New Literature LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

We certainly had Arab Spring, Literature‘s debut full-length album, on heavy rotation when we first discovered that they had moved from Austin to Philly; so much so, that we, soon after, booked them for one of our Tuesday Tune-Out showcases and last year’s big Deli Philly 5th anniversary bash. It’s taken a moment to get another LP from the group, but it was good to learn that they’ll be releasing their new record, Chorus, on August 19 via Slumberland Records, a fitting home for the quartet, which now consists of Kevin Attics, Nathaniel Cardaci, Seth Whaland, and Chris Schackerman. And you can currently stream Literature’s album in its entirety over at Hype Machine.

The Autonomics Release ‘Keep Tulsa Ugly’ 8.5 at Bunk Bar

Posted on:

Welp, better go give your money to the Autonomics. The Portland trio puts out it’s newest EP Keep Tulsa Ugly tuesday, 8.5.14. The self-release is a fuzzy, grunge-pop snapshot of the band’s tour-tight sound. Recorded in less than two days, the songs are crunchy, raw, and full of energy–a perfect representation of their gnarly (in a good way) live set. All five songs smash through your ears in just under 13 minutes. The track “I love you, Oprah Winfrey” will have you humming and la-la..ing along in no time. Shit is catchy.

Check out the new songs and see The Autonomics at Bunk Bar with Psychomagic and Mufassa tonight. Show starts at 9pm. $5 gets you in, and a free download card for the EP.

Daniella Mason, “Shade of You”

Posted on:

Anyone who doesn’t get caught up a little in the bombacity of hyper-produced, aggressively emotional pop love anthems have probably had one too many dreams crushed in the slow unravel of their existence.  The rest of us whose lives cannot be compared to a tattered sweater flapping on a tree branch until it disintegrates will find something to to enjoy in Daniella Mason’s single "Shade of You." So many elements of this track scream Top 40, but something in the delivery makes it go down as a well-made dream pop gem rather than spiritless club remix fodder.  The lyrics are essentially the inverse of a love song, and the line that hooked me is also the most satirical of the track: Everyone loves you, so I do too/ I need what they want, and I guess that’s you.  She’s drawn comparisons to Ellie Goulding and Jessie Ware.  -Terra James-Jura

Sun Valley Gun Club Releases New Single – Hey Collapser

Posted on:

First, let’s get this out of the way: Congratulations to Sun Valley Gun Club for winning The Deli Magazine San Francisco Artist of the Month Poll! Every month, a band comes out on top and this month is no different. This band won the poll by a landslide and we’d like to thank all the readers for voting! We hope you continue to support hard working bands like Sun Valley Gun Club. Congrats guys!!

Sun Valley Gun Club has released an awesome new single called Hey Collapser. This track is a grungy indie rock song that sounds like a nice mix between The Shins and a California drenched Modest Mouse.  Hey Collapser has well placed driving guitar riffs, milky vocals and a tightly composed style. Not all songs can create clean pauses and ebbs and flows that dramatically build and fall while still keeping its underground rock and roll integrity, but Hey Collapser does this. Very cool. This track proves you can be an underground band and still have great production value and a coherent sound. –je

From The Deli Submissions: Blynd Birds

Posted on:

Blynd Birds has recorded a mixed set of tracks that will hits in more than one spot. The diversity of genres in their 4-track release is perfect for the restless listener. It’s all there; styles including blues, indie, folk, garage, and punk rock. On their bandcamp, they ask that listeners "excuse the quality," but I think the lo-fi fuzz only adds to their edge. The Bottom Dollars start residency at Brooklyn Bowl on 08.05

Posted on:

This upcoming Tuesday, August 5th, self-proclaimed “rock ’n’ soul” band The Bottom Dollars will begin their month-long residency at Brooklyn Bowl. Comprised of five charismatic (and very hard working) young men, the group has been building a growing fan base since the release of their debut EP “The Halcyon Days” back in 2011. This year, the band is back with ‘Meet Me in Cognito,’ a sophisticated collection of rock songs threaded with bits of blues, folk, and the occasional country twang. With their latest release, the boys have proven themselves to be technically sound musicians, offering guitar riffs, instrumental interludes, and vocal layering characteristic of seasoned rockers. They know how to properly translate it all on stage – a quite rare talent. Be sure to catch them on August 5th, 12th, and 19th, alongside special guests the likes of Aabaraki and The Teen Age. – Jillian Dooley

New Video: “Blue Moon” (Live) – The Extraordinaires

Posted on:

The Extraordinaires already shared a charming music video for their track "Blue Moon," off the band’s latest LP Dress for Nasty Weather. And while on tour in Charlottesville, VA, they stopped in at Blue Moon Diner for a lovely live serenade with Garage Video Sessions before feasting on a tasty-looking breakfast. Here is a good argument for why you should allow your children to play with their utensils. Enjoy!

NYC band on the rise: Jack and Eliza play Glasslands on 08.23

Posted on:

NYC natives Jack and Eliza premiered the single "Secrets" this week in preparation for their EP ‘No Wonders,’ to be released next Fall. Like their popular debut single "Hold The Line," "Secrets" (streaming below) is riveting and minimalistic: simple electric guitar chords are the only background to the duo’s celestial vocal harmonies and riveting lyrics. The timing of their single release could not be more on point, as "Secrets" fits seamlessly into the lazy heat of summer and drawn-out nostalgia. These New York natives, and childhood friends, have paired to create a surge of positive energy as a new band. With over 60,000 listens on Soundcloud in just a month, it seems New York City and beyond waits in anticipation, and wonder, for their EP. You can see them live on 8/23 at Glasslands with Ski Lodge. – Sammie Spector

Congratulations to The Whippoorwills, Our New Artist of the Month!

Posted on:

Wowee!!  Had we known that this last poll was going to be so tooth and nail, we’d have called animal control!  It became apparent early on that this was a fight between post-punk outfit The Whippoorwills and inexplicable surf rockers Sexx (the Deli Nashville will never fully comprehend this phenomenon in Nashville.  We dig it for sure, but as Black Francis once said, "Yo soy playero pero no hay playa, bien perdida la surfer Rosa. Oh my golly!") In the end, and just by the slightest margin, The Whipoorwills won out.  A shade over a year old, the trio delivers some meaty jams with the rancor of a freshly-flunked-from-art-school Karen O.  Vocalist Heather Gray screams, croons, murmurs and squeals, and her antics round out the spartan drum and guitar supporting her.  They also have the wherewithal to rustle up enough votes for our poll while out on the road, no less, proving themselves as industrious as they are well-dressed.  The Whippoorwills released their self-titled debut album this past June via Mattress House Music; check out their latest video for "Tattooed Smile."  -Terra James-Jura
