Lazer Cake plays The Deli’s CMJ 3 Stage Show at Rockwood on 10.22

Posted on:

There’s no shortage of music with an eighties tinge these days, but that’s not to say there isn’t room for more. In Lazer Cake‘s music, rhythmic synths throb under exultant melodies and chiming beats, resulting in a twitchy nervousness readymade for the indie dancefloor. Earnest vocals from Lazar singer/drummer Robby Sinclair are backed by dynamic washes of synth via Alan Markley, swaying guitars from Tom Deis and Grant Zubritzky’s punchy bass. New romanticism under stress becomes pure expression. You’ll have an opportunity to see Lazer Cake live at The Deli’s official CMJ show at Rockwood Music Hall on October 22nd. – Francesca Baker

Weekend Warrior, September 26 – 28

Philly’s most successful new pop-up park and beer garden, Spruce Street Harbor Park, closes down for the season on Sunday. But before it does, it’s going out with a trippy psych-rock bang this Saturday evening with an electrifying free concert headlined by Bardo Pond. And since they’re hot off the heels of a European tour, the veteran psych rockers are prepared to have an incendiary homecoming. Tonight will be a good opportunity to catch the retro 60’s street-level boogie of Needle Points before their new album Cripple Street comes out next month. If you caught them during this year’s Kensington Picnic, then you know that Spacin’ delivers a carefree, good-times, all-the-time outdoor performance. And this show will be no exception. Weekly Features: Jeremy & the Harlequins premiere video + play Deli’s CBGB Fest show at Pianos on 10.10

Posted on:

If you’re feeling nostalgic for the vintage rock sounds of the ’50s and early ’60s, you can turn to Jeremy & The Harlequins. On October 10 the band will bring their barebones sound — classic, yet reinvigorated with impassioned, heavily delayed vocals –  to Pianos for The Deli’s CBGB’s Fest Rock’n’Roll Revival Show. On the bill also the VeeVees and other vintage sounding groups.

The band is also taking this opportunity to premiere on our blog this uhmmm…. stylish video NYC based performance artist, Lady Alchemy, was inspired to direct, shoot and star for the band’s latest track, "Sunlight in the Rain." Apparently, no male human being was involved in the creation of this video!

Girl Pilot

Posted on:

Sahara Smith is a singer/songwriter who now goes by the name Girl Pilot. T Bone Burnett’s team produced her 2010 debut, Myth of The Heart, so you know this girl is the real deal. Born in 1988 she has the soul you would expect in someone far beyond her young age of 26, but the girlish qualities in her voice bring a youthful energy to the table. Now performing under Girl Pilot, Smith keeps the same vibe but adds a little more indie-pop to her rootsy debut sound. Think Jenny Lewis mixed with Norah Jones. As the name suggests Smith is her own navigator and is ready to take on the Austin music scene, one song at a time. – Allison Mayoral

Maniac announce new album Demimonde, out 10.14

Posted on:

Simplicity can be both a strength and a weakness. Garage rockers Maniac like to venture barely outside the lines with their no frills dirty rock, and their compulsion to urgent hooks and fierce, metronomic drum work simply just works. There’s a dash of power pop sensibility on the track “Dim Sum”, which was featured on their last 7", a brazenly jubilant number with a hard-edged backbone that has singer Zache Davis crying the refrain “shake it out” like proper mod punks. It careens wildly but it’s smartly constructed, a crunchy, straightforward anti-anthem that somehow ends up striking a winning chorus. The band are following it with a new full-length, Demimonde”, which will be released on November 11 via La Ti Da Records.

