From Jake Saunders’ report of Day 5 of the CMJ 2014 Music Marathon. " The first set I caught [at the Exploding in Sound unofficial CMJ show] was Rick Maguire of Pile‘s solo set. Now Pile might be the king of all Exploding in Sound bands, having possibly been around the longest (don’t quote me on that; Aaron Maine of Porches might’ve been around longer going under many different names since settling on Porches). They’re a band whose live show has more soul and power than I’ve seen possibly ever. A lot of that energy comes from Rick Maguire, whose songs are like daggers to the gut; honest and thought provoking, he’s got a presence on the stage that’s hard to match. Pile is a band that has come a long way, and is a band worth researching because they bring something special out in people, take my word for it. ‘
New Track: “Panama” – Dream Safari
Dream Safari, the electro-pop project from Chris Coulton, recently dropped a new single entitled "Panama." The intricate polyrhythmic beats add a complexity to the track that feels almost effortless amidst its vibrant pop melodies. Coulton will be translating his studio magic to a live setting this Friday, November 14 at local batting cages/music space Everyone Hits.
Show Alert: Stone Jack Jones at Exit/In 11.10
It seems that every time we revisit Stone Jack Jones our minds get bent a little more, and we like it. He released "Circumstance" late October as a prelude to his upcoming album. It is just as unsettling as what we’ve come to expect, but it’s a little faster and harder, and there’s a definite spaghetti Western tang to is this one that grabs our intrigue. Kurt Wagner of Lambchop makes an appearance on this track, as the creepy demon voice echoing the lyrics, we assume, unless Wagner sat in on banjo and the recording just happened to turn out that way, something that would not be completely out of the realm of possiblity for Jack Jones and his sage-burning ways. Stone Jack Jones has been on tour for the better part of October with O’Death, a genuis pairing that is stopping in Nashville this Monday night at Exit/In for anyone with $12 in their pocket. Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons round out the evening’s bill.
As an aside, O’Death recently lost all of their gear to a theft in L.A. and has been scrambling to not only piece things together after a potentially career-ending blow, but are also soldiering on to complete the last dates of their tour. Cold Fronts EP Release Show at The Barbary Nov. 9
If Cold Fronts’ now infamous shows at the Rathaus are any indicator of what to expect for their record release party at The Barbary, it’s going to get dangerously rowdy. However, while Craig Almquist and Al Smith (who founded the band) may have cultivated a dedicated fan base playing late-night shows at the 40-littered, broken-down, University City warehouse nicknamed the Rat, they’ve since scored a Warner Bros Records deal after impressing Sire Records founder Seymour Stein at an impromptu show at SXSW. True to their style, the new high-energy EP, Forever, incites that kind of wild, bouncy, whip-your-head like a maniac dancing (just take a listen to its single "Hit Me"), which sounds like a romcom theme song that’s stuck in your head weeks after you saw the movie. Cold Fronts are opening for Chicago-based Empires, and are currently supporting them on a string of dates this month. Get there early for the all-ages performance, and get ratty. Terrorista
Talk about band branding! Terrorista is already a collectors item! Check out their first release"TER" Pink Tape in a four cassette singles series. Don’t worry if you don’t own a cassette player, get yours off bandcamp. Wicked two piece post-post punk band! ‘Philip Seymour Hoffman’, terrific track! It’s a juicy blend of guitars and drums that makes you wanna bounce! The vocals are charmingly garage with a wickedly loud chorus line. ‘Brand New Language’ is a badass dance track! Well, it makes us dance! Listen for yourself below! Stay tuned for show info and how to get your cassette tapes…
Amanda X Opening for Parkay Quarts at PhilaMOCA Nov. 8
Amnesia, the debut LP the trio of Amanda X, is a record that immediately caught my attention, and with each successive listen, that sonic bond grows stronger. It gives off a close to the vest personal vibe that varies in tone from grey and ominous to bright and promising, consistently moving free in a pop-punk environment in which the individual instrumental elements are tightly woven developing a cohesive sound that’s easy to gravitate toward and rough enough to sink into with enough air to emerge from. Tonight, Amanda X opens for the street-level, dirt-under-your-nails, earnest, sludgy melodic punk of Parkay Quarts; however, the event at PhilaMOCA is sold out so hopefully you planned ahead. Best of CMJ 2014: NYC’s Show Me the Body
