siike92

Posted on:

Siike92 is the work Stevey Yarusinsky and ten days he unleashed a massive collection of "obsucra". Under the heading the.room.dis.connect, Siike92 released three albums filled with strange, beautiful, haunting, and challenging moments. Each release comes with an artbook and a mesmerizing story. Below is the story for my favorite of the three albums, Lavender Town.

A mother’s scrapbook. Three generations of women in a small, mid-western American town named Lavender. The woe of life, as well as it’s humble joys, are revealed through a series of candid photographs and writings. A somber omen sets the ambiance as you enter your voyeur. Reclining, you ponder "fairy’s hair."

Free Download: Hopscotch Fest 9/5/14 – Spacin’ + Purling Hiss

Posted on:

NYC Taper recently shared a rare treat that happened at this year’s Hopscotch Fest. Philly favorite sons Spacin’ and Purling Hiss joined their mighty forces on September 5, 2014 at Tir na Nog in Raleigh, North Carolina for an epic set that consisted of extended versions of 2 Spacin’ songs ("Sunshine No Shoes" & "Titchy"), 3 Purling Hiss songs ("Learning Slowly," "Run From the City," & "Almost Washed My Hair" with Mary Lattimore on harp and Steve Gunn on guitar), and a cover of MC5’s "American Ruse." Jack and Eliza release debut EP “No Wonders” + play Deli CMJ show on 10.22, Baby’s All Right on 10.01

Posted on:

Bands that last are often tied by bonds developed during their high school years (or earlier). New York natives Jack and Eliza have been chums since childhood, which explains the genuine warmth of their two-way harmonies. The folk-pop duo’s style is simple: two electric guitars and male/female voices, all blending in the most natural way imaginable. Two singles available on Soundcloud — "Secrets" and "Hold the Line" — went viral earlier this year channeling the relaxed, "beachy" atmosphere of Real Estate in a folkier, sparser approach. Today the band is releasing their debut EP ‘No Wonders,’ featuring those singles plus three more songs – you can find it on Spotify and iTunes, or buy it from their website. The record release party will be hosted at Baby’s All Right on 10.01. The band will be performing at The Deli’s CMJ Rootsy Stage at Rockwood Music Hall on October 22nd.

Kodacrome unveils video for “The City is Burning” – The Deli digs it

Posted on:

Every musician should have the sentence "Less Is More" tattooed on a part of their body often visible to their eyes – because unless you aspire to be the new Frank Zappa or Trent Reznor, you want your music to breathe. It’s a concept that  Brooklyn synth-pop duo Kodacrome knows well and practices flawlessly, both from a musical and visual standpoint. New single "The City is Burning" is a beautiful exercise in restraint, that somehow manages to "straighten" a complex 5/4 tempo. Every element in the arrangement is measured and essential: the minimalistic electric piano melody; the slightly vocoded drone of the simple melody; the sober rhythm pattern. The stunning video matches the song’s ascetic atmosphere by showing – in religious black and white – the miracle of water in all its glory, while semi-intelligible lyrics seem to stress the vulnerability of the human condition: "frozen summer/golden handcuffs/you are such a mess." Give this song/video some time, and you’ll be touched.

New Music Video: “Double Dutch” – A Sunny Day in Glasgow & Announce NYE Holiday Run

Posted on:

A Sunny Day in Glasgow‘s Jen Goma wanted to release the group’s track, "Double Dutch," off their latest LP Sea When Absent (Lefse Records), as a single, but the rest of the gang weren’t into having a one-minute single. So what did she do? She teamed up with Luisa Conlon (who was her partner in crime for a documentary series entitled The Working Life), and made a music video for one of her favorite songs on the album. You can check it out below, and the band also announced a holiday run of shows that will conclude with a hometown New Year’s Eve performance at Boot & Saddle.

