Intimate Exposures with Grandparents: The Interview…

Posted on:

This series wouldn’t be very "intimate" if we didn’t talk with the band and bring to light their deepest and darkest, am I right? Well, here at The Deli Portland we don’t really know what we’re doing, and we sure as shit don’t know how to keep things serious. That said, enjoy our interview with Grandparents and stay tuned for their second live music video next week!

Weekend Warrior, October 17 – 19

Brooklyn guitar virtuoso and Landowne-born Steve Gunn still maintains deep roots here in Philly. So much so, he’ll be celebrating the release of his latest record, Way Out Weather, tonight at PhilaMOCA. Joining him on the bill is a couple of the finest acts in the City of Brotherly Love’s underground music community. The evening will have raucous start with rad garage-psych outfit Spacin’. The group is easily one of my favorite bands in town, and I can’t wait for their new album, which will be available via Richie Records, to come out. And things will a bit quieter but in the best way possible when talented combination of Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler take the stage to mesmerize the audience with interstellar soundscapes. It’s going to be an eclectic evening of music, but one worth catching from start to finish. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Alexis V.

Long Island’s electro one man band Saint Pepsi plays CMJ at Mercury on 10.22

Posted on:

We all know how picky Bowery Presents is with the artists it books – bring no crowd to one of their shows and you are out! In this perspective, a slot at Mercury Lounge during CMJ week can be seen as a valuable prize for artists respected by booking staff of the NYC venue giant. In truth, this year not many emerging locals made it on the Mercury Lounge’s CMJ week listings. One of the lucky ones is the electronic tinkerer that goes under the name of Saint Pepsi (aka Ryan DeRobertis). From his ambient disco beginnings, enriched with the soul of vocal samples, Ryan in his more recent release on Carpark Records has switched gear to a more direct synth-pop format, graced by his own vocals. His music is more appropriate for a loungy party than a wild night of dancing, although – while lounging – you might not be able to prevent parts of your body from moving to his beats. Listen to single "Fiona Coyne" below and check out Saint Pepsi live at Mercury on October 22.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Electronic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Album review: The B’Dinas – Fruitcakes

Posted on:

The B’Dinas’ Fruitcakes is a creative juggernaut of hopeful turmoil; heavy groove and sexy vocal driven filled longing. It is an instant local classic.

“Fated,” the opening track, is an up-tempo rocker with a blazing guitar. It has a retro psychedelic keyboard reminiscent of the ‘60s San Francisco scene—a great way to kick off a record.

“Pretty Neat (Candy Store)” is the album’s second track, with some of my favorite lyrics on the entire collection. I love profanity in rock ‘n’ roll but it’s very rarely done with power and grace. Roger Waters may be the best at it, and while there are other singers with clever filthy mouths, The B’dinas has one for the books with the line, “All your promises don’t mean shit if I can’t hold the value in my hand.” True enough, it seems to be. I’ve been walking around for days singing this line. It’s tough but tender because it’s delivered by Katelyn Jamison’s forgiving voice.

“Nuts and Bolts” is one of the shortest tracks on the record. This is a tough tune that makes me want to walk down the street with a switchblade in one hand and a flower in another.

The tune “Crystal Ball” opens with lovers in the sack. The heroine is just lying there when she turns over to glare out the window at a blackbird. The song is a mid-tempo funky thing with an Edgar Allen Poe twist. This song moves from blues to ‘50s vocal pop into a light prog rock ending.

“Two Doves” is a gem, a mix of Little Feat and Marshall Tucker. It’s almost jam band in a retro Van Morrison way. The B’Dinas have two doves in their mind so it must be very peaceful there. They sing of doing “it” all night and everyone loves that idea… everyone! The guitar is terrific and the solo is so sleepy, soulful, and cold-blooded I’ve had to rewind it several times. The B’Dinas should shop this tune to Widespread Panic. It’s an absolute classic.

“Bread and Butter” conjures up a 90’s SoCal vibe mixed with a little Go-Gos meets Carole King. This one has a serious groove and great drums. “Can’t Shake It” has serious saxophone hooks and dark lyrics. Katy Guillen sings of wearing gray and having an unbearable burden baring down upon her chest she cannot shake. This one hints a bit of the Neville Brothers Yellow Moon era.

Goddamned” is another beautiful example how to use profanity the right way. “I see you got your eyes wide… you better hold on to your hi-fi,” and “I’ll be goddamned.” This one is going straight to the top of the list of songs to play and sing when things aren’t going my way.

The records closing track, “Answer Me,” is a dark soul tune with a guitar solo that probably peeled paint off the walls of the studio. It is the perfect way to say goodbye.