From Jake Saunders report of Day 5 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014: "Show Me The Body opened for Denzel Curry and Ratking at the Letter Racer/Mass Appeal showcase at Trans Pecos. I missed Geronimo!, Baked, Two Inch Astronaut and Krill as well as Roomrunner, all amazing bands worth looking into. It was a shit show, with two hundred drunk kids packed into the tiny venue where I’m used to seeing weird experimental acts play to an empty room. My boys in Show me the Body killed it, conjuring the craziest mosh pit I’ve seen since Death Grips. I say "seen" because I would have died or seriously injured myself had I participated. SMTB has been pushing their limits further and further, with bassist Harlan Steed adding an immense amount of mass to the sound as he experiments further with looping and pedal mashing. Keep an eye out for this band; they’ve certainly got a crafted image, but it never subtracts from the attention they pay to the music, always pushing things further, challenging their audience and enjoying themselves on stage. And by the way, yes I am biased, having watched this band over the past five years or so evolve into what they’ve become, but now they’re getting props form bigger whigs than me. I had a very firm realization at this show; SMTB is not "my" band anymore… they’ve got a fan base that doesn’t include the friends we grew up with. "
NYC bands on the rise: Teen Commandments play Mercury on 11.19
In their Facebook blog, NYC band Teen Commendements appreciates the fact that the folks at CMJ described their music as "Synth Pop to the extreme." Uhm, what’s with that electric guitar and that… wooden stick in the picture then? Well, I guess appearences can be misleading, because (besides the vocals) everything sounds drastically synthetic in these guys’ recordings, and very much 80s influenced too – by the way, I wonder if one day we’ll be able to say that an electronic pop band is influenced by music from a decade other than that one. To their credit though, they keep that era’s cheesiness under control. This sounds like a fun band to witness live, you can party with them at Mercury Lounge on November 11 with Lazer Cake and HITS – two bands we booked for our CMJ 2101 show.
Panic is Perfect Releases New Single – Go Go Go
San Francisco based pop band, Panic is Perfect has released a new single. Their new song Go Go Go is an elaborate recording that is full of energy and personality. This new track is the first single from the band’s upcoming EP. Details will be announced by the band super soon.
Until then, you should check out this track. It’s not garage, but you know The Deli is all about sharing different types of music with our readers and listeners. No two bands are exactly alike! Enjoy!
Psychic Teens & Hound Release Show at Boot & Saddle Nov. 7
The prospects for tonight’s SRA Records-oriented dual release show at Boot & Saddle are righteous. "Face," one-side of tormenting psych-death rockers Psychic Teens, is a menacing energetic tune littered with jagged, attacking instrumentations and a dose of commanding growl driven vocals that will crawl into your ear waves in a hauntingly pleasant manner. The heavy-footed pedal to the floor classic metal with garage grit of Perry Shall, Colin Mcginus and Chris Wilson combine as a bona fide rocking force, as Hound, and this show will also serve as the record release for their debut LP Out of Time. The show will also feature renowned hardcore outfit Flag Of Democracy, a.k.a. F.O.D., and the high-speed intensity of Spectrum Disorder. Be prepared for Boot & Saddle to rain sweat and ooze with unrelenting, raucous intensity. In other words, be there. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Ssleeperhold
Droned-out, industrial beats pour out of Jose Cota’s loops of 1980s horror film bass lines and the perfect amount of heavy drum beats, making sense of Ssleeperhold. Ruleth explores a variety of genres from the dream pop sounds in “timeghosts (i)” to the dirty, military-style hits in “F.I.S.T.” Ssleeperhold is a multitude of Cota’s expressions, screaming out into the electronic scene through a synth. -Halie Davis
