The Britanys release sophomore EP + play CMJ

Posted on:

We stumbled upon NYC garage pop trio The Britanys about a year ago through our digital submissions, and we hear now that the boys have been keeping at it, recently releasing a new EP entitled "It’s All Right." Lucas Long’s vocals tend to draw melodies that reference the Brit-pop bands of the 90s, with a tone that’s reminiscent of Billy Corgan at his most nasal. However, the opening title-track (streaming below) shifts things toward a speedy garage blues that perfectly suits the band’s "naughty" and youthful attitude. The Britanys will be performing twice this week within the CMJ Music Marathon, at Muchmore on 10.24 and at Arlene’s Grocery on 10.25.

Eddi Front replaces The Flag at The Deli’s Friday CMJ show at Pianos

Posted on:

Last minute cancellations at CMJ are nothing new and we are really sorry to lose The Flag from our Friday 10.24 bill at Pianos’ upstairs lounge. On the other hand we couldn’t be happier to welcome some old friends as a replacement, duo Eddi Front, whose lead singer we praised since her beginnings, when she used to go under the moniker Ivana XL. Don’t expect Friday night party music from this duo, Eddi Front will bring an intense mellowness to our showcase reminiscent of some maudit crooners of the 60s. Check out single Texas from their 2012 debut self-titled EP

New Music Video: “TEN THIRTY ONE” – The Ghost In You

Posted on:

Besides having the ability to write and record beautifully haunting ballads, Billy Polard, a.k.a. The Ghost In You, has the knack for tugging at our heartstrings with his self-directed music videos. His latest for "TEN THIRTY ONE" perfectly captures the weighted mood of the fall season and the glimpses of youthful joy that we once could attain simply by donning a Halloween costume. "Inspired by my memories of growing up in my old neighborhood, the leaves changing, carving jack o lanterns, my mom dressing up like a witch, the homemade costumes she made for me and my brothers, watching scary movies, and everything else that comes with the Halloween season… I hope hearing it triggers the same nostalgia and emotions that I felt writing it." The track will appear on his upcoming album as well as the soundtrack to the horror flick Honeyspider.

Titled "Tucked In," it will be available as a cassette for 5 bones at the show. This is a follow up to last July’s "Get Bent," and maintains their slutty, lo-fi brat rock. Alex Karaba’s guitar tears like a buzzsaw through buttery vibrant pop hooks, while Dan Colanduno pummels the skins with determined ferocity. That’s what you’ll find on Slow Animal‘s latest EP The Other Side, an album definitely worth revisiting. The bonus is that they’re even better live. If you missed the duo’s performance last night at Golden Tea House or just simply can’t get enough of them, then you’ll have your chance this evening when they open on another solid all-ages bill at The Barbary with Twin Peaks, Tweens, and Public Access TV, which is presented by WKDU. The Pick Brothers Band is soulful rockin’ roll with a kindred chemistry that can’t be ignored! I came across these guys during Toronto Indie Week and was floored as soon as I heard their vocals, what depth, backbone and diversity! Their debut album Pink Lemonade is spellbinding. It takes you on a musical journey from romantic-gospel, exotic grindhouse to bluesy rockin’ roll. Entirely just superb arrangements! Each track has its own story to tell, making the record an effortless listen! Watch their latest video for ‘Circles’, its a sexy rhumba that explodes into spicy grindhouse track, it should be in a Quentin Tarantino movie! Check their website for tour dates.

