Hard Nips added to The Deli’s CMJ show at Spike Hill on 10.23

Posted on:

Next week is CMJ week folks! As you may have noticed, The Deli – as usual – has some kind of mini-festival within the festival, with seven stages and about fifty bands booked. Oh, and there’s one more! The provocative, rigorously Japanese female quartet known as Hard Nips will be closing our Garage/Psych/DIY show at Spike Hill on Thursday 10.23 with their… (can we say sexy? ok…) sexy brand of garage rock. Definitely the right way to end a crazy night of music in NYC, they’ll hit the stage just after 1am.

Sego Announces New EP, “Wicked Youth”

Posted on:

Sego’s psychedelic trip through time warps and intoxicating rhythms creates their first EP, Wicked Youth, which is set to be released October 27th. Listening to the 5-track playlist, I couldn’t help but lose my mind in their blend of trippy guitar riffs, exploratory melodies and engaging lyrics. Band members Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll do a mesmerizing job at giving their listeners a sense of nirvana while listening to the album. A relaxing journey through the mind of Sego can take us on timeless adventures to and from the digitized world. Combining psychedelic rock, shoegazing and soft dubstep into one EP, Sego masters the art of perfection. – Kayla Hay

From the digital submissions: Captain Baby

Posted on:

After Septebmer it becomes increasingly difficult for us to check the music that’s sent to us for coverage consideration, but this weekend we found the energy to go through a bunch of them, here’s a bands we feel deserve to be highlighted.

NYC quartet Captain Baby offers forward looking pop/rock, ta times reminiscent of that incredible NYC band that was Soul Coughing ("I Say You" – streaming), at others the more progressive David Bowie albums ("Be Ashamed"). Their full length "Sugar Ox" is a raw cross genre exploration and features a lot of interesting ideas and sonics.

This band submitted their music for coverage here.

NYC Americana masters Hollis Brown tour the UK + work on new album

Posted on:

Queens-born folk rock band Hollis Brown has a 1960’s heart powered by the seamless recording techniques of 2014, and we love that they’re keeping that rich, old-timey, American folk sound in the contemporary mix. Their latest release “Gets Loaded” nods at the drug-heavy tunes of the 60s by delivering their own rootsy take of The Velvet Underground’s classic 1970 album Loaded from back-to-front. From its opening “Oh Sweet Nuthin’,” powered by a blues-based lead guitar line, to it’s closing “Who Loves The Sun,” driven by a truly harmonic chorus, the release is worth a good, listen, as it adds beauty to already powerful songwriting. The band is about to start recording a new album and will be touring the UK this Fall, but be sure to catch them live when they’re back in the local rotation. – Jillian Dooley

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Show Alert: Milk People EP Release at The End 10.18

Posted on:

It sounds as though lightning struck when Milk People first went into the studio to record "Steeples." They laid down the track shortly after their first practice together, with a clear understanding that they had hit upon a defining sound. This single, with blazing hot energy thanks to traded vocals and a fat opening riff worthy of a Tarantino flick, found its way to the public back in May. The band, which has since added three additional members to the founding duo of Garrett Barber and Emma Holden, now has EP "Invisible Ink" ready for release. Will it retain the same camp-to-rawk ratio as "Steeples?" Have they bottled (or, more appropriately, recorded) lightning? You’ll just have to pick it up and listen. Luckily, Milk People are making it easy on you by offering a copy of "Invisible Ink" free with attendance to their release show this Saturday, October 18th at The End. Previous Artist of the the Month winners The Whippoorwills will be pitching in to make this one hell of a night, along with Down Boy and Secret Club. Go get milky with them. -Terra James-Jura

Everyone Moves Away, “With the Night”

Posted on:

Everyone Moves Away floats to the top of the electro/synth/dream/post/pre-/present/-gaze miasma with this video for "With the Night." There’s a pleasing unity to the song, even though it is conceptually at odds with itself. There’s some R&B flavor in in the refrain, but the song is too avant garde to fall into that category. There’s a dream-pop sensibility to the way the song unfolds, but builds up to a very taut intensity at the end to be either dreamy or poppy. Regardless of classification, group does an excellent job seizing upon an emotion and letting the music follow route. This track is off their EP "ii," which was released August 26th, which is available on iTunes and Spotify. -Terra James-Jura

Hound Opening for JEFF The Brotherhood & Diarrhea Planet at Underground Arts Oct. 11

Posted on:

Raunchy guitar loaded with a neo-‘70’s rock, all-in battering ram musical arsenal that sticks with you the whole way through delivering memorable instrumental forays along the way. Perry Shall-led hard-rocking trio Hound, whose latest record Out of Time will be available as a physical LP on November 28 via SRA Records (listen to the group’s new single "Little One" HERE), will serve as the opening act to a rad evening of jams at Underground Arts. Virginia transplants turned Philly residents Left & Right, who delivered a new record Five Year Plan last month, have a sound that incorporates a loose casual rock vibe with a knack for accelerating the intensity at key moments and searing away. The show will be headlined by rock ‘n’ roll heavyweights JEFF The Brotherhood and Diarrhea Planet (for whom the multi-talented Shall has designed album covers and worked with in many aspects over the years). Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Penn Treaty Park has one last dose of exciting outdoor action when it hosts its 7th Annual RiverCity Festival today to benefit the Fishtown Neighbors Association. And it will feature over 100 local art and food vendors selling their goods within the park, as well as plenty of family-friendly activities like Tangle Arts Movement and the Philadelphia Zoo on Wheels.
