Forebear play the Satellite on 10.8

Posted on:

Forebear, originally Wise Cub, formed in 2011, though their raw talent would suggest they’ve been playing together far longer. Scott Goldbaum’s guitar work is transient and breathtaking. He plays with experience reminiscent of a long-gone classical era with influences of Spanish guitar juxtaposed with modern indie rock vocals. Goldbaum’s brilliant stylings aside, the band is not short of inspired instrumentalists. With Molly Rogers on viola, keys and vocals, Mike Musselman on drums and Nick Chamian on bass, the band meanders through various genres with the skill set of a seasoned band. Their new track, "North Korea & The Five Stages of Grief", showcases the effervescence and ease they have championed in playing together. Harmonies between Goldbaum and Rogers are ethereal and the track finishes memorably with a graceful viola solo by Rogers.

Caterwaulrus not “Fading”

Posted on:

The lush sounds of the latest track from Caterwaulrus will have you wondering how it all comes from just one man. John Michael Sherry is the guy behind the psychedelic indie pop act, but to be fair “Fading” features members from Austin psych-rock outfit 365colours. Sherry’s layered sound could have come off as contrived but it’s a beautiful jumble that knows where it is going. Think Woods mixed with the swagger of Devendra Banhart. Hopefully more new music will be released under Caterwaulrus sooner than later. – Allison Mayoral

Check out his set with a live band at the Ditch The Fest Fest at Empire Control Room this Saturday, Oct 11.

Psych Metal from Brooklyn: Tidal Arms

Posted on:

Brooklyn psych-metal band Tidal Arms isn’t just another Sonic Youth devotee creating their idea of what metal sounds like. It is For-Us-By-Us metal. On their self-titled second album, the band supply pile-driving riffs that are mathy enough for engineer Alan Douches’s (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge) mastering, and stoned enough to make you stop wondering about a Kyuss reunion. Dip in to "Gooski’s Ladder" or "Molasses" (streaming), and hold on to your senses. – Ben Apatoff

Posted on:

The last few months for Wesley Bunch, a.k.a. Suburban Living, has been a whirlwind pace, signing to PaperCup Music (who plan on releasing his self-titled album on January 27, 2015), moving from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Philadelphia, and assembling a new backing band. He’s been busy to say the least, and tonight, Suburban Living makes its Philly debut as locals at Boot & Saddle. The band’s latest single “New Strings” captures an up-tempo synth/percussive-propelled sound with serrated guitar providing a little edge. They will be opening for local dance-inducing, high-energy outfit Dream Safari and headliners CRUISR, whose recent label release All Over (Vagrant) is a flash of vibrant refreshing pop-rock. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

A NYC Songwriter to keep an ear on: Dru Cutler plays Radio Bushwick on 10.10

Posted on:

Hailing from Tampa, FL, Dru Cutler is an eclectic songwriter that now calls Brooklyn home. His debut single "you and me and the system" (video here) is an extremely well produced, atmospheric mid tempo, featuring an unusual melody that resolves in a hummed, evocative chorus. Side B "train" is a bluesier number that confirm Dru’s preference for slower tempos and intimate atmospheres. The more recent single "Familiar" almost veers towards the Pink Floyd ascetic pop of the "Whish You Were Here" years, although the lyrics are kept down to earth – actually focused on day to day life and love in NYC. Dru Cutler will be performing at Radio Bushwick tomorrow 10.10