DJ Wise B Prepares To Remaster His Mixtape Called I.F.O

Posted on:

Rashad Brockington, better known on the 1s and 2s as DJ Wise B, is gearing up to remaster the latest EP off his record label, called I.F.O. Inspiration For Others. DJ Wise B prides himself on spinning an energy packed set, go-go style. “It’s interactive, a call and repeat with the people in the crowd,” describes the DMV native. The 22-year old turntablist and hip-hop producer started DJ-ing thanks to his pops challenging him to a rap battle- winner gets to pursue a rap career. Brockington lost the battle, but was gifted with a set of turntables instead. “My dad said everybody needs a DJ.” Daddy knows best! Brockington now runs the music label CAMP 421 and has acquired the rapper Supreme Elite, but is looking to reach others outside of the hip-hop persuasion. “I want street artists and opera singers all kinds of artists” envisions Brockington. Supreme Elite and DJ Wise B will release their two-point-oh version of the I.F.O. EP in early November on Spotify, Pandora, and iTunes. Until then, take a listen to the heavy bass and driving trap beats of the original I.F.O EP below. –Sade A. Spence

mewithoutYou Homecoming w/Hop Along at The Troc Oct. 18

Posted on:
Post-hardcore/experimental rock band mewithoutYou is coming back home for the final night of its 10th anniversary tour of Catch For Us The Foxes. The record was released almost exactly 10 years ago to this date by Tooth & Nail Records. The fan-favorite album features the kind of harsh schizophrenic pontifications from lead singer Adam Weiss, inspired largely by religious works as well as his own dark encounters that the band returned to on their latest album, Ten Stories, released in 2012. mewithoutYou suggests getting to The Troc early so you don’t miss out on their “best line-up of openers in ages”: The Appleseed Cast and Hop Along, local pop-punk-ish outfit, who recently opened for Philly favorites Dr. Dog at the Mann Center back in September. The group is led by Frances Quinlans often raspy, breathy vocals that are always both bewitching and alluring. Be there to support mewithoutYou’s homecoming! The Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch St., 7 pm, $18, All Ages – Emily DiCicco

Rosetta Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Oct. 18

Posted on:
Rosetta has already had a triumphant 2014 that has featured them releasing The Anaesthete, going on a big tour of China, and crowd sourcing a full-length documentary on Indiegogo. However, the band still has more in store for its fans this evening, celebrating the release of its latest EP, Flies to Flame (Translation Loss Records) at Boot & Saddle. Since the album is a release of experimental studio pieces, it will be a very rare occasion when they’ll be playing them on stage, and it won’t be happening tonight. But they’ll be doing something even bigger as it will be one of the first two shows that sees them unveiling all new material as a five-piece that features Eric Jernigan of City of Ships on second guitar. The performance, which is also the bands last of 2014, will also feature NYC’s Tiger Flowers, and it will be a good opportunity to catch Ladder Devils before they release their latest album Clean Hands on November 4. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Super Shaker, “Kong”

Posted on:

We had a friend that twists knobs at one of Nashville’s fine musical establishments turn us on to Super Shaker the other day. Lo and behold, it had been only two hours since they posted "Kong" on their Facebook page when we finally decided to creep on their social media. This is the first single from a recent marathon recording session, and it is one hell of an introduction to the band. It has an lead in similar to a Super Mario Bros. boss theme and may have a kazoo that surfaces somewhere in the middle, a few of the wtf moments that, after a few extra moments of deliberation, make this track awesome in a darkly weird way. We dig it, and respect Super Shaker’s altruism in providing dance rock for stoned gamers. The next chance to check them out live will be at The 5-Spot on October 30th. -Terra James-Jura

The Love Experimental: A Unique Event in Oakland – 10/26

Posted on:

We’re excited to share with you the news of a very unique event that is going down in Oakland on October 26th. The Love Experiment brings together a number of talented Bay Area vocalists to sing and perform in the name of love. "A group of singers from the Bay Area had an intriguing thought: with the amount of negativity that surrounds us, what if the only way to respond was with it’s diametric opposite–love."

Oakland based vocalist and member of Moon Candy, Jovan Watkins brought together a number of singers to create a concept that will allow his vision of battling negativity a reality.

The Love Experiment deals with finding love, losing love, giving love and feeling like there’s no more love to give. The most powerful aspect of the Experiment is presenting the idea that love can be a healing force. With that idea at the forefront, the group decided to use proceeds to benefit organizations that are using love to combat negativity. This Experiment will benefit Operation Ceasefire.