The B’dinas Fruitcakes is worth it. It is obvious they have expended a tremendous amount of effort, musicianship, and creative songwriting talent into these eleven tracks. It has an intensely serious musical vibe with lighthearted narrative. It’s fun and it grooves. My only criticism so far of this record is I’m not listening to it on vinyl.

The B’Dinas are:
Katy Guillen – guitars/vocals/harmonica
Katelyn Jamison – keys/vocals/bass
Peter Lawless – bass/vocals/saxophone
Tess Jehle-Ray – drums/vocals

Fruitcakes was recorded by Jerod Rivers at Sangha Studios, and mastered by Bruce Barkelew at Mansion Studio.

AJ Rider

AJ Rider was born in in the town where Jesse James died to a soldier and playboy bunny. His mother has let it slip on many drunken nights that he was conceived at the Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter Than Air Fair 1. He is a child of the sixties, has seen the grateful dead 126 times, and has a soft spot for the schoolteacher type.

Join The B’Dinas tonight at Coda, where they will be sharing the stage with Morningglories. Doors at 9:00 p.m. Facebook event page.

Spaceships Announce New EP, Out 11.4

Posted on:

Garage pop act Spaceships are known for their rough, yet sublimely melodic bedroom recordings. It looks like those days may finally be over for the prolific duo, who are finally taking it to the studio with their latest self-titled EP. The upgrade in sound quality is instantly apparent in new single "Good Gradez", an expectedly fuzzy number with harmonic "oohs" that’s offset by a virtuous guitar lead. The EP is slated for a November 4th release via New Professor Records.

Record of the Month: Zula – “This Hopeful”

Posted on:

Sometimes records grow on us – such is the case for Zula’s "This Hopeful," released in October 2013.
There are two sides to psychedelia: dream and hallucination. Shoegazer and Dream Pop embrace the first, Psych Rock the second. Brooklyn band Zula perfectly blend both. The band finds itself at home when it’s time to engage in sonic experimentations mostly fueled by frantic stomping on guitar effect pedals ("This Hopeful"), but can deliver – a few minutes later – the perfectly placid dreamy melody of NRGZ. These are the two stronger songs in the band’s debut LP "This Hopeful" (although we also dig "Poison," streaming below), an album that never ceases to surprise, and that showcases a band that dares to explore every possibility given by every single musical element at their disposal, without renegading neither melody nor noise, but admirably succeeding in retaining a stylistic identity in the process.

Read The Deli’s interview with Zula from earlier in 2014 + see them live at CMJ next week, it shouldn’t be hard to fit into your schedule, they are playing seven shows!

Needle Points 7” Release Show at KFN Oct. 17

Posted on:
Philly psych/garage rock outfit Needle Points promises a real late-night party at Kung Fu Necktie for its record release show in honor of the band’s latest 7”, Cripple Street (PaperCup Music), which features two new tracks (“Cripple Street” and “Black Hurricane”). The group’s new material reveals a poppier side of the five-piece, with more of a folk rock influence than on their debut EP, Bom Tugangu. Producing similar kinds of conscious-expanding jams as this evening’s headliner will be local crew The Orange Drop and The Golden Brass (from Brooklyn). It’s a special night for The Orange Drop as well. Lead guitarist Blaze Kozlik has been out as of late with a broken finger; this show will serve as his return to the stage. The Orange Drop, which released its first EP, Drone Pop, in January, is currently working on the group’s next. As for tonight’s bill, you can count on some serious good vibes and maybe even some modern-day hippies. Come out, “turn on, tune in, drop out,” and get down! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N Front St, 11pm, 21+, $5 – Emily DiCicco

Boots, ex Blonds, on tour with FKA Twigs + live at Baby’s All Right on 10.28

Posted on:

We booked NYC duo Blonds two years ago for our CMJ 2012 Rootsy Stage – we remember the band complained that they weren’t really a rootsy band. Well, maybe they weren’t, but we must have detected some of those soul influences that are now pouring out of the band’s male half Jordy Asher’s new solo project BOOTS. (For the record, soul music belong to the roots music umbrella). The young musician and producer suddenly rose to relevance (rather than fame) when in  2013 he signed to Jay-Z’s entertainment company and Sony Music Entertainment imprint, Roc Nation, and produced the big majority of Beyoncé’s self-titled fifth studio album, released in December 2013. He’s now focusing on his solo material, which – from single Mercy (streaming below) – sounds extremely soulful and intensely mellow. Boots will be touring with FKA Twigs in November, see him at Baby’s All Right on Tuesday 10.28.
