Bearcubbin, Yeah Great Fine and Gallons at Holocene 7.6

Posted on:

Come out to Holocene Sunday night (7/6) for an evening of local math-rock heroics as Bearcubbin, Yeah Great Fine AND Gallons will play in what is sure to be the highest of energy gatherings.

If there was a common thread weaving throughout the night’s acts, it would certainly be rhythmic density. All three acts bring a degree of complexity to their beats and metrics that dares you to clap and count along. With bands like these, your only hope is to simply throw yourself at the music and let it’s currents and tides direct you as they see fit. From Yeah Great Fine’s bright and joyous popisms to Bearcubbin’s active, instrumental, loop-rock to Gallons’ thick, post-hardcore, dance-punk, each band exudes i ts own distinct vibe to continually snag your attention. Get ready for an earful of abandon.

Madalean Gauze Opening for Shark Tape at JB’s July 5

Posted on:
American War, the debut EP from Madalean Gauze, establishes and reinforces something that’s a key component: energy. The music has that steadfast movement that transfers over with each listen. Now, with that being said, it’s a record that often finds an indie rock-folk core with Gauze’s confidently smooth vocals and instrumentation leisurely sitting back or effectively pushing the pace, changing the tone and intensity level, while sometimes exploring various modes within a given song. Madalean Gauze is penciled as the direct support for tonight’s lineup at Johnny Brenda’s, which will be opened by South Jersey family-affair female pop quartet Ortolan with the pop-rock of Shark Tape serving as the main attraction for the evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Happy Birthday USA (& Mitch)! at PhilaMOCA July 5

Posted on:
Celebrate freedom for one more day as PhilaMOCA hosts an all-day barbecue in honor of the birthday and engagement of Mitch Esparza (The Love Club). It wouldn’t be a PhilaMOCA party without an eclectic lineup of music, and it will be a good time to catch Mumblr before they play the upcoming Redbull Sound Select Series with Spank Rock and Prowler. And they’ll likely be playing songs from their upcoming album Full of Snakes, including “Sober,” which they recently shared a video for (below). Some members of The Love Club will be doing double duty when they play in the relatively new project Humanshapes that also features members of Great Red Spots and Gypsy Death and You. But The Love Club will also be playing fast-paced, bluesy indie-punk songs from their latest release Pearls Dissolve in Vinegar. Filling out the celebration will be Dead Tenors, Jesus Christ Goddamnit, Impressionist, and Faceporn. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 3:30PM, $5 – $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

NYC bands to check out: Sun Looks Down plays Mercury on 07.05

Posted on:

Sun Looks Down, a band made up of recent Columbia grads Diana Flanagan, Spencer Horstman, Jacob Sunshine, and David Su, writes songs both incandescent and swoon-worthy. The tracks on “Sungaze,” the band’s latest EP (and an appropriate genre name for the band), are hazy, feverish, and entirely unafraid of dissonance or experimentation. Take, for example “Wash Out the Red” (streaming). The song begins sparsly, built upon Horstman’s subtle keyboard arrangement and Flanagan’s ethereal vocal passages, while a transcendent distorted guitar, shimmering and racing light years ahead, cuts through the softness like a bloody knife, gradually taking the track to a louder place. “Sungaze” is all the more impressive for being the band’s debut. The EP captures a sense of tense balance and dynamic awareness of a band at their prime. Make sure to catch Sun Looks Down and The Graveyard Kids at The Mercury Lounge on July 5. – Emilio Herce

4th of July with Old Light, XDS, Bearcubbin’! and Talkative

Posted on:

Exercise your right to party this Freedom Day at a block-wide festival thrown outside Bunk Bar (SE Taylor and Water ave). Along with all the necessary 4th of July features, i.e. fireworks, beer, barbecuing, flag-waving, and general revelry, there will also be live music from Old Light, XDS, Bearcubbin’!, and Talkative. Yes, there will be services to excite all five senses this Stars and Stripes Day, and chillin out to Old Light’s dreamy psych pop may just inspire a sixth if you know what I mean. They’re headlining the show, and if you haven’t heard these guys yet, get with the program; it’s like having our very own Portland garage infused Wooden Shjips.

Starting off at 5pm sharp is Talkative, the first indie space punk band to be fully endorsed by Thomas Jefferson himself. Their quintessentially American unapologetic, devil-may-care style is the perfect preamble to a night of nationalistic pride. Up next, test your understanding of music theory with Bearcubbin’s jazzy, arcane, math rock. Then XDS starts the cerebral fireworks show with their kooky brand of world psych pop. With just enough of a hook to grasp onto, their music takes you on a journey through a vortex of texture, syncopation, and effects. Old Light will close out the block party with a punctuational cannon blast, before your inebreated meanderings take your night in a new direction (go to PALS Clubhouse immediately after for a killer secret house show!).

United Ghosts play The Bootleg on July 16

Posted on:

United Ghosts is a band who likes to insert momentum into their music. "Out of Love", the first track off their upcoming EP, Dear Electric Sun, begins with a bass line reminiscent of a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel; a ceaseless anthem of shoegazey pop, the song doesn’t really let up, and that’s a good thing. United Ghosts displays a powerful array of influences ranging from the power pop of Arctic Monkeys to the high-reverb landscapes pioneered by My Bloody Valentine, complete with static ridden melodies and spacey electronics. Every song on the EP is an anthemic wall of sound, where the dynamics rarely shift out of the higher gears. You can catch United Ghosts on July 16th at Bootleg Theater. – Jake Saunders
