Modern Vices

Posted on:

Modern Vices is lead by the energetic and compelling voice of Alex Rebek. Their self-titled debut album will be released by Autumn Tone (home to like-minded Twin Peaks and The Orwells) on October 7th. They recently released their first single "Cheap Style". Their sound strikes a charming balance between garage pop, late ’50s croon, The Smiths, and The Drum. High praise, sure, but Modern Vices is already proving they can deliver.

You can catch Modern Vices at Subt on August 3rd with Zoo Brother, Twin Cabins, and Sister Savage and at The Burlington on August 15th with Heavy Times and Dead Gaze.

Noisy NYC band on the rise: ADVAETA – live at Silent Barn tomorrow (07.29)

Posted on:

Noise-rock trio ADVAETA utilizes a static-ridden ambience to create otherworldly sonic soundscapes.  On "Gold Thought Exit" (streaming) we are acquainted with Amanda Salane’s voice, a presence as strong as the expansive atmosphere that surrounds them.  Her vocals are in part reminiscent of Andrya Ambro of Talk Normal (a band we featured on the cover of the 22nd issue of The Deli back in 2010); both feature an attitude that seems to add extra layers of meaning to what is happening lyrically or sonically.  The band’s energy is remarkably original and daring, and among the wash of reverb and distortion, complexities are revealed through dissonant melodies and creative structures. You can see ADVAETA live tomorrow (07.29) at The Silent Barn. – Jake Saunders

A NYC country girl: Michaela Anne plays Union Pool on 07.30 + hits the road

Posted on:

Michaela Anne’s ‘Ease My Mind’ is the sweet, heavy-hearted story of a young country singer recently disillusioned by the trials and tribulations of love, her family, and her city. Michaela croons these disappointments with a sadness readily combatted by grace and power, offering all of the simplicity of a true country album with the complexity of being young in a big city. Brooklyn’s country gem laments, “Is this what Mama meant when she told me how hard it can get?” with a syrupy, unmasked voice, recalling perfectly the blissful ignorance of childhood in a single line. Now, Michaela is spreading the nostalgia as she hits the road in support of the album— be sure to catch her at Brooklyn’s Union Pool on July 30th. – Jillian Dooley

New Music Video: “Crickets” – Shorty boy-boy

Posted on:

Multi-instrumentalist Josh Pannepacker has been lending out his drumming skills over the last few years to notable acts like Streetwalkers, Sun Airway, and now Cheerleader. We first encountered Pannepacker as mastermind and frontman for Shorty boy-boy. Well, he has a new/old music video (which was actually shot two years ago) that he wanted to share for his track, "Crickets," which you can check out below. The psyched-out footage was edited and shot by Jon Applebaum, with help from Kevin Howley. (Photo by Grace Dickinson)

The Woolen Men + Cool Ghouls + Dogheart at Mississippi 7.29

Posted on:

Whenever you see The Woolen Men appear on a bill you can count on it being a killer show. Not just because of their own aptitude for producing first-rate garage slacker-pop jams, but also because they keep very good company. July 29 at Mississippi Studios the guys are hanging out with Dogheart and San Francisco based Cool Ghouls for a night of bouncy garage rock and crunchy guitars. Dogheart is a new band on the scene who runs with knockabout bands like The Shivas and Mister Tang, but takes a more polished and subdued approach to the Portland-garage sound. Cool Ghouls will fill in the rough-and-tumble role that Dogheart will be familiar with; their brand of R&B infused swinging rock and roll is reminiscent of early Strange Boys with a twist of psych rock texture. This lineup will get you so jiggy Will Smith would offer you a solemn nod of approval.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow w/Pattern is Movement & Myrrias at JB’s July 27

Posted on:

A Sunny Day in Glasgow released their first album in four years, the Jeff Zeigler-produced Sea Went Absent, earlier this week via Lefse Records, and this evening, they’ll headline a triad of local artists that know how to push the envelope. The six-piece develops an ethereal state of affairs, capturing soft siren-esque vocals combined with floating layers of instrumentation, pieces of keys/synth, strings percussion, guitar etc., fitting them together to form a beautiful musical portrait that somehow slightly drifts out there yet, for the most part, remains within reach. On a similar note, the experimental-pop pairing of Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward, a.k.a. Pattern is Movement, delivers its intricately groovy, multi-instrumental R&B, fusing a variety of musical textures while the end product appears seamless. Myrrias a newly formed quartet, which includes Mikele Edwards (Arc in Round), Amy Harkanson (Downtown Club), Casey Bell (Break It Up), and Emily Robb (Lantern), opens the show weaving together vocals with a darker edge, industrial instrumental tone.
