrum. The band will be having their album release show this Saturday (Nov. 8) during Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites at The Parish.-Halie Davis

Little Big League Record Release Show at JB’s Nov. 7

Posted on:
Tropical Jinx, the beautifully crafted new album by Little Big League, was conceived during a time when singer/guitarist Michelle Zauner was coming to grips with her parents struggles through their marriage – a partners infidelity, sexual issues, and then some. While the collection’s lyrical content is inspired by familial struggles and lost childhood, the instrumental backdrop is vibrant indie music at its finest, and the combination is very worthy of the celebration that will ensue at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Sadly, the show is somewhat bittersweet as the band will be taking a bit of a hiatus after tonight so Michelle can move back to Oregon for a while to support her father after her mother passed away due to cancer. So this evening will be a good opportunity to show your support by relishing in the good times. Since Jesse Radlow and Asher Brooks of Tutlie played a supporting role in the creation of Tropical Jinx, it’s fitting for them to take part in the celebration. And they’ll be joined by alt-shoegazers The Spirit of the Beehive and New York’s LVL UP. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Kara Milstein) – Bill McThrill

Paperhead to Release “Africa Avenue” 11.11

Posted on:

Paperhead just returned home after a two-week run around the Midwest and up to New York for CMJ, where they recieved some well-deserved attention (Noisey, in particular, called their music "straight-up, acid folk perfection.") The foursome is set to release their second album, "Africa Avenue" on November 11th via Chicago, IL label Trouble in Mind. It has the same feel of "Rubber Soul," not only in trippiness but also in that several songs feature just one interesting sonic addition, like the jazzy flute collaborating on track 6, "Nasty Girl"  or an only-slightly creepy chorus of children’s voices on track 2, "Eye for Eye," or some very retro space effects on the first song, "Africa." It’s a very polite, very British approach to psychedelia. Paperhead is part of the lineup for Fly Golden Eagle’s album release show at Queen’s Art Collective on November 14th; the show starts at 9 and cover is $10. -Terra James-Jura

Weekly Feature: The Teen Age plays three NYC shows in November

Posted on:

Expectations for your mid-20s are fuzzy at best, and The Teen Age seem set upon doing what comes naturally. The band creates some of the best locally-sourced, fuzzed out garage rock (although brewed in Brooklyn basements), but what really sets them apart is an ability to seamlessly incorporate styles like doo-woop and surf punk into their sound. Buried under waves of reverb, The Teen Age write songs about an extended adolescence, told through experienced eye. Songs for, maybe not a lost generation, but definitely one waiting for that next band to sweep them off their feet.

– Read Emilio Herce’s interview with The Teen Age.
– See The Teen Age live at Pianos on November 11 and 18, and at Mercury Lounge on 11.24.

Trashbear lands November Cake Shop residency

Posted on:

God bless the Cake Shop for having carved a performance space in Manhattan for all the DIY, Lo-Fi, garage and punk bands! The venerable LES venue just booked Brooklyn garage-pop quartet Trashbear for a four date November Monday residency that started this week and will continue until November 24. The band plays charming and well crafted, but nonetheless scruffy, pop songs, definitely the kind of chilled but fun music needed to improve the average New Yorker’s late fall Monday nights!

The Shivas Release ‘You Know What To Do’

Posted on:

Portland’s beloved surf/psych twangsters, The Shivas, are back at it with the release of their fourth LP, You Know What To Do. The Album is already available digitally through their bandcamp page, with physical copies to be released through K Records on CD and Vinyl and Burger Records on Cassette. You Know What To Do is a lenthy 13 tracks, chaulk-full of their steadfast and throwback vocal harmonies, staccato guitar, hand claps, and reverb.

Album opener and title track "You Know What To Do" teases the listener with a brief fourty five seconds of a slowed down surf-meets-the-wild-west intro before paddling full bore into a wave-thrashing speed ball with hints of Thee Oh Sees influence. Appropriately titled tracks "Beach Heads" and "Stroking Off" eminate their obvious influential references of Beach Boys and The Strokes, respectively. A personal favorite on the LP, "Used To Be Cool," boasts one of the coolest surf guitar licks I’ve ever heard throughout the song’s intro, verses and outro. Catch The Shivas official release show for You Know What To Do this Friday night, November 8th, at Bunk Bar along with Jollapin Jasper and Moon By You.