The Lawsuits EP Release Show w/DRGN KING & Tutlie at JB’s Sept 26

Posted on:

A celebratory atmosphere fills Johnny Brenda’s this evening as a trio of local acts is slated on the bill, headlined by The Lawsuits, whom just released their new EP Tumbled earlier this week. The album builds on the group’s foundation of genre interplay, touching on aspects of folk/Americana, R&B, and rock and creating a polished sound that consistently draws listeners with its tight fluid shifts. Speaking of new records, DRGN King is due to release their latest Baltimore Crush on October 28 via Bar None Records. In the midst of a fall tour, DRGN King unleashes an eclectic upbeat tone, with psych accents and Dominic Angelella’s commanding front-of-the-pack lead vocals. The ever-evolving lineup of chamber/baroque-pop outfit, Tutlie, opens the show, developing a strong hold through delicate yet authoritatively layered vocal harmonies, elevated through a wide range of environment shaping instrumentation, creating a thoughtful sonic setting. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Jeffery Lewis plays Palisades on 10/4 with Shilpa Ray and Palberta

Posted on:

Jefferey Lewis has been recording New York anti-folk heart-bleeders since the 90’s.  He was and is a staple in the anti-folk movement among contemporaries like The Moldy Peaches and Lach to name a few.  His lyrics are incredibly literate and are always an insightful exploration of language and expectations. They mold into long tangents of candidly crafted sentences which unfold into beautiful stories of life and living, no surprise as he’s also a successful comic as well as musician.  On October 4th he will be joined by noir chanteuse, Shilpa Ray (who will be playing our CMJ showcase at Pianos on 10.24) and  balanced out by the experimental-punk trio Palberta.  Be sure not to miss it! -Jake Saunders @The_Colonel63

New Track: “Run The River Dry” – Young Statues

Posted on:
Young Statues have a new track available from their upcoming record The Flatlands Are Your Friends. “Run The River Dry” is driven by the steady, military cadence of its percussion and Carmen Cirignano’s agitated vocals, relaying an air of urgency. The album was recorded by the band in seclusion at a studio in Athens, Georgia with the foursome in the same room playing through the songs. We’re predicting that the group will be sounding tight when they hit the road to support the release.

Show Up Early for Octajohn at The Basement 9.27

Posted on:

Just to throw some more options at you for where to destroy some auditory and/or brain cells this weekend, here’s another: The Basement will have Sol Cat, Future Unlimited and Octajohn on their stage this Saturday, September 27th. While the first two names are common topics around the Nashville dinner table, Octajohn is a little less so. This could be changing in the near future, judging by the bout of activity from the group this summer, which does not seem to be slowing as we hit fall. Their unorthodox instrumentals seem right on for warming a crowd for this particular bill. Songs like "The Landing" are at once cinematic and ambient, and sound like there could be some extraterrestrial DNA in the duo behind the music. Better check them for fingerprints on Saturday night. Show starts at 9pm, and cover is $7. -Terra James-Jura

Can’t make it out this Saturday? No worries, Octajohn also has a show on Monday, September 29th at the East Room!

Portland

Album Review: Jackson Boone’s Starlit

Posted on:

Sometimes we are offered glimpses into what Portland, Oregon used to be. These fleeting moments are often brought back through people born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Jackson Boone fits all of the above and is ready to share his perception via his newest album, Starlit

Boone’s debut full-length is very much like a wave: a rise and fall of climatic melodies with just the right amount of steadiness. Produced by Riley Geare of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and help from fellow local musicians in the recording process, the amount of passion and camaraderie stands out as one to remember. "Heavy Lovers" elicits the appropriate atmosphere for its title. It’s slow, slightly brooding and the subtle wail of the guitar makes it undeniably sexy. Boone’s vocals sound taunting and venturesome, never desperate. This trait carries throughout the album. Moments in between the calm, Boone shifts to jarring noises before gracefully transitioning back in "Haystack Rock N’ Roll". It concludes with the chunky, but incredibly catchy "Luv Bug".

Trust our decision making and head out this Saturday night. Boone starts a series of live performances this month with Alberta St. Pub’s charming and quaint performance space. Psych-phenomenons Tender Age and Cambrian Explosion will be supporting.