Tiny Hazard release single ‘Silouhette” + play LPR on 09.26

Posted on:

At the end of 2013 Brooklyn quintet Tiny Hazard caught us off guard with this song and video – so much so that we had to invent a new "Best of" just for the occasion (we don’t do Video of the Month here at The Deli). The band is now releasing a new track (‘Silouhette’ – streaming below) that fully confirms their talent and – dare we say – uniqueness of sound. Presenting themselves as ‘experimental pop’ (we are always suspicious when we hear the word ‘experimental’ – it seems like everybody wants a piece of that pie in Brooklyn) Tiny Hazard offer complex, unpredictable songs that definitely deserve the ‘Avant-‘ appellation, while Alena Spanger’s beautifully contrived melodies keep the overall sound well inside the ‘pop’ territory. This is a band that deserves attention, don’t miss their next live show at Le Poisson Rouge on 09.26 opening for Kneebody and Kimbra.

Bike Thief: Album Review and Video Premier

Posted on:

Last month, Portland neo-folk band, Bike Thief, self-released their debut full-length album, Stuck in a Dream. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now is the perfect time!

I’m not the first to say they sound like Arcade Fire. In fact, they mention AF in their influences and biography. But it’s accurate, and not a slight. Arcade Fire is a giant monster-machine of a band because they did something so well that EVERYONE caught on.

Fittingly, Bike Thief’s first single “The Burning Past,” has an anthemic build, taking a typical indie folk/rock approach, then layering it with yell-sing group vocals, a range of percussive instruments, and heavily featured strings. I’m always a sucker for a rad string section, which according to the visually-stunning music video was performed by solemn paper mice.

The entire album offers a dynamic range of sounds and instruments, cleverly arranged by the band, guided by frontman and founder Febian Perez. Most of the members of Bike Thief are multi-instrumentalists, but they also have a whole slew of notable guest artists–they even feature the vocals of Portland Boychoir and Luz Mendoza of Y La Bamba dn Tiburones (on “We Once Knew Ya").

Stuck in a Dream is definitely worth listening to if you’ve ever been into bands like the Decemberists, or the aforementioned Arcade Fire.  Stream the album in its entirety here. If you’re from outside Portland, catch Bike Thief in a city near you as they’ll embark on a national tour for the month of October, and part of November.

Without further ado, enjoy the world premier of Bike Thief’s brand new video for theer second single off Stuck in a Dream, "Ghosts of Providence."

Ship Captain Crew

Ship Captain Crew released their latest EP "House of Mercury" just over a month ago. The pop band give you numerous packages to purchase on their bandcamp site. My favorite would be the "full band show" package for just $200. Below is the video for the EP’s lead track "Notebook".

For a preview of that package you can catch Ship Captain Crew at Debonair Social Club on October 3rd.

Congratulations to Travis Hayes and Peachelope for Winning The Deli Magazine Artist of the Month Poll

Posted on:

This does not happen often, but this month we have come across and occasion where we must congratulate TWO winners of The Deli Magazine San Francisco Artist of the Month Poll! The votes were so close that it has been decided that Peachelope and Travis Hayes should both be celebrated for obtaining the most votes!

Hayes is a hardworking singer/songwriter and avid supporter of the Bay Area music scene as he works as a promoter and booker for Neck of the Woods, a music venue in inner Richmond area of San Francisco. His smooth mix of indie rock and acoustic jams swoon us to no end.

Peachelope is an experimental avant indie duo whose sultry sounds and innovative live electro-acoustic performances are entrancing and always leaving audiences wanting more. These great local artists are both super deserving of this honor.  We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!

Keep an ear on Mitski: Live at Baby’s All Right on 09.24 – record out in November

Posted on:

In her single ‘Townie’ (streaming) – from upcoming debut LP ‘bury me at makeout creek‘ – Brooklyn based pop/rock muse Mitski sings about parties with no return, and her intention not to fulfill her dad’s dreams. She sounds like an early PJ Harvey with a fuller sound: inspired, careless and full of life. The second track available for streaming – ‘first love/late spring‘ – is instead a ballad that catapults us back to the 60s, and those elegant love songs sung by charming crooners, even though the arrangement here could have been created by The Pixies from the ‘Bossanova’ period. These are noteworthy tunes for such a young artist, and they make us look forward to the album release, scheduled for November. In the meantime, don’t miss Mitski live at Baby’s All Right on September 24.
