Bardo Pond Luring You Into Places Unknown at KFN Aug. 6

Posted on:

Sometimes, drifting is the best move. Bardo Pond is a band whose musical structure dictates and in fact, may suggest drifting as a policy; gradually picking up the threshold and inching it further from the starting point. In the process, stirring a wicked brew of cutting, dungeon-painting guitar countered by enchanting vocals, they’ll lure you into places unknown. Bardo Pond will be prefaced tonight at Kung Fu Necktie by the heavy-psych vibes of Gondola, hard-rocking trio The Company Corvette, and the searing rock ‘n’ roll guitar riffs of Carousel. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., $8, 8pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Pree release new single “Two Feet Shy.”

Posted on:

Pree’s new single, "Two Feet Shy," is their best yet. The lead single off their new record, Rima (Paper Garden Records), "Two Feet Shy" is a delightful and bright jumble of nerves and hope. The off-kilter arrangements of chiming guitars and ringing keys swirl around May Tabol’s sweet warbling jazzy vocals. A thick kick-drum in the opening section beats like the heart of a nervous lover, creating as much anticipation in the listener as the narrator. It’s a moving song, with glistening tones and splashes of color, perfect for a walk with headphones on through the cool breezes and dancing leaves of the approaching autumn. Rima is set to drop in February of 2015. For now, we eagerly look forward o more singles and you can catch Pree on tour across the country. –Natan Press

Weekend Warrior, September 5 – 7

Posted on:
With the release of their forthcoming album, Pretty Music for Pretty People, happening in early October, autumn is going to be the season of The Dead Milkmen. Alas, the band will be touring the western part of the United States during the bulk of fall, giving Philly little opportunity to see them. But before they go, the beloved satirical punk band has lined up a fitting venue for a sendoff celebration – Laurel Hill Cemetery. Join the veteran rock outfit as they entertain the living and the dead with the classics that you know all the words to, and preview some new material from next month’s release. However, be sure to arrive early to do a tour of the historic cemetery, and catch the opening performance from cyber art rockers S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave., 7pm, $15, All Ages – Bill McThrill

NYC Band on the Rise: Told Slant

Posted on:

Told Slant is the musical project of Brooklyn-based Felix Walworth currently featuring Oliver Kalb, Gabrielle Smith and Emily Sprague. After unceremoniously dropping their 10 song LP ‘Still Water’ on bandcamp two years ago in August 2012 (and garnering very little response as a result) the ‘bedroom punk’ band officially re-released the album earlier this year with Broken World Media and embarked on an almost-national tour with NY pop band Crying. A sorrowfully beautiful collection of songs, the album trickles along quietly at a slow pace allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the intensity of Walworth’s dark and searching lyrics. Each song reads like a carefully crafted essay, honestly and artfully exploring relationships (and their dissolution), love, depression, confusion and the human condition. Listen to the full album here or even better purchase it on 12" vinyl via Broken World Media. – Brescia Mascheretti

Habibi plays The Wick on 09.12 + tours with Shonen Knife

Posted on:

Habibi might be the only Brooklyn band with Algeri (Algeria) as their most engaged city in their Facebook profile that actually doesn’t pump up their numbers through hacking (by the way, bands who do that should stop now!). Yes, because the all female quartet not only features among its ranks Rahill Jamalifard (who has a Persian background), but also chose as a name the Arabic word for "my beloved," and claims middle Eastern influences in their sound. But even though the latter claim rings true, 60s bubblegum pop and garage elements are way more noticeable, at least in their 2013 debut, self-titled album on Burger Records. Check out single ‘I Got The Moves’ below, and see them live at the Wick on 09.12 – the second date of their east coast tour with Shonen Knife.

It was filmed at Berks Warhouse, and was directed by C.T. Slothrust tours with Cymbals Eat Guitars + opens for The Kills at Bowery on 10.23

Posted on:

At the 2014 edition of the CMJ Music Marathon, Brooklyn’s Slothrust will be one of the NYC bands to keep an ear on (or two). Offering a very personal reinterpretation of the loud/quiet/loud sound of the rock of the 90s (but sparing us from the raspy vocals revival), their 2013 album ‘Of Course You Do’ has been a little bit of a sleeper, but allowed the band to keep gaining momentum and conquering fans with each live appearance. They just announced they are scheduled to tour with Cymbal Eats Guitars in the fall and to open for The Kills at the Bowery Ballroom on CMJ Thursday (10.23).

Songs by Slothrust are included in The Deli’s playlist of Best slacker rock/garage songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Field Division Release Single “Faultlines”

Posted on:

Field Division released this single, "Faultlines" on September 2nd, in anticipation of the October 28th release of their debut EP "Reverie State." The track it spectral and gorgeous, and all but grabs a listener’s hand and pulls them through the misty soundscape they’ve built from piano whisps and shuffling, distant drums. The Des Moines natives Evelyn Taylor and Nicholas Frampton have settled here in Nashville, where they’ve been working with Night Beds and Kopecky Family Band producers Konrad Snyder and Benjamin Kaufman.  They’ve dubbed their richly layered sound "folkwave," so this EP is going to be setting the precedent for the many that will be following in their footsteps. -Terra James-Jura

Whiskey Shivers releases third LP

Posted on:

On September 23rd, Austin’s edgy bluegrass quintet Whiskey Shivers will release their third full-length album, a self-titled collection which you can now preorder on iTunes to receive a download of their latest single ‘Free.’ Aiming to “knock the dust off roots music,” the five bandmates came together in 2009 to give some passion and grit to the rockabilly sounds of their predecessors. Their boundless energy and obvious camaraderie has allowed them to carve out their own space in the local live scene, becoming regulars at venues like Antone’s. The band is currently touring the US in support of the album, so keep an eye out for a local show and be sure to catch the forthcoming release. – Jillian Dooley
